Dan Fumano: With B.C.'s renter aid agency 'overwhelmed,' non-profits step up
via vancouversun.comPart 2 of 2
With B.C.’s renter protection agency stretched thin and “overwhelmed” by many accounts, groups of renters have recently been organizing to fill the gap as Vancouver’s housing crisis shows no signs of easing.
The work done by B.C.’s Residential Tenancy Branch, which mediates disputes between landlords and tenants, is “crucial” during a housing crisis, particularly in Vancouver where a majority of households rent, said Marie-Noel Campbell, -

Opinion: The death of us — how we sell out our kids
via vancouversun.comWe are in the vortex of an epidemic, and a generation is dying. But you won’t read a Centre for Disease Control or Public Health announcement declaring it so. At least not until it’s too late. While fentanyl deservedly gets the acute alarm that growing numbers of corpses usually evokes, the non-physical and less-quantifiable mental and emotional dying of our young from the addictive relationship with technology receives a shrug of the shoulders. One reason is that with fentanyl we do -
Opinion: B.C. finance minister must manage expectations in budget update
via vancouversun.comThere are a lot of expectations for B.C. Finance Minister Carole James’ upcoming budget update.
Supporters and critics will be watching to see how the NDP keep their campaign promises on housing, education, transit, poverty reduction, environment and job creation while sticking to a balanced budget.
James’ challenge is to find the sweet spot between tackling the social and environmental deficit left behind by 16 years of B.C. Liberal administration and demonstrating good fiscal manag -
Letters: Children’s ministry overreacted to dad letting young kids ride bus alone
via theprovince.comI’m noticing a severe disconnect between what the Ministry of Children and Family Development spokesperson says and what social workers on the ground do.They admit there are no laws to what age a child is expected to be able to ride on public transportation, but that didn’t stop them from telling Adrian Crooks that he was a bad parent to let his kids ride alone because they were not the right age. They cite safety and the children need protection, but fail to grasp that our area of t -

Surrey family worries about son in St. Maarten after Irma wrecks the island
via vancouversun.comThe Canadian government should be doing more to help medical students stranded on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten after Hurricane Irma, say family members of a Surrey student.
Manpreet Takhi moved to the island last week to start his first year of medical studies at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine.
Manpreet set up his apartment with the help of his parents and brother last weekend. Orientation was last Monday and his family departed the day before.

What we learned from the Canucks’ 6-2 loss to Flames at Young Stars
via theprovince.comJuolevi could be, uh, better
So Trent Cull thinks Juolevi played better today.
Sure hope he’s wrong.
The Canucks prized defenceman has done nothing here to help stall the oncoming “They should have drafted KellerZzzz!!” train.
And ultimately it’s Penticton and Young Stars so who cares.
Although Troy Stecher sure cared here last year on every shift. Haven’t seen much of that from these Canucks and certainly not today.
It was the start of July when Benning was boastin -
Olli Juolevi getting bigger, but so are Canucks’ expectations
via theprovince.comPENTICTON — Olli Juolevi has bigger things on his mind than winning Young Stars games.
For one, making the Canucks.
Last year, he had no hope. Too frail, they said. He wasn’t strong enough at 180-something pounds, it was explained.
It’s different now. In early July, Vancouver GM Benning boasted that Juolevi had hit 200 pounds.
That’s some bump, especially considering Juolevi’s season ended in late April.
Well, if these games in Penticton show anything, and they may -
