Metro Vancouver's best burger: And the winner is …
via vancouversun.comIt’s a universal fact that most people love burgers. But Metro Vancouverites, well, it turns out we’re downright passionate about them.
When we asked our readers to tell us where to find the best burger in and around the city, we were overwhelmed with responses.
Some people pointed to Hawksworth, while others cast votes for Monarch Burger on Main. But it was Uli’s beside the beach in White Rock that was the runaway winner. By a long shot.

Vancouver Weather: Heat warning lifted, but air advisory in effect
via vancouversun.comVANCOUVER, B.C. – Environment Canada has lifted the heat warning, as temperatures cooled down Saturday. However, a poor air quality advisory is in effect for Metro Vancouver because of the smoky skies from a barge fire in Surrey on Friday and from several wildfires.

Douglas Todd: B.C. economist in grim battle against deceptive scholarship
via vancouversun.comWe’ve all heard about fake news. Now we have deceptive scholarship.
A determined B.C. economics professor has journeyed into the heart of a dark world where academics seeking to advance their careers have had hundreds of thousands of their articles published for a fee in journals that either deserve suspicion or are outright phoney.
In academia, where the admonition to “publish or perish” is not an empty threat, it is often difficult for scholars to have their research publishe -
This Week in History: 1931: Vancouver becomes Canada's third-largest city
via vancouversun.comCivic boosters often predicted Vancouver would become western Canada’s biggest city after it was incorporated in 1886. But it took awhile for the population to catch up to the hype.
It finally happened on Aug. 13, 1931, when Vancouver passed Winnipeg to become the third-largest city in Canada.
According to that year’s federal census, Vancouver’s population was 245,307, while Winnipeg’s was 217,687.
In the 1921 census, Vancouver’s population was 163,220, which meant -

“I went to the (former) Marigold Nursery to buy some African daisies for my wife,” says Hackett, “and I came back with the daisies and the (eight-acre) nursery.”
While there, he fell into a conversation with Ray Smith, the nursery’s owner, who had supplied plants to Hackett’s previous hous -
Goretti Guibault and Brian Cochrane: Community Benefits Agreements needed to fix 16 years of mishandling apprenticeships and training
via vancouversun.comMuch has been written recently about whether British Columbia’s new Community Benefits Agreements process for major public construction projects are a good thing.
But what hasn’t been much discussed is why. Community Benefits Agreements are needed. It’s pretty simple: Because apprenticeship training was mishandled for 16 years in B.C. and the number of skilled workers being trained dramatically deteriorated.
The facts prove it.
