Rebecca Hung decided it was time to start thinking about spring cleaning.
On Friday morning, she began with a walk around the perimeter of her family’s Kenilworth home. She was tired — having gotten home from vacation at 2 a.m. the night before — and thinking about Easter dinner that day.
It was then she found the hole.
“I just turned around the corner and there was a huge, gaping deep hole,” Hung said in a phone interview Friday afternoon. “I just looked down

'Can't be stagnant': Edmonton police take page from Thunder Bay report on systemic discrimination
A report on systemic discrimination against Indigenous people by Thunder Bay police could influence policing in Edmonton.
Edmonton police recently completed a review of the landmark Broken Trust report, a two-year study of the Thunder Bay Police Service by Ontario’s Office of the Independent Police Review Director.
The Thunder Bay report found evidence of systemic racism on the force and issued 44 recommendations — including a recommendation that the sudden deaths of nine Indigenous -
'Transit villages': Old Northlands land plan would add LRT station, see mixed use development
A pitch for redeveloping the old Northlands land and surrounding area is headed to the city’s urban planning committee Tuesday.
The high level plan is centred around two “transit villages” and would feature two LRT stops, a mix of housing and commercial space, as well as space for Concordia University to grow northward.
The 89-hectare site won’t be fully built out for 20 to 30 years, but Ward 7 Coun. Tony Caterina said there’s already a lot of interest from develope -
Hundreds of faithful gather for Way of the Cross
Hundreds of believers gathered in Edmonton’s inner city on Good Friday for a walk focused on faith and the fight for a more just society.
Walkers sang hymns and listened to talks at the 39th annual Way of the Cross, which followed a circuitous, two-kilometres route through the city’s Boyle Street and McCauley neighbourhoods.
In the Christian faith, Good Friday commemorates Jesus’s crucifixion. Easter celebrates the resurrection.
Jim Gurnett, who helped organize the event, said -
Can Edmonton Oilers afford to slow-play Evan Bouchard? Can they afford not to?
Lots of feedback and some pushback to my previous post in which I noted how the Edmonton Oilers played their last 25 games in a lost season without a single Entry Level Contract anywhere on their active roster. In theory this was an early step in CEO Bob Nicholson’s declaration that “We want our younger players to develop more in the American Hockey League. I think that we bring them up a little bit too early in hopes that they’re going to be ready when they’re really, re -
Infill complaints to City of Edmonton surge again in 2018
The city’s infill police handled another big jump in complaints in 2018.
The infill compliance team’s 2018 annual report is headed to city council’s urban planning committee Tuesday and shows a 51 per cent increase in complaints from residents who took issue with activities by builders or their contractors working on developments in existing neighbourhoods.
Citizens filed more than 1,200 complaints about infill, and the city team issued more than 1,100 warnings and more than 40 -
Three to See Saturday: Ace of Wands, The Tempest and Python's Holy Grail
The Radiation Flowers/Hot Garbage/Ace of Wands: Quite the trippy indie rock lineup for 420. I reached out to Toronto’s dreamy Ace of Wands about their latest record, here’s what singer Lee Rose had to say: “Lioness is an album that explores different aspects of nostalgia. Each song delves into a different aspect of self-perception and the longing we can feel for both pleasure and pain. The lyrics and music reveal a rejection of what I thought I knew, and an acceptance of what i -
Edmonton weather: Smatterings of Good Friday rain, appearances of sun
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Friday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured 7 C with 13 km/h winds out of the west, northwest.
April showers bring May flowers. Such is the case Easter Friday, with a little bit of everything weatherwise in the basket — a little bit of wind and 30 per cent chance of rain this morning followed by a mix of sun and cloud later in the day.
Today’s forecastToday: Cloudy with 30 per c -
Does Steve Yzerman hiring in Detroit make Edmonton a more or less likely landing spot for Ken Holland?
Later today, the Detroit Red Wings will welcome home Steve Yzerman as their new General Manager.
While no doubt some Oilers fans were hoping that Stevie Y would consider bringing his act to Edmonton that was never, ever in the cards. There has been a months-long campaign to re-unite Yzerman with the Detroit organization and it was the primary reason why Stevie Y left Tampa Bay in the first place.
The far more interesting question this decision now presents is: Will Ken Holland stay in Detroit? O -
Resident accidentally runs over spike belt during Edmonton takedown, thanks police nonetheless
A Parkland County resident who drove into the middle of a high-risk police takedown last month took the time to formally thank Edmonton city police officers for helping keep a bad situation from becoming worse.
The resident, who was not identified, submitted a formal compliment to city police, which was included in a report presented to the Edmonton Police Commission Thursday.
The person was driving home on the evening of March 12 around 11:30 when they found themselves in the middle of a &ldquo -
Friday's letters: Parents shut out of school-closure decision
Re. “Catholic board votes to close St. Gabriel K-6 program,” April 18
I can respect Edmonton Catholic School District’s decision yesterday to close St. Gabriel School based on financial considerations. What I cannot abide by is the illusion of “extensive community consultation” and “responsiveness to parents’ questions and ideas” that ECSD was conjuring.
None of the trustees met with any of the parents past the initial Jan. 30 consultation meeting -
Danielle Smith: Kenney offers an olive branch; Canada should take it
The rest of Canada should have no doubt that Alberta premier-designate Jason Kenney is prepared to do what it takes to fight for Alberta, even if it means turning off the taps to B.C. or holding a referendum on equalization to reopen the constitution. The key is: Don’t make him go there.
My favourite part of Kenney’s acceptance speech was when he called out the Rockefeller Fund, Tides Foundation, the David Suzuki Foundation and LeadNow for using foreign funds in a campaign to landloc -
Watch: Kenney and Notley meet to discuss transition of power
In a cordial meeting at Government House on Thursday, Premier Rachel Notley met with premier-designate Jason Kenney to discuss the transition of power before the new premier is sworn into office on April 30.
Notley, who plans to stay on as Opposition leader, said the two leaders discussed various issues including Bill 12, the turn-off-the-taps legislation brought in by the NDP to choke off oil exports to British Columbia.

