UCP Leader Jason Kenney is standing by candidate Mark Smith, who faced intense backlash after comments surfaced where he said media portrayals of LGBTQ relationships as “good love” are problematic.
“Mr. Smith has apologized for his remarks … unequivocally,” said Kenney at a Wednesday news conference in Edmonton.
“(The comments) were hurtful, they were offensive, I condemn those remarks that he made before his election to the legislature.

An Edmonton man is facing a terrorism hoax charge after the Alberta RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) was alerted to a letter threatening Canadian and U.S. citizens, including his wife.
The INSET team responded March 26 after the letter indicating that a man was planning acts of terrorism against citizens in both countries was received by the U.S. Consulate in Calgary, said RCMP in a Wednesday release.
Investigators eventually determined that the suspect had drafted -

Fighting fake news: How Elections Alberta is guarding against misinformation
It’s often designed to make you angry.
So angry that you don’t question who or what it came from, or if it’s true.
Online misinformation comes in many forms: it can take the shape of a tweet, a comment, an ad or even look like a news story. The commonality is that the information presented is false, and meant to inflame the people who encounter it.
As Albertans prepare to go to the polls April 16, political parties and voters alike have taken to social media to share informatio -

Oilers in 60: Another year, another season down the drain
“I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed.”
Typically these are words employed by scolding parents while disciplining their children but it’s an all-too-familiar feeling here in Oil Country.
For the 12th time in 13 seasons, the Edmonton Oilers have failed to clinch a spot in the NHL’s postseason. They’ve (mis)managed this despite having the best player in the world in Connor McDavid, and one of the league’s emerging top stars in Leon Draisaitl. Sure, c -

Edmonton weather: Make up your mind, weather gods. I'm trying to build a fence.
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Wednesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -0.4 C with 3 km/h winds of the east contributing to a -1 wind chill.
So today is going to be great. Tomorrow, not so much. But focusing on today for a second we can expect sunshine and double-digit temperatures reaching 11 C — that’s good yard-working weather if you ask me. But that all changes, and quickly, as tomorrow is shaping -
Wednesday's letters: River-valley spot too fragile for campground
Re. “Kenney vows to create a new provincial park,” March 18Athough I oppose the Epcor solar farm as a regressive move to re-industrialize the river valley, I am not over the moon with Jason Kenney’s new plan for “conservation” of the river valley. He wants to make the Woodbend-Big Island Natural Area into a provincial park with a campground and tourism opportunities.
This area was envisioned as becoming public land with opportunities for nature study, hiking, biking -
Opinion: Education needs investment, not cutbacks
With the recent call of the Alberta election, all parties have — by this point — shared their education promises.
As president of the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA), I am writing to Albertans today to ask them to read carefully through each political education platform, and to think very hard about the future we want for this province’s next generation.
Yes, the economy is important because a strong economy means we have money to spend on education; however, it also w -

Hockey Hall of Fame writer Jim Matheson talks to host Craig Ellingson about the Edmonton Oilers’ search for a new general manager and perhaps a new president of hockey operations, too.

Elise Stolte: 'Homeless ICU' could solve the revolving door in Alberta's emergency rooms
Chest pain, abdominal pain — Dr. Louis Francescutti says he often has people coming off the street fabricating complaints just because they need a warm place to rest.
They know the drill, said the emergency room doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. If they say “chest pain,” they can count on roughly six hours of peace and quiet in a warm facility waiting for tests to come back negative. Some individuals literally show up hundreds of times in a year, he said, sometimes becaus -
David Staples: 'My plea to public sector: debt is not your friend, it's your enemy:' Kenney
Jason Kenney’s pitch to Alberta’s teachers, health-care workers and civil servants? There’s nothing worse for the public service than reckless deficit spending and a mountain of government debt.
“This is my plea to people in the public sector: debt is not your friend, it’s your enemy,” Kenney said. “Debt gnaws away at public services. The first person a government has to pay every year is the bankers. It’s not negotiable. And it goes from being a l -

Player grades: despondent Oilers + desperate Avs = desultory hockey game
Oilers 2, Avalanche 6
There was an air of inevitablilty to a hockey game in which one team was hugely incentivized, the other side not so much. The team needing the two points, Colorado Avalanche, had a bit of an early blip but took complete control in the final two periods to roll to a 6-2 win. Their dispirited opponents, Edmonton Oilers, are a team in the National Hockey League.

City crew installing crosswalk near west Edmonton bus crash site
A marked crosswalk is being installed this week near the site where two 13-year-olds were struck by a school bus in early March.
Signs were put up at the location Tuesday and the lines will be painted on the roadway Wednesday, the city said.

Councillor pitches selling city-owned suburban land
A city councillor wants to sell some of the city’s undeveloped, suburban land and put the money into development of Edmonton’s core.
City council voted Tuesday to press “pause” on its own greenfield residential development work —with the exception of two projects in Laurel in the southeast — until a report comes back from administration with advice on the feasability of changing how the city owns and manages development land.

Political left vs. right 'all hooey': Alberta Independence Party
Alberta Independence Party Leader Dave Bjorkman believes his party is the “true centre” of Alberta politics.
The notion of left and right?
“That’s all hooey,” Bjorkman told Postmedia Tuesday.
As far as he’s concerned, Alberta’s financial woes can only be fixed through separation.
“If there was another way, I would do it. I didn’t come up with this to be some radical — it’s because Canada pushed us out. The system’s broken,&r -
Election notebook: Latest poll, meeting the NDP and climate chatter
A new poll released Tuesday indicates the UCP has a sizeable lead over the NDP, but voters are tied on who would make the best premier.
Vancouver-based Research Co. conducted the online poll among 600 Albertans from March 29 to April 1.
Of decided voters, the poll found 45 per cent would cast a ballot for the UCP and 40 per cent for the NDP. The Alberta Party came in at six per cent and the Liberal Party with three per cent.
