KAMLOOPS — British Columbia has extended a provincewide state of emergency because of wildfires that have scorched a record amount of land this season.

Senegal has it all for the adventurous traveller
via vancouversun.comPlage de Ngor, SENEGAL – It happened 30 km. off the stormy coast of Dakar near the western most tip of the African continent. That’s where I hooked into a 236 kg. dream marlin – more than twice my body weight – that was to be the fight of my sports fishing life.
I snagged him just as a fiery sun began to set and we duked it out for the next couple of hours. In the end I was totally depleted, nearly too weak to remove my fishing harness. I felt sick to the stomach and my h -

‘Scutt-eld’ season: Excruciating injury nearly shelves defending B.C. PGA champ
via theprovince.comShoulder pain can be par for the course for golfers, but the aches Gordy Scutt began experiencing this spring were unlike anything he’s felt before.
As a result of the soreness, which he said began in early April and was eventually discovered to be a calcium build-up in his shoulder, his 2017 season was essentially derailed.

via vancouversun.comRERUNS OF AUGUST: On this day 2003 years ago, 40-year Roman emperor Augustus kissed his wife and said: “Live mindful of our wedlock, Livia, and farewell.” Then, abiding by a favourite utterance, he died “quicker than you can cook asparagus.” Known previously as Mensilis Sextilis, the month was renamed to honour Augustus who “found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.”

Douglas Todd: Should Vancouver homeowners take the 'big profits'?
via vancouversun.comThe popular historian and poet George Bowering feels guilty about selling his Point Grey home in Vancouver at the market price.
He hates that real estate has ridiculously inflated in Metro Vancouver. He is appalled that there is no longer any real correlation between the city’s (tepid) median wages and its astronomical housing and rental costs.

In the face of hate, doing nothing isn't an option
via vancouversun.comWith all that’s happened since Donald Trump’s election and now with the American president’s unwillingness to denounce racism, hate, domestic terrorism and rifle-toting men in camouflage clothes, it’s hard to know what to do.
Yet, doing nothing isn’t an option. History teaches us that and it’s why Timothy Snyder’s book, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century, should be on this summer’s required reading list.
It’s simple, though -

Monday's solar eclipse: Where to go and how to watch it safely
via vancouversun.comIt’s where the fun is, Bruce Springsteen claims in the song, Blinded by the Light.
But even with 85 per cent of the sun blocked by the moon, please don’t stare at Monday’s partial solar eclipse. It’s as damaging as staring into the full sun, experts say.
“Even though the sun will be 85-, 86-per-cent obscured, it’s very important that people do not look at the eclipse with the naked eye,” Dr. Stanley Greenspoon of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada& -
Opinion: Wildfires can wake us to need for climate action
via vancouversun.comFor several months, my five-year-old daughter has had nightmares that cause her to wake up screaming. When we asked her what they were about, she refused to tell her pediatrician father and I, leaving two doctors feeling helpless. Last week, I started guessing, and she finally said in a small voice: “There are lots of fires.”
That should have been my first guess.

Opinion: Court precedents should encourage Canada to act on new pardon legislation
via vancouversun.comIt’s time for the federal government to take action on the issue of pardons in Canada. Since the government changed the rules in 2012, pardons have become more difficult to obtain and more expensive.
Recently, two provincial cases, in Ontario and B.C., have given some people with criminal records new hope for their futures. It was found that extending the wait times retroactively caused the punishment of the offender to be increased after sentencing. This affects people with indictable off -
Opinion: Binoculars over bullets
via vancouversun.comIt may have taken a while, but the tide has finally turned for our giant grizzly bear friends roaming the Great Bear Rainforest. As of Nov. 30 this year, once this fall season is over, all grizzly bear hunting in the region will be banned; throughout the province, all trophy hunting will be prohibited.
At Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort, having supported the initiative for three years with our “Bullets for Binos” program, we can’t be more thrilled. We have seen 10 hunters swap thei -
