'Slow zone' pitched to lower speed in city core
A community plan to slow traffic in the city core through both lowered speeds and physical changes to roads is headed to city hall Wednesday.
A proposed slow zone would see speed limits drop to 30 kilometres per hour on local roads, as well as the installation of temporary traffic calming measures such as raised crosswalks, moveable concrete barriers, and using paint to change the angle of corners to slow down drivers as they turn. Or even allowing more street parking, which can encourage lower -

Two people are in hospital — one in critical condition — after the motorcycle they were riding Monday was rear ended by a van at high speed, ejecting both the driver and passenger from the motorcycle, Edmonton police said.
According to a Monday evening news release, the collision occurred at around 2:50 p.m. after reports of a serious collision on Anthony Henday Drive, between 111 Avenue and Yellowhead Trail.
Police said two women were riding a motorcycle heading north on the Henday, -
A new version of The Tempest launches vital conversation about inclusion
If you thought Shakespeare was challenging, try reading it, understanding it — and then interpreting it for an audience — when English isn’t your first language.
That’s the extra layer of complication that Thurga Kanagasekarampillai faced when she began to develop her role as Miranda in the Citadel’s production of The Tempest, which debuts Thursday in the Shoctor Theatre and runs until May 12.
Kanagasekarampillai is deaf; her first language is American Sign Language -
After a brilliant second season, Star Trek Discovery boldly going where no one has gone before
Season two of Star Trek Discovery boldly went where no one had gone if not exactly before, at least for a long, long time.
And, SPOILERS AHEAD, Michael Burnham cried. Like, in every single episode.
Yet it’s a series that fully found footing in year two — replacing the tedious Ash-Tyler-as-Klingon switcheroo (that I still don’t actually medically understand) with stories that were more meaningful and, most importantly, “Star Trek”-like.
The second episode, New Eden, -

International acts write their own take on jazz and fusion
As a child growing up in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Igor Willcox never got the chance to know his father because he was only nine months old when Willcox senior died. But there was still an enduring influence in the father’s wake via the collection of old jazz records he left behind, albums by Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Weather Report, and other pioneers of the fusion realm.
Maybe it’s in his DNA, since his mother was a singer and his father a vibraphonist-bandleader.
At 38, Willcox is one -

Edmonton weather: Enjoy the double-digit temperatures while it lasts
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Monday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured 5.7 C with 7 km/h winds out of the west.
So it’s going to cool down a little. This is Edmonton after all and it is still April so this is to be expected, I suppose. So by the weekend we can expect temperatures in the 5 C range for a high and as low as -3 C overnight. Before all that, though, today is still expected to be quite nice, with mos -
Tuesday's letters: Where's proof for anti-oilsands campaign?
Re. “Canada should accept Kenney’s olive branch,” Danielle Smith, April 19
I am writing to take issue with Danielle Smith’s April 19 column. In these times when “fake news” seems to proliferate like dandelions in summer, it is sensible to insist that allegations be backed up with reliable documentary evidence.
It appears that neither Ms. Smith nor Mr. Kenney took this elementary precaution before quoting Vivian Krause’s “diligent research.” I -
Opinion: After Notre Dame, what to do with historic places of faith?
It was our wedding day near Bordeaux. The flowers from Notre-Dame de Paris were the most beautiful of all those we had received. The father of the bride (my “beau-pere”) had previously served as finance director at Notre Dame and his friend, the Bishop, had sent along this gesture of congratulations. As groom, I was far from the Parisian expectation: a half-Indian, half-Scottish Canadian Anglican Priest. This cathedral knew that times were changing and somehow, my story was touched b -
'We're kind of a bowling hotbed here': Edmonton's five-pin bowling team strikes out competition at provincial championships
Edmonton will represent Alberta in all five divisions of the Canadian 5-pin open bowling championships after sweeping the provincial tournament — the first team to do so in its 50-year history.
The team of 18 from the Edmonton 5 Pin Bowlers’ Association will now roll into the national tournament in Surrey, B.C., at the end of May, hoping to continue its winning ways.

Keith Gerein: Reduced NDP has makings of fierce opposition, if MLAs can leave their frustration at the door
Shrunk in half, tossed from power, and forced to watch its most hated rival celebrate, the recent provincial election was a bitter pill to swallow for Alberta’s NDP.
The next couple of months are sure to be even worse as what remains of the NDP caucus will get a front row seat to the new United Conservative government taking a flamethrower to much of its work from the past four years.

The Top 9 candidates for the Edmonton Oilers' General Manager job, rated and ranked
I’m finding that a lot of Edmonton Oilers fans have a pretty firm opinion on who or what would make the perfect General Manager for this franchise.
In a hockey town like Edmonton that comes as no surprise. And I see a lot of smart opinions. But while the passion is palpable, when you quiz some folks on their choice they often have no specific reason for favoring one or disavowing another. A candidate who I might think is pretty substantial another person may immediately (and often somewhat -
