Horse-drawn carriages have no place in an urban environment such as downtown Victoria and should be phased out, says Coun. Ben Isitt.
“I don’t think horse-drawn carriage operations are an appropriate use of animals for commercial purposes — essentially for entertainment,” Isitt said, while discussing bylaw amendments that would require operators to clearly identify horses and operators.
Isitt said the changes just “scratch the surface” in terms of what&rs

Horses belong on farms, not pulling carriages in Victoria: City Councillor says
via vancouversun.com -
Why is so much parking clearance needed around hydrants? It’s not
via vancouversun.comMetro Vancouver’s engineers and fire chiefs are offering a partial solution to the parking shortage that’s particularly affecting Surrey and Coquitlam, where increased densification in some neighbourhoods means not enough room for all the extra cars.
They say the answer to creating several hundred additional on-street parking spots is hiding in plain sight: By cutting the no-parking clearance around hydrants in half, there would be room for more cars on streets.
The city engineers, t -

Rebels youngster Vujisic comes with an old soul
via theprovince.comProbably a small handful of the 4,000 or so at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday night could tell you about George Mikan, and one of them just happened to be the Burnaby South Rebels’ towering Grade 10 centre.
“I watch a ton of old-school tape, all the way back to George Mikan, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar,” the 6-foot-9 Sasha Vujisic said after helping the No. 8-seeded Rebels beat the No. 6 Semiahmoo Totems 80-72 for the quad-A boys basketball provin -

Ben Kuzma: Demko’s looming shadow grows amid ongoing crease concerns
via theprovince.comGLENDALE, Ariz. — Thatcher Demko isn’t here. It just seems like he is. Not physically, but certainly in the consciousness of the Canucks.
The latest goaltender of the future for the NHL club is becoming a front-burner fascination because of what hasn’t happened in the crease — neither Jacob Markstrom nor Anders Nilsson looking like a bonafide, no-doubt starter — and another slow slog toward an off-season of franchise navel-gazing.
It’s why recalling Demko from -

Outside-of-B.C. owners push back against proposed speculation tax
via vancouversun.comCindy Meston was born and grew up in Abbotsford and Vancouver, and bought her downtown Vancouver condo 19 years ago.
She estimates she uses it for about five months a year when she returns from Austin, Texas, where she lives and works as a professor. Three months in the summer. One month at Christmas. Another during spring break.
And there begins her reasoning, and a range of others as well, against what the B.C. NDP government is proposing with its so-called speculation tax.

Council to vote on bylaw requiring electric vehicle charging points
via vancouversun.comCity council will vote this week on a bylaw amendment that would require all parking spots in new condos be equipped for electric vehicle charging.

Currently, the city requires at least 20 per cent of parking spots in new developments be equipped with EV charging infrastructure.

LIVE: 2018 Canada Sevens day two
via theprovince.comIs there any way to describe day one as having been a thriller? A great disappointment for Canada, perhaps.
After their 47-5 thumping of Uruguay, it’s hard to understate how confident the Canadians were feeling that they’d done enough to qualify for the cup round on Sunday.
But Australia had different ideas and somehow found a way to come back against the USA, winning 31-21 in the end.
So, here we are, on Sunday, with Canada playing the first game of the day against Scotland, rather -

Letters, March 12: ICBC fine print concerning which drivers are ‘at fault’ will be key
via theprovince.comThe key to reducing vehicle insurance rates is to target “bad drivers” and make them pay significantly more than good drivers. Trouble is, no one has yet defined what a bad driver is.Is it an accident-free, excessive speeder? Is it the Sunday driver type who has multiple fender benders with no serious accidents? Or is it both?
A more immediate concern for me is the use of the undefined term “at-fault driver,” in the all-but-enacted policies announced by the NDP provincial -

via theprovince.comRolling with the Canucks
While filling seats at Rogers Arena has been more of a challenge this National Hockey League season for the Vancouver Canucks’ brass, selling tickets to the team’s annual Dice and Ice fundraiser was much easier.
Once again hockey fans quickly snapped up every ticket to attend the team’s off-ice charity event, sponsored by Scotiabank. Held at Parq Vancouver, the ballroom foyer was transformed into a Vegas-style house of cards — complete with blackj -
Hilary Statton: Paying a living wage makes business sense
via vancouversun.comThe provincial government’s recent announcement that it will gradually raise British Columbia’s minimum wage to $15.20 by 2021 was, understandably, met with mixed feelings. The B.C. Federation of Labour (BC Fed) wants a shorter time span, while some businesses believe the hikes will undermine profitability and threaten jobs.
What’s not in dispute is the need for workers in B.C. to earn wages they can live on, and for Metro Vancouver that’s currently a minimum of $20.62 an -

Dr. Diane McIntosh: The B.C. Therapeutics Initiative twists the facts
via theprovince.com“Alternative facts” are not just a problem in politics. They are also a dangerous issue in medicine. The false association between vaccines and autism, for instance, has resulted in a resurgence of nearly eradicated, deadly diseases around the world.
B.C.’s doctors and pharmacists must be on the lookout for alternative facts now that the NDP provincial government has restored taxpayer funding of the Therapeutics Initiative, which claims to provide “evidence-bas -
Whitecaps 2, Houston 1: Caps break through for first win in Houston
via theprovince.comIt was a day of milestones, revenge and records for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The Caps strolled into Houston on Saturday, and after enduring wave after wave of crushing attacks of orange, staggered out with a satisfying 2-1 victory, their first-ever in the city.
Kei Kamara, in his 300th career MLS game, scored his 100th goal.
Brek Shea scored the game-winner, the second straight year the Texas native has scored against the Dynamo in Houston, though last year’s result was a 2-1 Houston win. -
Jason Botchford: No point dwelling on a Canucks season’s worth of ‘what ifs’
via theprovince.comWhen the Vancouver Canucks season ends, it’s going to be hard for head coach Travis Green to avoid being haunted all summer by two words: What if?
No one fully understood it at the time, but Bo Horvat’s injury on December 5 had the same effect as flying a paper airplane into a raging bonfire.
Since, the Canucks have played 40 games, one shy of half a season. They’ve won 11 of them, collecting 27 points — the fewest in the NHL.
That 55-point pace over an entire season -
