A fire investigation has given way to a murder investigation after a dead man was found inside a burning house in Surrey early Thursday morning.
Surrey RCMP were called to a house fire at 112A Avenue and 124 Street at 12:41 a.m., after firefighters discovered the body of a deceased male.

An alert citizen who reported suspicious activity to police is credited with helping to recover a stolen guitar.

NPA names candidates for Vancouver council and school board byelection
Hector Bremner, an energy company lobbyist and former Liberal government staffer, has been selected to represent the NPA in the Oct. 14 Vancouver city council byelection.
Currently vice-president of public affairs for the media relations firm Pace Group, Bremner is a former B.C. Liberal candidate who worked in various roles in 2014 and 2015 for former deputy premier Rich Coleman.

Fentanyl detected in 81 per cent of overdose deaths in 2017: coroners
About three people died per day of an overdose in the month of July, according to the latest numbers released by the B.C. Coroners Service.
There were 91 suspected drug overdose deaths in July, which is about three per day and which represents a 30 per cent increase over the same month last year. That brings the year’s total of overdose deaths up to 876, an 82 per cent increase over the same period in 2016 when 482 deaths were recorded from January to July.

Homicide police to investigate fatal house fire in Surrey
Homicide police have been called in to investigate a fatal house fire that took place early Thursday morning in Surrey.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is reportedly on scene at 112A Avenue and 124 Street, where a fire in a home was reported just after midnight.
Early reports say one man was found dead in the fire though officials have yet to comment.
A call to the Surrey Fire Service was directed to the Surrey RCMP. Messages left with police seeking comment have not yet been returned -

Man shot while driving on Highway 1 in Surrey: reports
Police are investigating after a man was shot while driving on Highway 1 late Wednesday evening.
The driver was headed west when the incident occurred around 10 p.m.; he then pulled off the highway and stopped near 176th Street and 96th Avenue on the border between Surrey and Langley. He has reportedly been taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Police then closed a section of Highway 1 for about two hours while combing the scene for clues.
