Dome Grown: Vancouver Whitecaps battle history, rivals in efforts to expand their audience
via vancouversun.comVancouver Whitecaps fans cheer on the team before last year’s MLS playoff game against the Seattle Sounders at B.C. Place, a full lower-bowl sellout.
It was 1979, September. The plane, a commercial jet, was subdued and quiet.
The Vancouver Whitecaps were winging their way back from New York, where they had dispatched Franz Beckenbauer and the star-studded Cosmos in an epic NASL semifinal before taking down the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a historic Soccer Bowl performance.

Mike Smyth: Notley won the battle, but who will win the pipeline war?
via theprovince.comPremier John Horgan seems just a tad sensitive to any suggestion that he wimped out in the great wine war with Alberta counterpart Rachel Notley.
The cross-border “grapes of wrath” were unleashed when British Columbia threatened to block shipments of Alberta’s heavy crude oil — diluted bitumen — to the coast for shipment by tanker to Asia.
Notley responded by banning the import of B.C. wine. That was met in turn by threats of legal action by the B.C. government and -

via vancouversun.comA B.C. girl living with a rare and potentially life-threatening form of juvenile arthritis has won access to an expensive drug.

Staffing is so low in some B.C. care homes that seniors can't shower or go to the toilet when they want
via vancouversun.comSo what difference would 22 minutes of extra care really make in the day of a senior living in one of B.C.’s care homes?
It might mean showering more than once a week. Or going to the toilet when they want. Or receiving more help at mealtimes.
It would mean regaining some dignity, advocates say.
“The difficulty is if you cannot choose how your day goes. It’s bad enough to lose your dignity when people have to help you toilet and bathe, but if you have no contr -

The Provies: The Shutdown Pair, 14 Minute Jake emerges, and Tommy Gun’s stock rises yet again
via theprovince.comAs Vancouver struggled with Snowmaggedon Friday night, the Canucks struggled with the Vegas Knights.
To be fair to all involved, the Canucks are not a good team, and the Vegas Knights very much are a good team, so the loss isn’t shocking.

You can pretty much set the Golden Knights expansion right beside -

Canucks Post Game: The Daniel delivery, the Nilsson hook, the Virtanen rebound
via theprovince.comLAS VEGAS — Points to ponder as the inconsistent Canucks hung with the league-leading Golden Knights until two goals in less than a minute of the second period Friday were pivotal in a 6-3 loss:
Daniel cuts to inevitable chase
Leave it to Daniel Sedin to tell it like it is.
The Canucks winger struggled to find superlatives because as much as the Canucks have beaten Pittsburgh twice and also have wins over Washington, Nashville, Dallas and Boston, they were really no match for the Gold -

Golden Knights 6, Canucks 3: Vegas puts on a show against inconsistent visitors
via theprovince.comLAS VEGAS — The buzz was all about the hosts and rightfully so.
Stocked with expansion-draft castoffs, playing with large chips on their shoulders and with a collective resolve to prove everybody wrong, the Vegas Golden Knights came as advertised Friday.
The NHL’s top team — and owners of the best home-ice record — were simply too much for the Vancouver Canucks. With names you recognize and some you don’t, they are the product of better expansion rules and an incred -

Opinion: Don’t kill ICBC, the goose that lays golden eggs
via vancouversun.comJust to be contrary, I’d like to suggest that the Insurance Corp. of B.C. — characterized so recently by Attorney General David Eby as a financial dumpster fire — is actually a valuable public asset, and one that British Columbians would embrace if they realized the extent of its contribution. The problem, which Eby only partly diagnosed, is that ICBC’s political masters have abused the corporation so badly that it’s in danger of losing all public support.

Michael Zwaagstra: More Canadian history needed in schools
via vancouversun.comLast fall, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario demanded that John A. Macdonald’s name be stricken from all public schools in the province. More recently, Halifax’s city council voted to remove the Edward Cornwallis statue that had stood downtown since 1931. Both decisions were vigorously debated at the time and public opinion remains sharply divided. These are two separate events about two different individuals. Nevertheless, the underlying theme is the same. Bo -
Letters: New Pattullo Bridge should have HOV lanes
via vancouversun.comRe: Pattullo Bridge to be replaced with province-owned, $1.4-billion bridge, Feb. 16.
I find it puzzling that the new Pattullo Bridge will not have high-occupancy-vehicle lanes. HOV lanes would aid the travel of transit buses over this key link over the Fraser River.
As well, considering the volume of slower-moving, heavy trucks on this bridge, a designated truck lane would help to smooth the flow of traffic.
I understand that, 30 years ago, the Alex Fraser Bridge had to be expanded to six lanes -
Editorial: Budget's estimated revenue may be wishful thinking
via vancouversun.com“A budget is more than revenue and expenses,” B.C. Finance Minister Carole James said in tabling the first New Democrat budget since 2001. “A budget is about people.”
With all due respect to the minister, a budget is by definition about revenue and expenses. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a budget as “a statement of the financial position of an administration (as of a nation) for a definite period of time based on estimates of expenditures during the period -
Brave New Work: Confronting the benefits — and costs — of the tech revolution
via vancouversun.comThe work we do — and the way we do it — is changing rapidly, and while these changes hold much promise, there is no guarantee that they will be all for the good. On the one hand, advances in robotics, artificial intelligence and communications have the potential to improve our quality of life. On the other, as the Brookfield Institute reports, 42 per cent of the tasks Canadians are currently paid to do can be automated using existing technology, disrupting industries and displacing w -
