We’re revisiting our revisiting of the most significant trades in Vancouver Giants’ history.
Last year, we did a Top 5 list of the best deals ever for the Western Hockey League squad. This time around, we’ve stretched the list to 10. It gives us an opportunity to look at some recent swaps, and also recall some older ones. Last year’s ranking is in parenthesis for the applicable trades.
The WHL trade deadline for this season is Jan. 10:

2017: A year in classical music
via vancouversun.comVancouver’s burgeoning classical music scene had its hits and misses during 2017. There was also what seemed like an inordinate amount of administrative change, events that can’t help but shape the seasons to come.
For sheer drama, the year at Vancouver Opera was something exceptional. The idea of an intensive Opera Festival in the spring had its strengths: the chance to hear Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking and a rare (for Vancouver) performance of Verdi’s Otello. But vari -

Cowichan Search and Rescue needs new home
via vancouversun.comCowichan’s growing search-and-rescue outfit needs a new home — but not because they’re growing.
The real reason is somewhat ironic: prompted by the record-setting 2017 fire season, the Cowichan Valley Regional District decided they needed a better facility in case they needed an emergency operations centre.

Commercial Real Estate: Industrial property market 'terrible' for tenants — 'I can't really sugarcoat that'
via vancouversun.comIn October, 2016, National Concrete Accessories started searching for an industrial space for a new branch in the Surrey-Langley area.
It took six months to find a location near the Golden Ears Bridge that met their needs for warehousing, storage and showroom space. It could have taken much longer.
The maker and distributor of concrete equipment was lucky to find a decent space in what is becoming a seriously constrained industrial property market, and one that stakeholders say will experience l -

Wine Guy: Holiday Bubbly, the sequel
via theprovince.comIt’s the final Wine Guy column of the year, and well it only makes sense to go out with a bang. Which literally means a pop of the cork. Or for the romantics, an “apologetic cough,” which is the agreed upon barely noticeable sound a bottle of Champagne makes when properly (i.e. discreetly) opened.
A few weeks back we looked at local sparkling wines, so this time the focus is on bubbly bottles from abroad. All would make for a fantastic New Year’s toast, but they will also -

Top 10 new restaurants in Metro Vancouver for 2017
via vancouversun.comI’m usually speeding down the fast lane keeping pace with restaurants opening in a perilous industry, but at this time of the year I do a quick shoulder check.
It’s been another year of cautious optimism, mostly casual affairs except when backed by a high-end hotel (Botanist at Fairmont Pacific Rim, venues at Parq Vancouver, Mott 32 at Trump International). But it’s in the casual arena that Vancouver finds its soul. It’s a matter of making it sing.

Changing tastes prompting new park designs in Coquitlam and other cities
via vancouversun.comCities across Canada are rethinking their park spaces as play changes, replacing teeter-totters, golf courses and baseball diamonds with space for cricket, pickleball and play structures for all ages.
Coquitlam has set a goal of having a park or greenspace within a five-minute walk of all residents. The Metro Vancouver suburb recently redeveloped Rochester Park with a natural wood playground, zipline, trails, and sheltered picnic space in an example of how the city is trying to meet diverse need -
