One night in February, Jacqueline Jordan’s ex-boss showed up at her door in Airdrie, Alta., with an outrageous offer.
“Jackie, I’m gonna change your life,” she said he told her.
He announced he was going to gift Jordan $1 million — a portion of the riches he said he had amassed from a lottery win and smart investments.
Jordan was skeptical. But over the following weeks, she said, he managed to string her along, showing her documents purportedly from various financia

Building access over railroad crossings to ease traffic congestion
via vancouversun.comOn an average day, the safety barrier at the Portside Road train crossing in Richmond comes down 37 times a day for a total of more than two hours each day. Drivers are left fuming in their cars and the ensuing traffic congestion gets backed up into several major roads nearby.
Similar scenes are playing out in other spots across Metro Vancouver and into the Fraser Valley, according to documents from the Gateway Transportation Collaboration Forum.

Douglas Todd: Is it OK to ask, 'Where are you from?'
via vancouversun.comA seemingly innocuous question has become contentious.
“Where are you from?” has turned into a multicultural minefield. What some used to consider a basic curiosity has become politicized.
Activists and a number of scholars have added “Where are you from?” to the list of phrases they judge as “micro-aggressions,” which they define as inadvertent slights that can do lasting psychological damage.
Asking someone about their place of origin seems to be espec -
Dan Fumano: With Nick's final meatball, 'old Vancouver disappearing'
via vancouversun.comFor half a century, when Jimmy Pattison entertained out-of-town VIPs, he always skipped the swanky spots downtown, and instead took them to a crowded hole-in-the-wall spaghetti joint in an apartment building’s ground-floor on a quiet block in the East End.

Glasgow and Loch Lomond: Four Days of City Grandeur and Bonny Country
via theprovince.comComing into Glasgow from the airport in a downpour I ask my taxi driver the best time to visit. “Anytime. Christmas time in London

“So here it is, Merry Christmas / Everybody’s having funLook to the future now / It’s only just begun…”

Family fun found beyond the parks
via theprovince.comFrom the comfort of my chaise, I watch my feisty five-year old sprint back and forth across the waterpark. After three-days of hoofing it around Disneyland and California Adventure Park, it seems impossible that she could have any energy left.
My husband’s snoring in the late afternoon sun. I can barely move. Yet somehow our daughter is completely unfazed by the 12,000-plus steps we clocked earlier today. Perhaps it was the ginormous, sugar-dusted churro she gobbled down in Critter County. -

Conversations That Matter: The brain that changes and heals itself
via vancouversun.comOur brains are so complicated that neuroscientists are still only at the beginning of understanding how that grey matter inside our skulls works.
For centuries the brain was completely misunderstood. Then, as we started to unlock the myriad regions and elements of the brain, a range of theories emerged about how it worked. Most have been set aside as neuroscientists introduced functional magnetic resonance imaging to map our brains.
Over the past 25 years, fMRI’s have reshaped ou -

via vancouversun.comI had heard about Madison Fine’s tragic overdose from several sources and from Real Scoop readers. So I confirmed details of what happened and have written this story.
Her family obviously saw her differently than police, who believe she has continued to run drug lines and be involved in some of the conflicts that have caused Red Scorpion faction to split apart.
But it is clear from her obituary, that she had a loving family who is already missing her.

The move has many residents outraged, including B.C.’s Environment Minister George Heyman, who said the government will look for ways to fight the decision. The city of Burnaby will also consider an appeal.
The NEB ruled the company is not required to comply with two sections of the city’s bylaws as it prepares to be -

Todd Talbot shares his holiday-party planning tips (guys, listen up)
via vancouversun.comTodd Talbot’s top tips for the holiday season are refreshingly simple: be genuine and don’t try too hard.
While these two tenets could just as easily be applied to that Tinder date you’re setting up for the end of the week, in this case, the Love It or List It Vancouver host is referring specifically to party planning.
“I like the word casual. You want your guests to feel comfortable and relaxed,” he explains. “If it’s too overdone, ther -

Letters: Banning police in uniform from Pride Parade goes against its ‘all-accepting’ policy
via theprovince.comI can’t believe that Vancouver Pride officials have banned uniformed police officers from future parades. As a gay man who came out in the early 1970s and who has been part of the community who has worked for years to have the cops relate to the community in a co-operative and respectful manner, I’m appalled.
The Vancouver Pride Society directors should be ashamed of themselves for adopting a policy that isn’t widely accepted by the city’s gay community. If anyone should -
Brian Minter: Decorate patios and balconies for winter with fragrant, fresh-cut branches
via vancouversun.comIn an earlier article I wrote about planting winter-hardy perennials and shrubs to create interesting living containers. Another hot trend, one that is easier yet equally spectacular, is to decorate patios and balconies for winter with arrangements made from fragrant, fresh-cut green branches.
About 10 years ago the idea of designing seasonal porch pots by repurposing tired summer patio containers began as an innovative recycling concept that grew into a celebration of winter and a way to create -

via vancouversun.comConstruction has hardly begun at the first of Vancouver’s temporary modular housing projects and already pushback is mounting against the city’s latest strategy to house its homeless.
Vancouver was granted an injunction earlier this week from the Supreme Court of British Columbia to dislodge protesters who were preventing work crews from accessing a construction site in the tony neighbourhood of Marpole.
Some residents feel blindsided by the move and are critical of a decision they f -

Sorry cake, we might be picking pie this holiday season

The Pie Hole’s Apple Brown Butter Rosemary Pie.
The holidays are a time to indulge — so, bring on the cookies and cakes. Oh, and pies too, please.
“Pie has become a staple on many tables during the holidays,” Jenell Parsons, owner of the Vancouver-based eatery The Pie Hole, says. “It is nostalgic and comforting.”
While crafting virtually any food, be it baked goods or savoury dishes, during the season serves up a good excuse to get family together
