Young jockey's 'spirits as good as can be' after suffering broken back at Hastings Racecourse
via vancouversun.com
Apprentice jockey Jose Asencio was competing last weekend at Hastings Racecourse when his horse clipped heels with another horse, sending the young jockey and his steed tumbling into the dirt.
While the horse, a three-year-old named McCallum, walked away uninjured, Asencio wasn’t so lucky. The ensuing spill fractured a vertebra in his back and broke his leg, among other injuries. He was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries. He now has a steel rod in h -

Downtown Eastside decrepit hotels vital, but temporary answer to housing woes: experts
via vancouversun.com
Despite the rats, roaches and clogged toilets at decaying rooming houses and hotels in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, activists and experts say they provide necessary affordable housing to the poorest people who would otherwise be pushed onto the streets.
The Balmoral Hotel recently became the focus of the housing crisis in the neighbourhood when the city issued an evacuation notice for about 143 tenants after it determined the building is at risk of collapse.
Vancouver’s bylaws defi -

A B.C. NDP minority government will feel the crack of the whip
via vancouversun.com
Gerard Janssen remembers the day then-premier Glen Clark was left pounding on a locked door after arriving late for a vote in the B.C. legislature.
Clark’s blunder in May 1997 nearly lost the government the vote. Janssen, the party whip, punished the New Democrat premier with four nights of house duty and a cancelled trip to New York.
Not even the most powerful person in provincial politics was above sanction by Janssen, who as whip ensured politicians were in the house when they needed to -

No rest could prove wicked: Shamrocks follow up first loss of WLA season with Maple Ridge showdown
via theprovince.com
Corey Small will battle one of the Western Lacrosse Association’s best defences and fatigue tonight.
Small, the Victoria Shamrocks’ left-hander who tops the WLA in scoring, leads his squad against the Maple Ridge Burrards in a 6 p.m. tilt at Cam Neely Arena on limited rest, since the Shamrocks were on the road facing the Coquitlam Adanacs Saturday night.
The Adanacs, buoyed by a stellar 35-save effort from Dan Lewis, came away with a 7-6 victory at the Coquitlam Sports Centre to hand -
Youth dominate street beat in crushing Abbotsford's fun Police Challenge Run
via vancouversun.com
ABBOTSFORD — Bob Rich once told a breakfast crowd in this patch of Fraser Valley pasture that “crime is toast.”
Posing for pictures before Saturday’s 27th annual Abbotsford Police Challenge Run, the chief constable also joked that anyone trying to pass him in the morning 5K would be, too.
So, at about the 1K mark, as we shuffled past Rich and the police torch-carrying Callun Hay, the chief blurted: “Hey Gord, the back of your shirt is on fire!”

Buyer beware: Duty-free shopping whammy
via vancouversun.com
I don’t usually buy duty-free anything in airports, thinking it’s usually more hassle than it’s worth and the supposed bargains often don’t turn out to be bargains.
So it was a bit of a shock when, after I finally relented and brought some Carlos 1 brandy at one airport duty free shop in Europe, it was soon seized by customs officials at another airport.
Falsely believing the boxed bottle of Carlos 1 brandy was safely tucked into a World Duty Free shopping bag, we were tr -

Father's Day gift guide: Give the gift of good grooming
via vancouversun.com
It’s almost Father’s Day, so, the big question becomes: what are you going to buy dad?
While the items on his wish list likely include, oh, a shiny new John Deer ride-on lawn mower, an even-shinier Omega watch, a vintage cab sauv (or a delicious IPA) and a tasty meal centred around a perfectly marbled steak, there are a few more personal presents to give him this year.
Rather than gift an old go-to, why not treat pops to something a little more, shall w -
Dermod Travis: In B.C., some ridings are more equal than others
via theprovince.com
Elections have two key components: the race and the mechanics — the legislative process and administration of the vote.
The race gets the media coverage, not so much the mechanics, even though it can have far more of an impact on the results than many might imagine.
The number of registered voters didn’t get much attention during the campaign. In April, there were 3,156,991. Notable because it’s 19,464 voters less than there were in 2013.
In a province like B.C. that shouldn&rs -

Ed Willes: Buono fires shot across bow — second-fiddle defence not fine
via theprovince.com
KAMLOOPS — In 2016, the B.C. Lions finished third in the Canadian Football League in scoring defence, fourth in passing yards, fourth in completion percentage and second in touchdown passes allowed.
True, they were dead last in an area we’ll get to later but, all things considered, the Lions’ pass defence would receive a passing grade from most adjudicators.
Just not Wally Buono.
“They were fine,” the B.C. Lions head coach sneered. “But I don’t want to b -

Letters: Reducing natural-gas use is a good thing
via vancouversun.com
Re: We’re not selling Hawaii’s weather: Canada’s economic advantage is in resources, Opinion, June 2.
Mark Milke says he agrees that reducing carbon pollution is important, but uses the majority of his opinion piece to attack the businesses, organizations and governments trying to solve the problem. The City of Vancouver’s green-building policies were one of his targets and he misses the mark by a wide margin.
Those policies will reduce natural-gas use, and that’s a -
Editorial: Mobility pricing is on the table
via vancouversun.com
In 2008, TransLink and Metro Vancouver undertook a consultation process that consisted of 60 presentations in which 2,700 participants provided feedback, two public-opinion surveys that tapped 9,000 Metro residents and an online poll that drew thousands more. The results showed support for some system of road-pricing, a policy that subsequently became one of the Mayors Council on Regional Transportation recommendations to raise revenue and reduce congestion.
However, the mayors lumped it in with -

Hikers rescued after getting stranded on Coquitlam's Eagle Mountain
via vancouversun.com
Two hikers have been rescued after getting stranded near the summit of Eagle Mountain, also known as Mt. Beautiful, north of Coquitlam.
According to Michael Coyle of Coquitlam Search and Rescue (SAR), the hikers called for help shortly after reaching the peak, when the trek back down the mountain became too dangerous.

HONG KONG ANNIVERSARY
When Hong Kong was handed back by the British in 1997 to become a special administrative region (SAR) of Mainland China (for 50 years), many wondered how long this arrangement would last.
