The provincial government is pursuing two new studies of the Fraser River white sturgeon, while First Nations conservationists call for the recreational fishery to be curtailed.
“We have a longtime moratorium on killing sturgeon that (First Nations) adopted voluntarily back in the ’90s,” said Ken Malloway, chairman of the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance. The alliance has also called for fishing to be banned on spawning grounds, similar to protections in place on the Columbia Ri

Heading for Home: Demand for new residential offerings expected to continue to be robust in the months ahead
via vancouversun.comCompared to last fall, when dozens of residential towers were launched in Metro Vancouver’s new-home market, real estate observers expect this fall to be a period of lower inventory, with smaller developments playing a prominent role in the marketplace.
These observers say demand still remains incredibly strong, explaining why prices have continued to rise for condominiums and townhouses this year. They do not anticipate that interest rate increases — there have been two this year &m -

This Week in History: 1932 A Sun columnist unlocks the secret to perpetual youth
via vancouversun.comEighty-five years ago, syndicated columnist Dorothy Dix claimed she had discovered the “Fountain of Perpetual Youth.”
But it wasn’t in some swamp in Florida, or in “jars and bottles with a French label on them.” To Dix, the secret to women staying youthful was much more simple: a happy marriage.
“A famous English doctor says that women who are congenially married not only live longer than old maids and divorcees and fretful, nagging wives do, but that they ret -
Kangaroo Care: The concept for B.C.'s biggest, soon to open neonatal intensive care unit
via vancouversun.comHigh technology equipment has made a huge difference in the survival of the frailest and tiniest of premature babies. But the latest evidence shows that having the proper environment in neonatal intensive care units and lots of old-fashioned skin-to-skin contact between parents and babies provide myriad health benefits for both.
So in the state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU, that opens next month in the new Teck Acute Care Centre on the campus of B.C. Children’s and -

Opinion: We need to fund fundamental science

Opinion: Philanthropists should pay more attention to seniors
via vancouversun.comA couple of months ago, James (not his real name) passed away. I would see him near my office door sitting in his wheelchair and watching people come and go in the front lobby at Queen’s Park Care Centre, a residential care facility for seniors in New Westminster.

Opinion: Forest fire prevention forces hard choices
via vancouversun.comThe area burned by wildfires this summer in B.C. is enormous by any measure. Over 1.2 million hectares as of Aug. 22, and there are still several weeks of fire season remaining. This wildfire season adds to an ever-increasing area burned over the past decade. Will we ever see an end to summers with this much area on fire? According to climate scientists, not likely. Climate predictions include longer fire seasons, more significant droughts (meaning more dead trees and more fuel for fires), more -
