An 86-year-old woman who was mowed down by an SUV outside a west-end KFC last July has died.
An obituary posted on Dignity Memorial said Catherine Marie Triplett died April 2, about eight months after the crash where Triplett suffered life-threatening injuries.
Edmonton police spokesman Scott Pattison confirmed Triplett’s death in an email Friday afternoon, but said attempted murder charges against Triplett’s 60-year-old daughter Donna Colleen Elder haven’t been upgraded and th

Athabasca RCMP used reasonable force during arrest that caused serious injury: ASIRT
RCMP officers in Athabasca used reasonable force after shooting an armed suspect while responding to a domestic call, ruled the provincial police watchdog.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate a March 2 arrest that left one suspect in hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound in the abdomen. They determined that officer’s use of a firearm during the arrest was lawful.
“The officer was lawfully entitled to act in defence of herself an -
Watch: Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel speaks about K-12 education funding in Edmonton
The Alberta Party is looking to raise the province’s grades in education should it be elected as government. Leader Stephen Mandel announced at a press conference overlooking the North Saskatchewan River that they would open up 60,000 new spots for students over four years, taking money from other areas to fund the enrolment jump.
“There’s absolutely efficiencies we can find. We need to press school boards to find ways in which they can diminish what their costs are,” Man -

TransEd to shutdown 95 Avenue to complete delayed Valley Line LRT work
TransEd is shutting down 95 Avenue until the end of the 2019 construction season in order to speed up work on the delayed $1.8-billion southeast leg of the Valley Line LRT.
The decision will close the avenue between Connors Road and 85 Street starting April 28; it’s slated to re-open to traffic in November. The closure of the avenue will allow for work on roads, sidewalks and rail tracks to be completed by the end of the year, a full year faster at this location than the original plan, the -
Alberta Party leader would build hospitals, shorten wait times, improve service
EDMONTON — Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel says a government led by him would build hospitals, shorten wait times and provide predictable funding for public health care.
Mandel says his government would go ahead with new facilities in Edmonton and Grande Prairie, an expansion at the Red Deer Hospital and finish construction of the new Calgary Cancer Centre.
More non-acute care beds outside hospitals, improved home care options and new care clinics to take the load off emergency rooms w -

'Courtesy tow': Street sweeping across the city to roll Monday, weather permitting
Motorists who don’t move vehicles to make way for Edmonton street sweeping efforts may get a “courtesy tow” to a nearby road but they won’t be ticketed, says the city.

The 2019 Edmonton Music Award nominees are in!
Like clockwork, we get a shot of our beautiful, energized and truly eclectic music ecosystem: the ninth annual Edmonton Music Awards nominees have just been announced.
Past the dinosaur age of gender-splitting nominees, the big category to watch — and get to know, song by song — is Album of the Year, this year a genre-hopping art race between Six Shooter Records’ singer-songwriter Joe Nolan, multiple award-winning soul singer Nuela Charles, hard rock outfit Royal Tusk -
Edmonton Oilers fans hunger for a major purge of Bob Nicholson and front office
The results of the Edmonton Journal and Sun survey of Oilers fan are in and let’s just say it’s not good news for Bob Nicholson and the remaining members of the Oilers management team. All told, 9,250 fans took our survey, which is an utterly massive sample size. It gives us a real sense of what the hardcore are thinking.

Belly dancing bares bodies, and souls, through exercise and community
It’s not easy to find a fun and affordable hobby that appeals to men and women from 12 to 70. But the stage of the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre was replete with representatives of that very demographic on a recent Sunday.
All of them were belly dancing as part of a rehearsal for an end-of-term performance hosted by Bedouin Beats, a belly dance studio north of downtown near Alberta Ave.
If you thought belly dancing had gone out of style along with Mediterranean restaurants and plat -

Rachel Notley: Let's keep building economy and supporting Albertans
In advance of the April 16 provincial election, Postmedia has asked the major party leaders to tell us why they should become premier of Alberta. In the last of our series, we present Rachel Notley, leader of the Alberta NDP.
This election is about who will be premier, about who will lead in today’s Alberta.
My main opponent, Mr. Jason Kenney, believes that Alberta can return to an imagined past. He promises to roll back action on diversification and climate, shout at Canada about pipeline -
Opinion: Diversifying Alberta's economy needs innovation, not ideology
The Alberta election on April 16 will be won or lost on the basis of how Albertans view its economy. A pivotal part of that is the health of the province’s associated innovation ecosystem.
In March, the Alberta Council of Technologies Society (ABCtech) and the Economic Developers Alberta (EDA) together surveyed more than 500 business and community leaders and academics about Alberta’s economy. The findings were troubling.
Members told us that Alberta’s economy is not diversifie -
Friday's letters: Thales taking the blame for LRT fiasco
Mayor Don Iveson should be right in saying Thales is not being made a scapegoat, but in appearance it is. Every bit of blame for the Metro LRT mess and the endless negative aspects of other LRT lines falls squarely on the shoulders of Iveson and city councillors.
Why was it decided that a program Thales said had never been used before was the one the city elected to use? Why did the city make changes? What made council so confident that they ignored the warnings from Thales?

What inmates think candidates should know about life inside Alberta's jails
As work neared completion on the new Edmonton Remand Centre, the Progressive Conservative government faced a decision.
The centre, which opened in 2013, had been wired so that each cell would have a television. The jail’s management was in favour, and several judges have argued allowing inmates to watch TV in their cell would make for a more humane facility, especially for inmates in segregation.
But when it came down to it, both the Progressive Conservatives and their NDP successors balke -

Elise Stolte: UCP plan to kill Edmonton superlab ignores dangers of the status quo
Expert reports on the state of medical lab services in Edmonton make for grim reading.
Seventy per cent of major health decisions are based on a lab result, but Edmonton’s facilities are aging and outdated.
It’s not just the private DynaLife headquarters, which are crowded, stuck in a downtown office tower never designed to host a state-of-the-art lab. Equipment in Edmonton’s public labs is obsolete. More than three-quarters of the lab equipment owned by Alberta Health Services -
David Staples: Alberta needs Notley's wisdom and Kenney's fight to win oilsands campaign
The public relations campaign to thwart the Alberta oil industry is winning, the latest evidence being a new National Geographic hit piece. It goes so far as to allege that the harm inflicted by the oilsands on Alberta’s First Nations is the equivalent of the U.S. slaughter of buffalo herds in the 1870s to starve out the Plains tribes.
“It’s the buffalo kill all over again. Starve us to weaken us,” the magazine quoted Eriel Tchekwie Deranger, a member of the Athabasca Ch -
Alberta Election 2019: With Brian Mason gone, can the NDP hold one of its most reliable seats in Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood?
Population: 43,550
Eligilble voters: 29,782
The riding of Edmonton-Highlands-Norwood has been about as reliable an NDP seat as any in the province.
The question this election: does that continue after Brian Mason?
Last year, the longtime NDP MLA and former party leader announced he would not run again. Former premier Ralph Klein famously said Mason was so popular in the riding that “you’re going to need an atomic bomb to get him out of there.” In 2015, Mason won again with near -

What's next for Edmonton Pride after impasse leads to festival cancellation
The Pride festival will return to Edmonton when organizers can restructure it to be more inclusive, a board member and spokesperson says.
