Four years after Lululemon Athletica’s founder Chip Wilson got into trouble over comments about the kind of women’s legs he said were best suited to his company’s pants, the Vancouver-based clothier is back in the news for similar reasons.
An Ohio woman says she was offered unsolicited advice from Lululemon staff at a store in Ohio about which particular pant styles would cause less friction between her thighs.
In a June 20 Facebook post, 21-year-old Jamie Kraig wrote “al

Back to the bush: Veteran B.C. firefighter values being 'a better asset out in the field'
via vancouversun.com
Wildfire season is around the corner, and Gord Shaw has seen his share of them.
Shaw started fighting forest fires in 1981 in the Interior’s Mackenzie region, where he still battles blazes today.
“I was awaiting a job working on Williston Lake on tugs, moving logs,” the 60-year-old said.
“Suddenly, they needed emergency firefighters.”
He’d deliver gear to the site, drop it off, return for another load.
Over the years he’s performed lots of duties, includ -

Richmond business dresses Trudeau kids for Canada Day
via vancouversun.com
Two days before Traci Costa was expected to deliver the outfits the children of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau were going to wear on Canada Day, she saw red — the wrong shade of red.
The red and white garb for Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien Trudeau were made with the wrong fabric, a bright tomato red instead of the rich cherry red that Costa had envisioned.
“I don’t think anyone would notice, but I’d know,” said Costa, CEO of R -
Paragon poised to put its Parq mark on B.C. Place with 'urban resort'
via vancouversun.com
With about 90 days to go before its scheduled opening, Paragon Development’s $640 million Parq Vancouver urban-resort development at B.C. Place remains more of a construction site than completed project.
The dark wood trim, marble flooring and ornately woven carpets that are in place remain mostly covered with protective layers of cardboard and thin sheets of veneer as a crew of about 800 construction workers continue installing finishing touches.
At this point there is a lot at stake: The -
Sliding Doors: Michael Bisping, Robert Whittaker & The Middleweight Division
via theprovince.com
How different would the UFC middleweight division look right now had Robert Whittaker and Michael Bisping fought, as originally scheduled, at UFC 193?
Announced on August 19, 2015, the bout was a brilliant piece of matchmaking at the time and a massive fight with a local hook for the November pay-per-view extravaganza set to take place at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.
It was the surging Australian upstart – arguably the top fighter from the host nation, riding a three-fight winning streak a -

Reckless disregard for fire safety in B.C.'s backcountry an ongoing problem
via vancouversun.com
Spotting the messy aftermath of campfires and fireworks in the backcountry should give anyone pause.
With a dry summer setting in, the smallest spark can cause the biggest fire — think of the human-caused McLure fire that burned a vast swath of forest and destroyed homes in McLure, Barriere and Louis Creek in 2003. It was started by a carelessly discarded cigarette.
Rene Lemckert is an avid backcountry user. A week ago on a ride up the Harrison East Forest Service Road, he came across a ch -

International students in fake marriage schemes to Canada
via vancouversun.com
The newspaper ads in India are the visible tip of a booming underground industry in fake marriages involving would-be international students.
The prize for the “spouse” whose family buys an instant marriage with a foreign student is back-door access to a full-time job in Canada and a fast-track to citizenship.
The matrimonial ads normally promise that the foreign students’ sham marriage, plus all travel and study expenses, will be paid for by the Indian families who are determi -
Record Reviews: Bison, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Sqürl, The Battle of Santiago and Hell's Gate Blues Band
via vancouversun.com
Bison: You Are Not the Ocean You Are the Patient (Pelagic Records): Ten years on, this Vancouver crew remains one of the heaviest of the region’s internationally raved-about metal scene. But the Bison (the B.C. is gone, now) you hear on this seven song record is a more agile act than the riff-riding behemoth that established itself with Quiet Earth. The first album to feature former Three Inches of Blood guitarist Shane Clark on bass doesn’t so much change up the sound as hone in on -

It’s hard to imagine in a today’s world of storefront yoga and tony designer shops, but Kitsilano was once the epicentre of hippiedom with rowdy live music venues like Rohan’s Rock Pile, low-key organic stores like Lifestream, and people smoking weed that was supplied by a dealer, not a dispensary. Once a year West 4th Ave. gets shut down from MacDonald to Burrard for a monster neighbo -

Letters: Bring back Socreds to return decorum to B.C. politics
via theprovince.com
I’m dismayed by the sadly comic disarray of our provincial parliament. I feel ungoverned.
Being a civilized, voting old lady, I propose someone bring back the civilized Socreds — disillusioned MLAs can defect to it and our sense of order will return. With decorum, good intentions to run B.C. well, and better manners and ethics than these three parties of second-grade-level, squabbling power-grabbers.
If I were still teaching, I would seriously make them write an essay about public se -
Lance Berelowitz: Urban planning lessons from Grenfell Tower disaster
via vancouversun.com
Did anyone notice how virtually all of the news images and videos of the recent fire disaster at Grenfell Tower in London were shot from some distance or from the air? There were no views from adjacent streets. This wasn’t just because of public-safety reasons, but something more fundamental: There are no adjacent streets. None.
In fact, one of the contributing factors in the unfolding disaster was that large fire engines had great difficulty getting right up beside the building and were t -
Jan Hoole: Ancient DNA reveals how cats conquered world
via theprovince.com
Humans may have had pet cats for as long as 9,500 years. In 2004, archaeologists in Cyprus found a cat skeleton buried in a Stone Age village. Given that Cyprus has no native wildcats, the animal must have been brought there by humans.
Despite our long history of keeping pet cats, felines aren’t the easiest of animals to domesticate. There is also little evidence in the archaeological record to show how cats became our friends and went on to spread around the world.
A new DNA stu -

Willes’ Musings: Canucks are new — but remain far from improved

KINGSTON, Ont. — Following our national holiday, here’s something else worth celebrating every 150 years, the Monday morning musings and meditations on the world of sports.

Have a nice weekend? I did.
Still have today off? Lucky you.
Did you sign a big new contract on Canada Day? Did you thank your teammates for helping you get to where are today? There’s now plenty of evidence that who your linemates are have greater impact on your production than your opponents do.

It's summertime, and relocating invasive species is easy
via vancouversun.com
It’s summer in B.C. and an army of invading plants and animals is on the move.
Hitching a ride on ATV tires, trailing from boat motors and enticing novice gardeners, the invaders’ advance is swift and stealthy.
It’s also deadly.
“Summer in B.C. is the time for recreation and gardening — and both are key pathways for invasive species,” said Gail Wallin, executive director of the Invasive Species Council of B.C.
