Premier-designate Jason Kenney met with outgoing premier Rachel Notley Thursday, both promising a smooth power transition following an antagonistic campaign period that ended with a UCP victory.
“The election is behind us,” said Kenney, adding he hopes the legislature fosters a culture of mutual respect and civility.
Notley, who plans to stay on as opposition leader, said the two leaders discussed various issues including Bill 12, the turn-off-the-taps legislation brought in by the N

Watch: Edmonton's mosquito season swarms to life
Edmontonians can expect an average mosquito season this summer with numbers expected to peak in July, according to City of Edmonton Pest Management Coordinator Mike Jenkins.
“Last year it was cold right until the end of April so we had a really late season,” said Jenkins. “This year we had a roughly normal start to the season in terms of timing, but it’s been very chilly at night so there’s been less activity for the larvae.” -

Old Man Mikula's Controversial Opinions: Alberta election exposed the blurst of us
It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times. On Tuesday night the churning stumble of blind primates in ballot booths wrote the next four years of Alberta’s future. When the patios of Whyte Avenue are no longer graced with Shirtless Rollerblading Guitar Dude, but instead get Jerry-Can Gasoline Man and his comedic foil 2×4 Guy, you know change is afoot.
The incumbent NDP ran on the eco-socialist platform of “build dat pipeline.” Pre-election favourites, the United -
Growing Things: Monitor soil moisture level to help ensure healthy trees
Q: I have two giant spruce trees in my backyard and I never water them. How do you check the soil for moisture levels after the spring melt is completed? Where should I check in relation to the tree and how?
A: There are two ways to check for moisture levels. You can invest in a moisture meter, available at most garden centres and online. There is an overwhelming selection on Amazon.ca, just search for garden moisture meter. If you don’t want to use the high-tech approach you can use the o -
Woman sexually assaulted in field last month: Edmonton city police
Edmonton city police are pleading for information to help find a violent sexual assailant who dragged a woman into a field before assaulting her.
The woman in her mid-20s was found suffering serious injuries, wearing only a shirt and yelling for help near 103 Street and 114 Avenue around 5:45 a.m. on March 10, said police in a Thursday release.
Investigators say the woman had been walking north on the west side of 101 Street sometime between 2:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. March 10 when she neared a bus sh -

Thursday's letters: Elections favour a two-party system
Like the last election, most Albertans are probably unhappy about the election results in some way. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
There would be less animosity and polarization between political views if the results truly reflected the political leanings of our population. In this election, we had the equivalent of a choice between a hamburger and a salad bar. This is because our first-past-the-post election system is designed to be a two-party system.
It is very difficult for a thir -
Keith Gerein: Edmonton could be shortchanged for top cabinet posts in Kenney government
The day after an election can be described as something of a hangover experience.
For candidates, political staff and volunteers, it often means an actual hangover, stemming either from a long night of enthusiastic celebration, or a long night of drowning one’s sorrows.
For most Albertans, however, it’s a time to start clearing the fog of a frantic, bitter campaign and to focus on the dynamics of a new political landscape. There are questions to be asked and a host of new faces and n -
Wine column: Celebrate Easter with easy-drinking wines from France's Loire region
Whether you are celebrating this Easter weekend with a traditional meal or something a little less conventional, the real question is, what to drink?
The Loire wine region in northern France is often overlooked but offers wines with overall crowd appeal and the added benefit of balance of fruitiness and freshness, making them ideal to sip on the deck or to pair with an array of foods, including ham, lamb, poultry, salad and seafood.
The region is massive — encompassing forests and hills on -

Slide guitar great returns with new take on Indian classical tradition
It’s hard to place the occupation of Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya in just one word. He has expanded the scope of Indian classical music through his hybrid approach to several related musical cultures and continues to add original compositions to the centuries-old raga repertoire. He uses a smartphone app as the quiet, hypnotic backdrop to most of his concerts, and the set of custom-designed string instruments he plays didn’t exist 30 years ago.
“You can call me a mad, crazy in -

Edmonton weather: Sunshine and 19 C. Someone find me a patio, pronto!
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured 0 C with 7 km/h winds out of the southwest contributing to a slight -2 wind chill.
Thirsty Thursday, anyone? I don’t know about you, but after the last month of non-stop election coverage and a long weekend coming up I’d say we’re all due for a nice cold beverage — or eight. Luckily, the weather gods seem fit to agree as -

Court decision allows 9/11 families to go after Iran's Alberta assets
Families of people killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be able to go after Iranian government assets in Alberta after a multibillion-dollar judgment was registered in this province.
According to court records, an Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench master registered a US$7.01 billion judgment against Iran and a dozen of its agencies and state-owned companies on March 13 in Edmonton.
With the decision, Alberta became the latest Canadian jurisdiction to recognize the massive judgment, origi -
Now is the time for Caleb Jones, Ethan Bear & William Lagesson to prove their NHL quality
The clock ticks fast on young hockey players, so fast that if a young defenceman has not made it to the NHL in his 22nd year, he’s unlikely to ever establish himself as a Top 4 d-man on his team.
In other words, the clock is ticking loudly on top Edmonton Oilers prospects Caleb Jones, Ethan Bear and William Lagesson.
All of them have played strong two-way hockey at the American Hockey League level this year.
Lagesson has impressed with his strong positional defence, his aggression and his -

St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School to close, building to host behaviour challenges program
A co-ordinated letter-writing campaign, new student recruitment drive and alternative proposals from parents ceased to prevent the Edmonton Catholic school board from voting to close a Capilano-area elementary school.

City pours slab for new city hall fountain; festivals decide on different venues for 2019
Crews began pouring the concrete slab for the replacement fountain in front of city hall Wednesday, and officials said they’re on track to open the pool and surrounding plaza this summer.
“We’ve got a 12-hour continuous pour, about 290,000 litres of concrete, which is about 75,000 milk jugs. We’ve got a concrete truck coming through on site every 20 minutes, and we hope to finish up later on this evening,” project manager Eugene Gyorfi said Wednesday.

What's the buzz? City expects modest mosquito numbers this summer
As the city’s mosquito management program gets underway, experts say Edmontonians can expect an average mosquito season this summer with peak numbers set for July.
A crew of 20 to 25 city workers have taken to the roads and sky scouring the greater Edmonton area as they work to identify mosquito larvae hot spots. Mike Jenkins, the city’s pest management co-ordinator, said the estimated $1-million annual program is facing difficulties this spring due to chilly evening temperatures.

Kenney extends olive branch to fellow premiers, plans to name cabinet April 30
Premier-designate Jason Kenney said he will pursue a diplomatic path with Ottawa and fellow provincial governments, including with Quebec counterpart Premier François Legault, who reiterated Wednesday that there’s no social acceptability for a new oil pipeline crossing Quebec.
Legault said his province would be open to a gas pipeline coming from Alberta, but not an additional oil pipeline.
