The Age of Walter Gage: How One Canadian Shaped The Lives of Thousands: book excerpts
via vancouversun.comFor some, the name is synonymous with a long-time University of B.C. fixture, the Walter Gage Residences, where students have hunkered down to study (and party) since the three signature towers were built on campus in the 1970s.
But for thousands of others around B.C. and across Canada, Walter Gage meant so much more.
The South Vancouver-born Gage was a University of B.C. fixture for five decades, from the moment he enrolled in classes on UBC’s Fairview campus in 1921, earning both a BA an -

Theatre review: Hot Brown Honeys make some impressive noise
via vancouversun.comHot Brown Honey
To Jan. 27 | York Theatre
Tickets and info: From $22 at thecultch.comPart hip hop concert, part pep rally, Hot Brown Honey is a loud, proud evening of consciousness raising; a series of lessons on race and gender that says you can have your revolution and dance to it, too.
It’s an immensely clever and entertaining show that blatantly sugar-coats, or rather honey-coats, its serious political message. Fighting the power, the Honeys promise, never tasted so sweet.

Conversations That Matter: Is democracy under attack?
via vancouversun.comIs democracy under attack? Have we let the people we elect off the hook? Are you involved in the decision-making process or are you merely a compliant customer who is being managed?
There’s no doubt we are polarized over the role of government in our lives. Is the role of government to create opportunities for markets to thrive or is it to create environments for people to thrive? The tug of war between the left and right rages on while the balance point between these two pe -

Jason Botchford: Back end needs to lead the offensive charge for the Canucks
via theprovince.comCOLUMBUS, Ohio — When Canucks head coach Travis Green took the job his eyes were wide open. He understood the biggest obstacle he faced was extracting offence from this roster.
Since the launch of the 2015-16 season, the Canucks are the lowest scoring team in the NHL, averaging a rather feeble 2.29 goals per game.
In his introductory press conference, Green said you can’t hide from the numbers and presented a framework to fix them.

This Week in History: 1937 A kidnapping in Tacoma ends in tragedy
via vancouversun.comThe kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh’s 20-month-old son in 1932 was one of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century. But it wasn’t the only infamous kidnapping in the 1930s.

Douglas Todd: Five ways to protect free speech on campuses, and elsewhere
via vancouversun.comFew issues more divide North American campuses than free expression. And conflict over it has further divided the right against the left.
More exceptionally, free speech is also pitting the left against the left.

Nadia Albano: Red a big hair colour trend for 2018
via vancouversun.comIt’s a big year for redheads. Even though you’re a brunette or blond, there seems to be more requests for warm, deep and vibrant copper and auburn hair. Many brunettes are attracted to chocolate browns with a huge amount of warmth, while blondes are leaning toward a strawberry blond as opposed to the icy cool of 2017.
Red hair is a stunning colour option for women with blue or green eyes and fair skin tones. It’s also a lovely way of bringing out the warm amber fleck in h -
