Treat cannabis legalization as work in progress, conference told
via vancouversun.comThe public can’t let governments rest once recreational cannabis is legalized, according to an academic expert who has been advising the province on the process.
Legalization is happening on such a short schedule that people can’t assume that governments will have things right at the outset, said Gerald Thomas, a University of Victoria scientist who specializes in substance use.
“What I would invite you to invite government to do is set up a really systematic process to go back -
West Coast Express locomotives due for multimillion-dollar overhauls

TransLink contracted SNC-Lavalin, at a cost of $78,000, to conduct a mechanical and electrical assessment of its fleet of six locomotives in February, to prepare for planned repair work. Postmedia obtained a copy of the inspection report through a freedom of information request.

Letters, Sept. 29: Lowering cap on rent increases will cut housing supply
via vancouversun.comThe B.C. Rental Housing Task Force has jumped on the rental housing market ignorance bandwagon with its recommendation to cut the annual rent increase cap. Between onerous lease rules favouring tenants and minimal rental increase caps that ignore local market conditions, our provincial governments have progressively made building rental housing in high demand markets in B.C. a spectacularly unattractive investment opportunity.
Surprise, surprise, this has generated a massive shortfall in rental -
Big buzz ‘accidentally’ builds around Finding Big Country documentary
via theprovince.comThe irony isn’t lost on Kat Jayme.
A picture of a prop for her film, a documentary about a player a city has mostly forgotten, was one of the most viral social media trends in the local Twittersphere this summer.
And best thing is, the prop — a bunch of fake missing person photos plastered to a wall in Mount Pleasant — weren’t even a clever marketing ploy.
“That was an accident — a complete accident,” said Jayme, who’s spent the past three yea -
Genesa Greening: It's chilling that the fight for women's reproductive rights isn't over
via vancouversun.comI exhaled mightily when the Conservatives pledged not to re-open the federal abortion debate. I suspect many Canadian women did.
However, this relief has no permanency. It’s an uneasy reprieve that has since given way to a bone-chilling concern that I can’t shake.
That an abortion debate was even being considered should infuriate the 77 per cent of Canadians who believe in a woman’s right to choose. Today, I find myself wondering when the next threat to women will come an -
Editorial: Surrey LRT project needs to proceed
via vancouversun.comThe emergence of Surrey’s already green-lit LRT project as a top issue in that city’s municipal election campaign is a bit of a head scratcher.
Former mayor Doug McCallum, seeking to win back the job he lost in 2005 as the Safe Surrey Coalition mayoral candidate, has vowed to kill the $1.65-billion, 10.5-kilometre, at-grade, light-rail transit line that would link the Surrey town centres of Guildford and Newton to the City Centre.
But only four years ago, McCallum supported -
Bob Plecas: Badly flawed electoral reform process is too controlled by politicians
via vancouversun.comPremier John Horgan’s comments about this fall’s referendum on electoral reform at the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities annual convention are disturbing for three reasons.
He said: “I’m going to campaign as hard as I can in the next month to convince other British Columbians to join with me and take a leap of faith on a change that works in jurisdictions around the world. Do not be put in a place of fear.”
Obviously, the premier’s briefing notes were wrong. -

Whitecaps, L.A. in different spending galaxies, but have same results
via theprovince.comTwo rudderless ships will drift into each other about 10 kilometres inland from Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday night.
Both have a destination — a Major League Soccer championship — but their routes are going through different poles with the same lacklustre results.
The budget-conscious Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday fired Carl Robinson, their head coach of nearly five seasons. The L.A. Galaxy, the high-profile, high-paying league standard-bearers, parted ways with Sigi Schmid two we -
