Monday Musings: Rejoice in Brock Boeser, free Jake Virtanen
via theprovince.comIn honour of a cold, wet weekend in Vancouver, here are the equally dreary Monday morning musings and meditations on the world of sports.
• In the Canucks’ 4-3 overtime loss to St. Louis on Saturday night, Brock Boeser directed nine shots at the net, scored a goal and was the only Canuck to produce anything of substance when the game was on the line in the third period.
For all that, his most impressive moment might have come in the defensive zone when he cut off Vladimir Tarasenko&rs -
Do you really save money shopping on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?
via theprovince.comQ: For the last 5 years a few of my girlfriends and I get together for dinner the night before Black Friday to map out our shopping strategy for the next day of madness. My husband thinks we are crazy and that’s when I remind him how addicted he’s become to Cyber Monday shopping. He laughs this off but the reality is that both of us take a day off from work just to shop. Some of our purchases end up on our credit cards and it takes us a few months to pay down the balances. I’m -

Letters: Use union firms to build Site C because ‘future is electric,’ reader says
via theprovince.comI liked the neutral position of Mike Smyth’s recent column on the Site C dam.
As a union electrician flying from B.C. to the Alberta oilsands, I can understand the various unions’ points. We all want more money and better benefits. The wage package difference between B.C. and Alberta is alarming. Wages are $11 an hour higher in Alberta, but the cost of living in B.C. is much higher.
I can also see wanting to do this job cheaper — or not at all.
If this project goes forward, use -
Brian Cochrane and Adam Van Steinburg: Community benefit agreements increase public return on construction investments
via theprovince.comThe B.C. government is considering the future of the Site C dam project — whether to complete it (our preference) or shut it down. Whichever side you take in the debate, it has giving B.C. a chance to think about how to get maximum value from public construction.
In our view, it’s time for B.C. to return to the collaborative model of construction management that prevailed before 2001. The provincial government spends billions of dollars every year on electric power projects, highways -
Douglas Todd: High migration can suppress wages … in some places, some jobs
via vancouversun.comThe boosters of high migration to Canada claim it’s the key to economic salvation.
Critics counter that large numbers of immigrants and temporary workers “steal jobs” and reduce the wages of the host population.
The truth, it is turning out, is somewhere in the middle.
The answer to one of the most controversial political questions in Canada — does high in-migration depress wages? — is complicated.
There is little doubt that Canadian politicians’ decision -

Crop theft a growing concern for some B.C. farmers
via vancouversun.comRichmond farmer Bill Zylmans recalls catching a man in his berry patch late at night, stealing strawberries with the help of a headlamp.
Another time, he went to dig up his potato crop and found it missing. His pumpkins regularly “gain legs and walk away.”
Crop theft has long been an issue for farmers, but anecdotal evidence suggests the problem may be growing like a weed in places where urban development is encroaching on agricultural land.
