Union Gospel Mission wilderness program helps men overcome addiction
via vancouversun.com
GARIBALDI PROVINCIAL PARK — Looking out on Cheakamus Lake, Tom Sauls recalls how he would often stand at Crab Park in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and gaze north at the mountains, dreaming of someday escaping homelessness and addiction to find refuge in the wilderness.
Sauls, 57, would take swigs of strong beer beneath the stars and picture himself climbing the green hills to look down upon the glimmering city. In his mind, Burrard Inlet would finally separate him from the shou -

On Tuesday morning, Transit Police were called to the downtown Vancouver Waterfront Station SeaBus terminal for the report of a man yelling and waving a stick around.

Jeff Paterson: Blink, and your shot at the Stanley Cup is gone
via theprovince.com
A tweet from hockey writer and statistical analyst Tyler Dellow earlier in the week got me thinking. Dellow posted to social media: “Good way to realize how hard it is to get to the final is to go back and look at a team that lost and count the players who get another shot.” I decided to take him up on that offer and examine the post-season histories of the 20 players in uniform for the Vancouver Canucks on the night of June 15, 2011.

B.C. Lions cut quarterback Price, leaving third-string pivot job to newcomer Ross

The B.C. Lions cut 12 players Saturday morning, including quarterback Keith Price, who was last year’s third-string pivot.
Newcomer Alex Ross, a 24-year-old Coastal Carolina product, is the lone quarterback left on the roster after Jonathon Jennings and Travis Lulay.
Ross did get some NFL interest, including a tryout with the Atlanta Falcons.
In January, Lions GM and coach Wally Buono gave this scouting report on Ross to our Mike Beamish: “He’s not big. And he’s prob -

The treatment she received, however, may have been less than ideal. Craven alleges hospital security restrained her and stripped her naked after she be -

via vancouversun.com
Diane Sorochuk is a 23-year-old teacher and vice principal. She is gearing up for a trip and wanted style update for summer.
Diane has medium textured and slightly wavy hair. It was previously lightened and she is ready to go little brighter for the summer. To lighten her overall colour, I applied very fine weave-foil highlights round her hairline and did some customized hair painting for a ribbonlike colour effect. To colour balance her highlights, I used a warm-golden blond tone to compliment -

Ed Willes: Travis Lulay savours the time he has left
via theprovince.com
KAMLOOPS — The other day, Travis Lulay glanced up from the sweat and misery of two-a-days and saw his old teammates, Bobby Singh and Sherko Haji-Rasouli, taking in the Lions’ training camp.
They looked tanned and relaxed. They looked pain- and stress-free. Lulay, who was none of those things, was about to say, ‘Hey look, there’s Bobby and Sherko.’ Then he realized those names didn’t mean a lot to 95 per cent of the players at Lions camp.

It’s back to the future for the Bowker Collection, Abstract Developments’ new project in Oak Bay, one of Western Canada’s oldest municipalities.
The Bowker Collection’s rusticated brick facade is a nod to the historic neighbourhood, while the solar-ready building and an electric car for residents are forward-looking elements of the four-storey development, the first residential multi-family mixed use project approved by the District of Oak Bay in more than a decade.

Victoria actor Emily Piggford being rewarded for her love of work
via vancouversun.com
Victoria actor Emily Piggford first came to attention with her work in Impulse Theatre. The movement-based performance company known for site specific works was started by her former classmate Andrew Barrett. She toured Toronto with the company for the Summerworks Festival five and a half years ago. At the urging of her agent, she stuck around. It was a good move, and she hastily set about establishing a busy career.
Piggford has gone on to work in such varied series as Netflix’s Eli Roth- -
The Home Front: Home furnishings to match the beautiful outdoors
via vancouversun.com
It’s hard to beat nature when it comes to beauty, but some designers are doing a pretty good job at complementing it through home decor and furnishings that accessorize outdoor living and entertaining.
The Sun caught up with two designers whose products encourage us to spend more time in our backyards, on our porches and patios.
Sandy Chilewich launched her innovative textiles company, Chilewich, in 2000, believing the woven vinyl material traditionally used for outdoor furniture upholster -

Opinion: Cetaceans do not belong in aquariums
via vancouversun.com
It is perfectly legitimate to debate the ongoing relevance of established democratic institutions, and I — as an elected Vancouver park board commissioner — welcome constructive criticism of our deliberations and decisions.
To suggest, however, as The Vancouver Sun has done in a recent editorial, that the park board be abolished because of its recent vote to expand the ban on displaying cetaceans in Stanley Park is to ignore mounting public, scientific and ethical considerations.

When you have 10 Grammy Awards lined up in a row on your mantle and your most recent album Dig In Deep debuted at #10 on the Billboard Album Charts, does it matter if you get called a blues woman, folk rocker or roots artist or not?

Public services need public scrutiny to protect public interest
via vancouversun.com
The federal government’s new infrastructure bank has become increasingly controversial over the last few months. Studies have suggested the bank’s projects will be expensive and slow to advance. The high-priced developments will likely be out of range for all but the largest municipalities.
However, little attention has been paid so far to what is perhaps the biggest reason for controversy: The lack of public transparency about the public-private partnerships the bank will support.

Opinion: Stop Victoria spewing sewage into sea
via vancouversun.com
Green party Leader Andrew Weaver is trying to shut down the wrong pipeline. He laments the potential environmental threat of the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline while right on his doorstep the City of Victoria actually allows millions of tonnes of raw sewage to be pumped into the sea.
Victoria pumps the equivalent of a tankerload of raw sewage into the ocean on a daily basis and this has been going on for decades. Where has Weaver been on this issue? Where are all the Green protesters? Why has t -
Opinion: Farmland speculation: The buck stops with municipal politicians
via vancouversun.com
In his May 26 article, Postmedia reporter Sam Cooper noted that the B.C. government’s decision to exempt farmland from the 15-per-cent foreign buyers tax is fuelling runaway speculation on property in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
He also noted that several other provincially sponsored tax breaks have been contributing to an agricultural land rush in the Metro Vancouver area — lower property taxes on farmland that meets minimal production levels, a 50-per-cent break on school and tr -

Adopt-a-school can help kids thanks to readers and supporters
via vancouversun.com
The Vancouver Sun’s Adopt-A-School program has so far this year sent more than $623,000 to 85 schools across the province to feed hungry children and ensure they are properly clothed.
Since it began in 2011 the program has raised close to $4 million to help teachers and principals struggling — with few resources — to deal with the effects of poverty in the classroom.

UFC Auckland: Lewis vs. Hunt Punch Drunk Predictions
via theprovince.com
While I’m not particularly fond of six-fight main cards and FS1 pacing, Saturday’s UFC event from Auckland, New Zealand, is actually sneaky good if you’re not hung up on names and simply embracing seeing competitive, entertaining fights.
With Derrick Lewis and Mark Hunt scheduled to trade heavy artillery in the main event, the night should end in emphatic fashion, and before we get there, some veteran stalwarts and blue-collared middle tier talent will throw down.

Taking tropicals outdoors takes some adjusting
via vancouversun.com
At this time of year when we tend to spend many more hours outdoors, more folks are creating a tropical living space on their decks and patios.
It’s a fun trend and today there is a wide selection of tropical plants that are relatively easy-to-care-for and love the sun and warmer summer weather.
The only caution is the need for acclimatization. Most of these plants have either been grown in warm greenhouses or are recent arrivals from Florida and-or California.
No matter which tropical pla -
