1235 Davie Street | 604-669-5899
Open daily, 10 a.m. to midnight; daviedosacompany.com
Instinct isn’t always hiding in the basement of consciousness. When we saw Davie Dosa, a new neighbourly spot on Davie Street, there was a lone diner, a signal to keep on walking.
But we walked in and instinct revealed its hand.
First, Sharv Ramachandra confidently welcomed us. He’s the owner and if a restaurant isn’t doing well, an owner’s desperation is hard to conceal.

Letters: Pride-parade decision to ban police uniforms effectively puts officers in the closet
via theprovince.comMy heart sank at the decision to exclude the Vancouver Police Department from the Vancouver Pride Parade. The VPD is one of the most progressive police departments in the world, embracing and fostering a relationship with the LGBTQ community for decades. The diverse members of the VPD, including throughout its executive levels, is comprised of individuals who not only proudly embrace, but also live within the LGBTQ community.
While the message from the Pride Society shallowly defends their decis -
Film draws a picture of architect behind new Vancouver House tower
via vancouversun.comThe new twisty tower that is quickly rising at the foot of Howe Street is certainly attention-grabbing and, according to the documentary Big Time, that is what the architect behind the 59-storey Vancouver House skyscraper is all about.
In theatres now, Big Time, from director Kaspar Astrup Schröder, lets viewers in on architect Bjarke Ingels’ methods, and some might say his madness, as the 40-year-old from Copenhagen designs well outside the box.For instance, if you Google-image -
Classical music that's not for the season
via vancouversun.comIt’s a truth universally acknowledged that one can hear Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer too many times. Ditto the syrupy seasonal standards on those awful, awful shopping-mall CDs.
It’s just the early days of December and many of us are already fed up with our annual overload of holiday music. Thankfully, some of our top presenters offer quality classical music with no particular reference to the time of year.
True, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra does Christmas big-time with all tho -
2017 musical box sets for serious music fans
via vancouversun.comFace it. Buying music for serious fans can be a complete drag. It can really be a case of not knowing what to get for the person who seems to have heard everything already.
There is also always the risk that you get the lecture on the importance of so-and-so in terms of such-and-such obscure scene at some time in history for your efforts and wind up pinching yourself to stay awake.
Yet there is some satisfaction to be had in presenting someone with encyclopedic recall of the finest use of a Bigs -
Parallels drawn between pot legalization and the waning days of alcohol prohibition
via globalnews.caEvery province had its own approach to battling booze in the early 20th century. And, like the way the federal government has approached the legalization of cannabis, the rules for ending prohibition of alcohol were up to each province. -

On a Vancouver SkyTrain full of people, just one came to help teen in religious attack
via vancouversun.comWhen a man started yelling and hitting a young woman wearing a hijab on the Canada Line on Monday night, Jake Taylor didn’t hesitate.
“It was pretty autopilot,” he said Wednesday. “You see some smaller, younger person in danger, it was my initial reaction to help.”
The young woman who Taylor rushed to help is Noor Fadel, 18, from Richmond.
Two days later, Fadel said she’s “thankful to the people who were with me,” like Taylor.

Resist temptation to put up the tree too early
via theprovince.comQ. In recent years I’ve observed a few Christmas trees lit up in some of the homes in my neighbourhood early in December. How safe is it to have a cut tree indoors for three weeks or more?
A. I suppose it can be safe if the tree is a freshly cut one (with supple needles), a slice has been cut off the end to enhance water absorption, and it is kept well watered and frequently spray-misted. Christmas trees also must be sited well away from heat sources.
It is commonly recommended -
Homes at The Pacific designed to feel like ‘an oasis within the city’
via theprovince.comAs Vancouver’s skyline transforms and the downtown core becomes busier and more dense, the designers of the luxury interiors at The Pacific by Grosvenor Americas looked inward to create a haven for homeowners, a quiet escape from bustling urban life.
The vignettes in the display space offer a taste of simplicity and restraint with thoughtful detail to colour, neutral shade and shapes.“We wanted each home to feel like an oasis within the city,” says Cynthia Ziolkoski, a principa -
No way of determining what’s the norm where strata fees are concerned
via theprovince.comDear Tony: Our building is only seven years old. With the addition of a resident caretaker and concierge to manage our property, our strata is facing a massive increase in our condo fees this year.My monthly fees for a one-bedroom have gone from $419 a month in 2015 to $829 for 2018 — almost a 100-per-cent increase. If we continue to increase our fees at this rate, our units will no longer be affordable as several owners in the building are now facing a serious financial cash problem. -
