Growing Things: Protect and prune grapefruit tree to encourage fruit production
Q: About two years ago I found a sprouting seed inside a red grapefruit. I had never seen that before so, just for fun, I planted it. It was slow getting started, but now I have a grapefruit tree of over three feet, and growing so vigorously it’s scary. It spends summers on the deck, and winters inside in a south-facing window, which is when it gets its new growth, for some reason. Anyway, I’m full of questions. How big will this tree get? Sooner or later I’ll have to trim it b -

Thursday's letters: Kenney equipped to fix economy
Re. “Minister Kenney did nothing for Alberta,” Letters, April 20
To say Mr. Kenny is not from Alberta is correct but he is not the only premier to not be born in the province. Most Albertans were not born here which does not diminish their contributions to our prosperity.
To say that Mr. Kenny just needs a job infers he has no intentions of improving this province’s dismal economic performance over the past 10 years. His past experience with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation an -
Building a better surgeon: Simulation lab could literally put rookies in best hands, say U of A researchers
The most skilled surgeons may one day literally guide the hands of rookies thanks to research at the University of Alberta.
“I would say over 90 per cent of resources in a health-care system are used to study diseases and patients. But our lab is looking at issues related to the operator. We take a unique approach to health care by having surgeons as our subjects in our lab,” said Bin Zheng, an associate professor of surgery at the U of A who leads the Surgical Simulation Research La -
Public school district wants suggestions to improve access to alternative programs
It’s the time of year when some Edmonton parents nervously await news of whether their children were accepted to alternative school programs.
Be it French immersion, a Christian alternative or arts enriched, programs with a specialized focus can be in high demand.
In suburban southwest Edmonton, Edmonton public school trustee Nathan Ip said Wednesday the population of children has grown so fast, little room remains to offer alternative programs at school buildings close to home.

Will some team reach in the 2019 draft, allowing Edmonton Oilers to "pull a Bouchard"?
The question is not whether the Edmonton Oilers will get a top young forward prospect in the 2019 draft, it’s which one will fall to them. Will they luck out and get a player they greatly covet, as happened last year when Evan Bouchard fell to the Oilers in the 10th overall spot?
Will one or two teams draft for need in 2019, as a few teams did last season, meaning a player the Oilers rank near the top of the draft will fall to them in the 8th overall spot?
It’s certainly possible. Ev -
