Stephen Wiseman: How the NDP’s school tax hurts us all
via vancouversun.comMuch has been said lately about the NDP’s proposed additional school tax — the measure that will immediately require B.C. homeowners whose annual assessment notices exceed $3 million to pay far more in property tax.
This proposal is highly distressing to many, as it will result in local families literally taxed out of their homes. An assessment notice doesn’t mean you have $3 million in the bank, or in fact anything in the bank. It does not mean you can now afford to buy the ho -
Letters: Trudeau has not shown leadership on the Trans Mountain expansion controversy
via vancouversun.comRe: Rachel Notley: The Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion must be built, Opinion, May 22
As far as I’m concerned, our prime minister, Justin Trudeau, and the federal liberals have been totally irresponsible for not resolving the Kinder Morgan fiasco sooner. It is apparent that he is fearing ballot box retribution if he were to force it through, and is now hoping that someone else will have to make the decision. It could be a back-down by the B.C. Victoria was ahead of the pack with its progressive measures to limit public smoking; it can -

His graphic descriptions of treatments for late-stage prostate cancer my have caused some readers to cringe but they made a compelling case for early detection. Cancers discovered at an early stage are usually easier to treat, halting their advance and thereby avoiding -
Andrew Petter: The new community builders: universities, colleges and institutes are vital source of social infrastructure
via vancouversun.comIn a world of globalized commerce and communications, but localized problems, where can we turn for the relationships and social structures that our communities need to thrive?
Communities were once bolstered by dominant domestic industries, anchor institutions that sewed strength into the fabric of society even as they sustained local economies. But globalization has displaced many such industries at the same time that civic networks have been disrupted and governments’ fiscal capacities
