• Elise Stolte: New street festival aims to grow into all corners of Edmonton

There’s a strange request heading to city hall Tuesday.
Or at least is looks strange if all you read is a city report recommending council approve spending $58,000 to shut Jasper Avenue to vehicles for one Sunday in August.
Is it those crazy cyclists and a “war on cars” again? No. Far from it. Think of this as a neighbourhood-wide block party and local business booster. It’s a pilot project that could spread across the city to be so much more.

  • Watch: Leon Draisaitl cool as a cucumber as he approaches fifty goals

Edmonton Oilers’ forward Leon Draisaitl was typically reserved after practice, saying that while fifty goals would be a record to celebrate, he wasn’t pushing himself too hard to make it happen. Rather, he’s going to lace up against the Calgary Flames on Saturday as he would any other regular season game, hoping that good play and good teammates will get him, his stick and thus the puck just to where they need to go.

  • Canines clean up well with mudroom dog washes

Mudrooms, it seems, are going to the dogs. But in a good way.
They’re no longer just for dumping coats, wet or dirty footwear, or hockey gear. Today’s newest versions are getting a makeover tailored to keeping our four-legged friends clean with dog wash stations now front and centre.
A number of Edmonton-area home builders are adding these mutt-friendly mudrooms as an option on new builds and previewing them in their show homes. Others have already built some for their clients and th

  • The Candidate tickles the audience with political mayhem and dirty habits

Live theatre is meant to trigger conversation among audience members. What did you think? How did it make you feel? Where is the cheapest parking? Edmontonians have come to enjoy all those queries while experiencing an evening at the Citadel.
But after attending both plays in the farcical diptych currently on stage at The Citadel complex — The Party and The Candidate — I was left with one overwhelming question. What is the business model for this madcap approach?

A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Friday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -2 C with 11 km/h winds out of the southeast contributing to a -5 wind chill.
Ya it’s Friday with a high of 9 C and of course a mix of sun and clouds. Well for some people that means no work on the weekend. For some it means maybe heading out to a lake, seeing a movie, seeing friends at a movie.
So whatever the weekend means to you do it wel
  • Friday's letters: Endlessly rebuilding Oilers should look to Vegas

The Oilers have done it again — missed the playoffs, and that will continue until we get a number 1 goaltender. Need proof? Look no further than the Las Vegas Golden Knights; two years ago they had no superstars, only journeymen, except one, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, and they went on to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
They have done it again this year, albeit with a few stars. So Bob Nicholson should appoint Keith Gretzky as GM and let him find a number 1 goaltender and a couple journeymen f

  • Omar Khadr is a free man. Does the U.S. care?

For nearly seven years, Canadian court rulings over the fate of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr have prompted speculation over what, if anything, the latest legal wrangling means for relations between Canada and the U.S.
An Edmonton court ruling last week is proving no different.

  • David Staples: Trudeau ban on tanking Alberta crude is 'unCanadian,' former Liberal MP says

The Trudeau Liberals are now proceeding with their pipeline-killing, economy-crushing recipe to landlock future Alberta oilsands development.
Maybe they will wake up to the harm that they’re now engaged in. Fortunately, it’s still not too late on a few key files, including Bill C-48, the proposed tanker ban of Alberta crude oil on the northwest B.C coast.

    Sharks 3, Oilers 2
Some drama to the very last of Edmonton Oilers’ 41st and final home game of the season, but the outcome was all too familiar for the home faithful as the Oil fell 3-2 in regulation to San Jose Sharks.
This was the Leon Draisaitl Show, as the Oilers’ young scoring star sniped his 48th and 49th goals of the season and came oh-so-close to #50. Alas, despite several good looks down the stretch Leon was unable to light the lamp again for what would have been the ultimat

  • Elise Stolte: No clear debate winner as long-shot parties fail to score points needed

Thursday night’s party leaders’ forum was a good debate but not one I see shifting the course of this election as dramatically as the 2015 debate did.
Here’s my quick take: there was no clear winner. With a so-far polarized campaign between the NDP and the UCP, this was the chance for the Alberta Liberal leader or the Alberta Party leader to steal the show. Here’s how I think each leader did.

Mandel needed a big win. He needed to channe

  • Keith Gerein: Leaders' debate a good show, but offered little help to undecided voters

There were engaging discussions on health care and pipelines, pointed exchanges on social issues, a couple of zingers and even a surprise suggestion of marijuana smoking.
Thursday night’s Alberta election debate was a lively affair at times, featuring four well-prepared, intelligent party leaders.
But it’s hard to see it as a decisive event, with no one delivering that much sought-after but incredibly rare “knockout blow.”
Of course that won’t stop claims of victory
