We pushed the Vancouver Giants into feeling sentimental.
Spurred on by the idea of Vancouver 16-year-old rookie winger Aidan Barfoot bagging his first-ever WHL goal in a 5-4 road win over the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday, we asked several Giants about their initial tally in the league. They were all keen to tell their stories. They all had kept the lucky puck and knew exactly where it was stashed.
Here’s a sample of what was said.

Daphne Bramham: The welfare challenge isn't the price of food, it's housing
via vancouversun.comMy grandmothers knew all of the tricks for stretching a tiny bit of food a long, long way. They had grown up as homesteaders and were mothers with families to feed during the Depression.
A few years before she died, one grandmother predicted that all of that accumulated knowledge would be lost before it would be needed again. But she was certain that during my lifetime, people — maybe even her grandchildren and great-grandchildren — would once again need to know the secrets of the pr -

Herdman hoping this movie has happy ending for Canadian soccer, B.C. Place fans
via theprovince.comJohn Herdman took the hype train down another track.
Looking to help sell Canada’s women’s soccer game with the Americans on Thursday at B.C. Place Stadium, event organizers have given it this tagline: The Fiercest Rivalry in Women’s Sport.
It’s catchy. It sings. The #WNTRivalry works on Twitter. The problem with it all is that Canada hasn’t beaten the U.S. since 2001, when they took a 3-0 decision at the Algarve Cup. They’ve gone 0-27-5 versus the juggernaut -

Remembrance Day 2017: Metro Vancouver guide to honouring Canada's veterans
via vancouversun.comOn Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m., the Armistice of Compiègne went into effect, ending hostilities between the Allies and Germany — and marking the end of the First World War, then known as the war to end wars.
Every year since, Canadians have honoured their veterans and war dead with a ceremony and moment of silence on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
In the years after the Great War, the gatherings were small and unofficial. On March 18, 1931, -

Ryan Miller finds healthy balance between hockey and family
via theprovince.comANAHEIM, Calif. — Ryan Miller was pressed for time.
Getting his game back in order after a lingering wrist injury delayed his debut with the Anaheim Ducks until late October remains a maintenance priority.

Amid all this, Miller still finds time to talk. He always did. He -

Facing Canucks prospect Lind a litmus test for Giants
via theprovince.comThere’s a part of James Malm that’s intrigued in seeing what Kole Lind is all about up close.
Malm is a third-year centre with the Vancouver Giants. He has hopes of playing pro hockey one day.

Wine Guy: B.C.’s icon wines
via theprovince.comWhat exactly is an icon wine? It’s a roving target, to be sure. By definition an icon is “a widely known symbol,” or “a person or thing regarded as representative.” Thus an icon wine typically connotes a benchmark, an example of the best quality and typicity showcasing a wine region. Practically, this bears out as a limited production, top-of-the-wine-line offering from a winery. Of course, not all wineries will bother to release an icon wine, but in the relatively -
Opinion: Proportional representation a timely and urgent fix for our political future
via vancouversun.com“Winner takes all” is no basis for trust. On the contrary, any governance system that gives all the spoils to a single winner — especially a winner who is not even in the majority — is more likely to breed acrimony and disaffection. How much better it would be to implement a system that could draw out the best of everyone, in our organizations and in our country, liberating the creative and productive possibilities of collaboration.
