Mike Smyth: Weaver argues it’s time to ban foreign real-estate buyers
via theprovince.comWhen Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver ramped up his calls for a foreign-buyers ban in B.C. real estate, he was met with a quick rebuff from Premier John Horgan.
“I’m a child of an immigrant,” Horgan said, pointing to his Irish roots.
“B.C. is the gateway to Canada and I don’t believe we should be curbing people from coming here.”
For Weaver, the response was infuriating.
“We’re not talking about immigrants or refugees,” Weaver told me. & -

Makeover: Thick, natural waves tamed with cut and colour
via vancouversun.comDeena Lanchester, 47, works as a publicist and was overdue for a colour and cut. She has very thick textured and naturally wavy hair. It was previously coloured and needed to be reshaped. She also finds that her colour looks brassy and her hair feels dry.
I started by applying weave foil highlights through her hair to brighten up around her face. For depth, I applied for a cool brown background foundation colour in a permanent formula to blend out her regrowth area. -

REAL SCOOP: Murders stem from Wolf Pack internal conflict
via vancouversun.comI was working on this weekend story for a few days after learning from sources that Matthew Navas-Rivas was the target of the shooting last January that left a Coquitlam teenager caught in the crossfire dead.
Naval-Rivas knew he was targeted after he and others once part of the Wolf Pack started feuding with others in the gang alliance. At the time of his murder last month, Navas-Rivas, who was on bail on dozens of firearms charges, was with the Brothers Keepers and had been on their annual boat -

The 30-year-old, who goes by the artist name ARCY, then snaps a photo of the finished work and sends it home to his sons Sean, 6, and Connor, 4

The far side of Iceland
via theprovince.comIt’s pushing midnight, but still a glimmer of gold lingers on the horizon, framed by the plunging walls of the fjord. Overlaid by a few wisps of pink signalling the end of a long, sunny day, and perhaps promising another tomorrow, the MS Panorama skims out of Patreksfjörđur on calm seas, cruising at a nice clip into the Denmark Strait.

Larry Green: Panic attacks, antidepressants and postmodernism
via vancouversun.comWhat is at stake in a panic attack? Loss of one’s mind; loss of self; loss of one’s soul. It doesn’t really matter what we name it — mind, self or soul — the loss that is feared is the most profound possible.
Experientially the sufferer feels like they are losing their anchorage or going to pieces. If he or she manages to shut down this massive explosion of nervous energy, then they find themselves depressed — no longer the person they took themselves to be.

Aboriginal culture shines on Vancouver Island’s West coast
via theprovince.comA rich variety of indigenous culture and history on the west coast of Vancouver Island awaits, courtesy of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations, who had first contact with Europeans in the late 18th century.
Wisqii (wish-key) leads us through old-growth rainforest to a secluded beach at the entrance to Barkley Sound on Vancouver Island. And while it looks untouched by human hands, this was once the capital of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation near Bamfield. It’s called Kiixin (kee-hin) and now -

The Home Front: Dorm room design that lives longer than your time on campus
via vancouversun.comDecorating a dorm room to feel like a home away from home rather than an sterile grey box requires an approach that’s the same as when you’re decking out your first studio or apartment, says Bed Bath & Beyond’s Canadian university coordinator Joann Vellara.
“This is essentially small-space living,” Vellara says, “so solutions that help them maximize their space, like slim-line hangers or under-the-bed storage or over-the-door storage, are essentials, -

Gang murders linked to internal disputes, conflicts in prison
via vancouversun.comThe night before Matthew Navas-Rivas was shot to death in east Vancouver last month, he was enjoying himself with other members of the Brothers Keepers gang on a boat cruise around the Vancouver waterfront.
Postmedia has obtained photos of the cruise, where Navas-Rivas chatted up other gang members and guests, shirt off, tattoos visible.

It doesn’t overdramatize the point to call this a must-win for the Lions. They’re already a game back of the Green Machine for fourth place in the CFL West and what figures to be the crossover berth for the playoffs.
A loss at home would cripple the Lions’ chances at a post-season berth. The good news is the Lions have three -
