U.S. and Canadian experts weigh options to save ailing orca
via vancouversun.comSEATTLE — U.S. federal biologists are weighing a range of emergency options to save an emaciated endangered orca including possibly feeding it live salmon at sea dosed with medication.
Whale researchers are worried about the survival of the four-year-old female orca known as J50, a member of the dwindling population of southern resident killer whales that spends summer months in the inland waters of Washington and British Columbia.

Johnny Manziel continued to move the needle on CFL fan and media interest — on both sides of the border — especially after being named to start Friday in Montreal as the Alouettes hosted his former team, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
The game should not only generate the largest audience of the season on TSN and RDS, but on ESPN it should be right up there among the most-watched, non-Grey Cup games in the history of American TV.

The future of food is now: Insects, lab-grown meat and biotech farming
via vancouversun.comA diet of meal worms and crickets doesn’t sound a whole lot more appetizing than Charlton Heston’s cannibal snacks in the sci-fi classic Soylent Green.
But by the time Heston’s character declares the obvious — “Soylent Green is people!” — no one seemed to care any more. Proof you can get used to just about anything.

Letters: Plastic straw ban is nothing more than optics
via vancouversun.comRe: Canadian companies push paper, glass as plastic alternatives, July 16.
The City of Vancouver ban on plastic straws is hypocritical. Only an extremely small portion of plastic entering the environment will be affected, so I suppose it has been adopted in order to make people feel better — rather like a placebo. If the city really wants to do something meaningful they should ban all plastic bags, but I guess too many people would object and it’s an election year. Also, consideratio -
