Opinion: When we’re changing in health care, we’re saving lives
via vancouversun.comAt a recent Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) Open Forum, a member of the public approached me and offered this observation, “Seems all I read about in VCH lately is drugs.”
Looking at health headlines in 2017 it seemed there was only one health story — opioids, fentanyl and overdose deaths. But there are equally big stories taking place outside the media glare, stories that reveal innovation and commitment and, while quieter, are vital to everyone in VCH. Vital to our 2,100 docto -
Opinion: PhD not all it's chalked up to be: Too much time, too little reward
via vancouversun.comEuphoria ran through my veins as I read the offers. Earlier this year, political science departments from some of Canada’s finest universities offered me a spot in their PhD programs. Each was accompanied with guaranteed four-year funding packages, some even added enticing scholarships.
As someone who loves learning, getting paid to do it while transforming myself into a doctor was a no-brainer. Soon enough, though, sober thought slapped me in the face. Given that we’re in the season -
Opinion: Let's have an honest conversation about immigration
via vancouversun.comOn Dec. 18, we observed International Migrants Day, which was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2000. With immigration so firmly ingrained in “Brand Canada,” it offers an opportunity to re-visit the public conversation about its impact and maybe even dispel a few myths.
While our public is generally supportive of immigration, the recently unveiled three-year immigration plan has prompted some of its critics to renew their pushback — with claims that o -
Opinion: Electoral reform will deliver the full power of the vote
via vancouversun.comOne hundred years ago in 1917, most B.C. women won the right to vote in provincial elections. It took several more decades, but equality for all was achieved and every B.C. citizen of voting age became enfranchised. Thinking about these important advancements today we must ask ourselves: How consequential is this hard-earned right to vote under the current first-past-the-post system? Are our voices being heard? Does each voter take part in shaping the future of our province?
For the majority of -

Letters: Think of those less fortunate at Christmas
via vancouversun.comOn Christmas Day, there will be literally millions of British Columbians diving for presents under the tree and tucking into turkey and stuffing with their kids, grandkids, aunts, uncles, cousins and mums and dads.