David Staples: 'Eco-colonialists' blocking jobs and prosperity on First Nations, businessman says
Businessman Calvin Helin wants to bring jobs to his impoverished hometown on the Lax Kw’alaams First Nation on the northwest British Columbia coast, but there’s a powerful group blocking his dreams.
Helin sees a new kind of colonialism — this time imposed by wealthy, big city environmentalists and their allies in the Trudeau government — thwarting the desire for work and for dignity for his old community.
Eco-colonialism, Helin calls it, led by “elitist, latte-slurp -

FORT MCMURRAY — The company formerly known as Nexen Energy has been fined $450,000 after pleading guilty to charges in the deaths of two oilsands workers in northern Alberta.
The two men died from an explosion at the Long Lake facility near Anzac on Jan. 15, 2016.

Are Edmonton officers 'de-policing' in the wake of street check debate?
Edmonton police have been conducting fewer street checks since the controversial practice came under scrutiny, leading some to question whether officers are “de-policing.”
The Edmonton Police Commission received a statistical report on street checks at its Thursday meeting — the first such report since Edmonton’s debate over street checks began in 2016.
Insp. Warren Driechel told commissioners that officers submitted 4,947 street check reports in the last six months -
'He just can't die without justice': Family, RCMP asking for local tips in 2017 killing of Edmonton teen in Surrey, B.C.
Police believe Edmonton residents have key information to crack the unsolved 2017 killing of a local teen in Surrey, B.C.
Cpl. Frank Jang of the Lower Mainland’s homicide investigation unit made a plea to the Edmonton public Thursday morning asking for people to come forward with any details they have on the cold case.
Tanner Krupa, 19, was found dead in a Surrey back alley around 5 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2017. The Archbishop O’Leary High School graduate had moved to the B.C. city from Edm -
Violent swarmings at Clareview Recreation Centre have police on alert
A series of violent swarming attacks at the Clareview Recreation Centre in the last several months, including one where a teenage boy was shot in the face with an airsoft pistol, has police sounding the alarm.
There have been 11 swarmings in and around the northeast sports hub where teenagers were robbed and assaulted between January and early April, city police said Thursday in a news release. The teen shot in the face suffered a “life-altering injury,” according to police.

College cancels Edmonton pharmacist's licence and registration for $400,000 worth of improper claims
A former Edmonton pharmacist and pharmacy owner must pay nearly $80,000 in fines and costs and is banned from owning a pharmacy for a decade after a professional regulator found her guilty of five counts of professional misconduct.
Earlier this month, an Alberta College of Pharmacists tribunal also stripped Shereen Elbayomy of her registration as a pharmacist in the province for “egregious breaches of her duties.”
It’s one of the most severe penalties the college has imposed in -

Police are currently on scene at a bank in Sherwood Park responding to a bomb threat.

Police searching for fraudsters who stole $600,000 worth of rental equipment
Edmonton police are investigating a series of rental equipment thefts after $600,000 worth of vehicles and equipment was stolen in the city and across the province.
Police launched the investigation into multiple fraudulent rentals dating back to last June in which items were falsely rented from Edmonton companies by using a business name familiar to renters.
“It is alleged the suspects contact rental companies by phone, then fraudulently book vehicles and equipment using a business name f
