Paul Rivas knows his paella. After all, he grew up eating the Spanish rice dish his father Francisco introduced to Vancouver decades ago as co-owner of the popular La Bodega restaurant. Now that Rivas is chef-owner of Bodega on Main, he’s continued the paella tradition.
“It’s my dad’s original recipe, and I always find it better than anything I’ve had in Spain,” Rivas says. “I love cooking paellas. They’re a little labour intensive, but they’

Environment Canada said up to 10-20 centimetres would fall in parts of Metro Vancouver with 25 centimetres of snow possible near the North Shore mountains. Areas near the water were expected to see lower amounts as the snow becomes wet or mixed with rain this afternoon and tonight.

Metro Vancouver demands public hearing for controversial Hazelmere development in south Surrey
via vancouversun.comA planned residential development in rural Hazelmere in south Surrey was described Friday as both a dangerous regional land-use precedent and a boost to young farmers and the local environment.
The Metro Vancouver regional board ultimately decided that residents should have a say at a public hearing before any final decision is made on the project.
Regional staff had recommended against the City of Surrey’s request to amend the Metro 2040: Shaping our Future land-use designation map in ord -

Conversations That Matter: The role of 'independent' media
via vancouversun.comSome newspapers dig. Some newspapers are a constant embarrassment to the powerful. Some manage to be entertaining, provocative and fair all at the same time. There are few such newspapers in Canada.
That’s from a report written in 1970’s by the Special Senate Committee on Mass Media. Were they right then, are they right now?
Mainstream media tries to report all the news that’s fit to print, but the reality is it can’t cover everything. E -

Whitecaps add seasoned veteran Sean Franklin to ‘hungry team’
via theprovince.comThe parallels are easy to draw. They play the same position. Their styles are similar. They both played NCAA soccer and were both picked in the top 10 of the MLS SuperDraft. Both made their professional debuts against the New York Red Bulls.
But they’re at opposite ends of their careers.
The Vancouver Whitecaps signed right back Sean Franklin on Thursday, a move aimed at providing competition for his young soccer doppelgänger, Jake Nerwinksi. Franklin has been with the team since -
Mark Milke: Utopian green policy and freezing Chinese citizens
via vancouversun.comThe problem with a perfectionist end accompanied by inflexible methods and pursued by linear thinkers is how real people suffer. Last October, 28 cities in northern China promised to cut particulate pollution by 15 per cent. Beijing countered by demanding a 25-per-cent reduction.
As Bloomberg reported, when the artificial reductions were scrapped in December, “a well-meaning anti-pollution push turned into a debacle.” The policy “had the inadvertent but -

Put some funk in your lunch: Fermenting foods is easier than you think
via vancouversun.comIf you are under 60 years of age, there’s a good chance you’ve never eaten a properly fermented pickle.
I’m not talking about a giant dill steeped in a jar of vinegar and polysorbate 80 produced in a factory in New Jersey. No, my friend.
Maybe you are the kind of food fan who seeks out chefs doing really old school recipes, which is increasingly a thing. Maybe you have bubbling crocks of veggies in your basement right now.
Maybe you are about to become that person.

Salut!: Say si to sangria, Spain’s thirst-quenching sipper
via vancouversun.comIt’s a hot, sunny day in Barcelona and after a day of rambling along La Rambla, it’s time for some refreshment. What are you going to sip? Sangria, of course.
The refreshingly fruity wine punch is perhaps Spain’s most famous export after Penelope Cruz.
But if you think sangria has had its day, it’s time to give it a rethink, especially with Spain and Portugal as the theme regions for this year’s Vancouver International Wine Festival (Feb. 24 to March 4, vanwinefest. -

via vancouversun.comVancouver Sun wine expert Anthony Gismondi presents his annual guide to the Vancouver International Wine Festival tasting room.
SPAIN
There is something very likable about Spanish wine and its producers. Maybe it is the underdog thing when measured against France or Italy, perhaps it’s the small producer culture, or the lack of conformity that is the charm. A plethora of indigenous grapes and naturally low-yielding vines that simply won’t overproduce is another asset. But I will leav -
