Former Hydro boss withdraws reward offer for missing Aussie hiker Sophie Dowsley
via vancouversun.comFormer B.C. Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald has withdrawn her offer of a $10,000 reward for the safe return of missing Australian hiker Sophie Dowsley, citing safety concerns.
Dowsley, a B.C. Hydro worker, and her Canadian partner Greg Tiffin, a B.C. Hydro contractor, went missing near Harrison Hot Springs on July 8.
Tiffin’s body was discovered July 18 near a waterfall at Statlu Lake, one week after the pair were reported missing. The RCMP underwater recovery team failed to find Dowsley and po -

via theprovince.comBy Shane Jones
EDMONTON — Mike Reilly ran in a pair of touchdowns and passed for two more as the Edmonton Eskimos took sole possession of first place in the CFL with a 37-26 victory over the B.C. Lions on Friday.
The Eskimos remained the only undefeated team in the league, upping their record to 5-0. The Lions dropped to 4-2, with both of their losses coming against the Eskimos.
Edmonton didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as a 65-yard passing play from Reilly to Duke Wi -
Opinion: It's time for a rethink on taxing housing wealth
via vancouversun.comThe City of Vancouver’s latest round of housing-policy announcements, geared at opening up single, detached zones to a small amount of infill density, quadrupling housing targets for purpose-built rental homes at piloting a new affordable rental model is welcome news.
The new policies, combined with Canada’s first Empty Homes Tax, proposed short-term rental regulations and other recent action demonstrate a municipal urgency and willingness to experiment that other communities would b -
Opinion: Horgan must follow Barrett’s example on Massey Bridge
via vancouversun.comWhen Dave Barrett led the NDP to victory and became premier in September 1972, Vancouver was in the midst of a freeway revolt. East Vancouver and Chinatown residents had united against the planned downtown freeway and third crossing to the North Shore. Today, NDP Premier John Horgan faces a similar controversy over the proposal to replace the Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge.
Barrett could have gone for half-measures and tried to sell a more modest freeway into the downtown, combined with mod -
Natural gas demand growing worldwide
via vancouversun.comAs governments grapple with how to balance their books and Canadians wonder where the next wave of middle-class jobs might percolate from, consider a recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA). In it, massive worldwide demand for natural gas is profiled. The report, Gas 2017, contains useful nuggets for energy-rich Canada.
The release is particularly timely, given the sudden cancellation of Petronas’ planned $36-billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal in British C -
Marinovic brought in as Caps’ backup, but goalkeeper will push to play
via theprovince.comIf there was ever an indication of how popular David Ousted is with Vancouver Whitecaps fans, one only had to stroll through social media after the team signed another goalkeeper, Stefan Marinović, earlier this week.
Questions were raised about the intelligence of using two international roster spots on goalies, the intelligence of investing more money at the goalkeeper position, and, generally, questions of the intelligence of the Caps’ brain trust.
The bottom line is this: Ousted is -
Letters: ICBC is unnecessary
via vancouversun.comRe: Huge ICBC rate hikes loom without reforms: Report, July 22.
A leaked 203-page Ernst & Young report claims to require drastic measures and a 30-per-cent rate hike in order to keep ICBC operating.
They could have saved 202 pages. On one page, the report could have stated that the solution to B.C.’s auto-insurance problem would be to turn auto insurance over to private insurance companies.
A number of necessities of life are supplied by private industry with no shortages or -
Editorial: Gov't can change perception that it's anti-development
via vancouversun.comIt would be unfair to say Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company Petronas pulled the plug on its proposed $36-billion LNG plant this week because B.C. elected an NDP government. But it would be naive to claim it wasn’t a factor in the decision.
The reason was clearly not natural-gas prices, which were recently quoted at US$3.09 per million BTU, up from $2.79 a year ago. The price for natural gas was coming off a decade-low in 2012 when Petronas spent US$5 billion to buy Calgary-b -
Editorial: B.C. sends bad vibes to business
via vancouversun.comIt would be unfair to say Malaysia’s state-owned oil and gas company Petronas pulled the plug on its proposed $36 billion LNG plant this week because B.C. elected an NDP government. But it would be naive to claim it wasn’t a factor in the decision.
The reason was clearly not natural gas prices, which are well within their historic range.
Rather, Petronas faced interminable delays as both federal and provincial governments dawdled over tax and regulatory regimes and drawn-out environm -
