Incoming UCP MLAs Jason and Jeremy Nixon will become the first brothers to serve in the Alberta legislature at the same time.
“We’re pretty tight. We shared a room for 16 years,” said Jeremy Nixon, who won a provincial seat last week in Calgary-Klein. “There were six boys and we were the oldest two, so we were kind of the ringleaders, in cahoots most of the time.”
His older brother Jason Nixon, re-elected for a second term in Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre, prev

Two women on a motorcycle were slowing down behind traffic as they were struck from behind by a cargo van traveling at high speeds, police said. Both women were thrown off their bikes as the cargo van continued thr -
'The future of transportation': Federal gov't investing $430 million in zero-emission vehicles
To reach the target of only zero-emission vehicles being sold across Canada by 2040, the federal government announced $430 million of investments in the 2019 budget to entice residents to make the switch.
Minister of Natural Resources Amarjeet Sohi released the details of the financial and accessibility incentives for Canadians at an electric car charging station outside the Londonderry Mall Simons in Edmonton Tuesday morning.
“Our solution is zero-emission vehicles. It is the future of tr -
Marvel pulls a Thanos on Star Wars in Top 10 highest-grossing film franchises
Growing up a nearly friendless Star Wars junkie and glancing an occasional eye at how much money those first three films made between 1977 and 1983 — slowly creeping up to an unprecedented $1 billion back then — it was impossible to imagine some other franchise would ever top those staggering, world-record earnings.

'First day of school': Incoming Alberta MLAs learn the ropes at the legislature
Rookie incoming MLAs arrived at the Alberta legislature Wednesday to learn the ropes, getting advice on everything from how to engage in respectful debate to watching their waistlines.

He told new members that the stress of the job will make it challenging to eat often or healthily, and noted they will miss hockey games, graduat -

Edmonton weather: Wind is the ruiner of all things
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured 3.4 C with 8 km/h winds out of the west, southwest.
I hate the wind. I imagine hell is incredibly windy. All the time. Just non-stop wind blowing dust and debris in your face as you squint through your eyebrows. Now I’m not saying Edmonton is hell (though sometimes…) but the wind is sure going to make things a little annoying today -
Wednesday's letters: A better way to keep streets safe
City council’s recent motion to apply 40-km/h limits to all local residential roadways in Edmonton is shortsighted and does almost nothing to address our Vision Zero goals.
If Edmonton wants to make our streets safer, there is a better option. Research shows that a driver-pedestrian collision is far more survivable at 30 km/h than at 40. A passionate group of Edmontonians is proposing the #YEGCoreZone, also called Livable Streets, where all local residential roadways would be 30 km/h and a -

Heather Klimchuk: Elections mean new starts and bittersweet farewells
We all survived Election 2019 and the overall voter turnout of 70 per cent for Alberta is certainly something to celebrate. Elections Alberta developed some very innovative approaches like encouraging voters to vote anywhere at locations as diverse as the Edmonton International Airport, Ikea and even the Telus World of Science Edmonton. Kudos to this fresh approach and I am hopeful that when we do this again, it will be even easier.
A transition is a change from one thing to the next as in a job -

More awareness, improved police training needed to battle hate in Alberta: report
Increased awareness, training and resources are needed to combat extremist views in Alberta, according to a new report categorizing and quantifying hate groups in the province.

Kenney election promise could spell trouble for in-situ oil sites
Jason Kenney’s election promise to remove the oilsands emissions cap will likely have far-reaching consequences for Alberta’s in-situ oil projects.
It all stems from federal Bill C-69, which would overhaul Canada’s energy regulatory process and change the rules for project approvals.
In-situ projects extract bitumen too deep to be mined, generally by using steam. They comprise around 80 per cent of Alberta’s oil reserves.
Federal Natural Resources Minister Amarjeet Sohi t -
Final tally paints a picture of how Alberta voted
Elections Alberta workers completed their unofficial tally of votes on Friday, giving Albertans the first complete glimpse into how voters marked their ballots on April 16.
When it reconvenes in May, the legislature will be dominated by fresh faces since 45 of 87 MLAs will be new. There are 26 women and 61 men, leaving the legislature about 30 per cent female. There will also be five MLAs named Jason, all representing the United Conservative Party — Jason Copping, Jason Stephan, Jason Nixo -
Elise Stolte: Brilliant and truly awful infill designs pitched in Edmonton design competition
Genius. This new design competition by the City of Edmonton was a stroke of genius.
Twenty-five pitches for new, medium-density projects in Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods — all vetted for technical and financial viability — are now online and they range from brilliant to the truly appalling.
With concrete examples of what developers want to build, city council should now know exactly what its new rules should allow and, just as important, what it should be banning completely. -
David Staples: Bad greatly outweighs the good in Trudeau's energy policy
The Trudeau Liberals are getting some things right when it comes to energy policy, but they’re also making some huge mistakes with ugly consequences for Canada’s economy and First Nations.
The latest misstep? The Liberals’ misguided plans for regulating Alberta’s in-situ oil industry.
About 80 per cent of the oilsands is too deep in the earth to be mined. Instead in-situ oil is extracted using specialized techniques, such as injecting steam into deposits. The industry was -

Player grades: Evan Bouchard, Luke Esposito & Joe Gambardella lead Bakersfield Condors to huge win
The Bakersfield Condors employed a Keep It Simple Stupid strategy to hammer the Colorado Eagles 5-2 in the third game of their opening series of the Calder Cup playoffs.
The idea was get the puck in, control it, move it to the point, then go hard to the net to screen the point shot. This strategy saw the Condors score four out of its five goals on screened or deflected point shots. Oilers prospect Evan Bouchard was involved in three of those goals, two of them coming on his fast and hard shots o -

'Slow zone' pitched to lower speed in Edmonton city core
A community plan to slow traffic in the city core through both lowered speed limits and physical changes to roads is headed to city hall Wednesday.
A proposed slow zone would see speed limits drop to 30 km/h on local roads, as well as the installation of temporary traffic calming measures such as raised crosswalks, moveable concrete barriers, painting roadways to change the angle of corners to slow down drivers as they turn, or even allowing more street parking, which can encourage lower speeds. -

City moves forward with 'transit villages' plan for Northlands site
The future of K-Days and the amount of public funding are questions swirling around the redevelopment of the 220-acre Northlands site as the city is moving forward on a plan centred around two “transit villages” and a mix of residential and commercial space.
Still in its early stages, the high-level plan is due for additional public feedback and tweaks, but project manager Lyall Brenneis made it clear Tuesday repurposing the Northlands Coliseum isn’t on the table.
