Game Day 80: Oilers at Avalanche
OK Ken Hitchcock, I’ve been following the plot as best I can throughout another icy, dicey winter in Edmonton. But this time you’ve lost me.
Brodziak & Khaira injured and won’t play.Koskinen starts at Colorado. One game-time decision on defence, with Gravel perhaps drawing into lineup.

Crosswalk to be installed near bus crash site
A marked crosswalk will be installed this week near the site where two 13-year-olds were struck by a school bus in early March.
City spokesman Gary Dyck confirmed Tuesday that a crosswalk will be painted on Hemingway Road, but the exact intersection wasn’t immediately available. He said a flashing beacon will also be installed at the crossing, likely in June.
On Monday, Edmonton police laid a careless driving charge against the driver of the school bus that hit the two teenage girls at abo -
Opinion: Diversifying Alberta's economy must further boost film, TV and interactive
When Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel announced his party would provide the best tax incentives for film and television productions in Canada last week, heads turned not only in the industry, but in the arts in general.
Wait — had a would-be Alberta premier just led with boldly standing up for the arts first thing in the morning, risking coffee sputtered from Lethbridge to High Level? Does he even know where we live?
And yet surrounded by lights and cameras at Calgary’s Palliser h -
10 things to do in Edmonton this week: Coyote Comedy, Martha Masters, and the Orchid Fair
Coyote Comedy, Thursday nights at the Grindstone Theatre.
Coyote Comedy
Lately we’ve been hammering at the delights to be found at the Grindstone Theatre, and for good reason. They’ve jammed almost every evening with shows that really need checking out, including Thursdays, when Coyote Comedy takes the stage for 50 minutes worth of loose-limbed, hilarious improv. Featuring such veteran local talents as Neil Grahn, Leona Brausen, Cathleen Rootsaert, and Peter Brown.

Edmonton couple charged with stealing $774,450 worth of chemical from oil company
An Edmonton couple is facing fraud and theft charges after more than 6,000 pounds of an “oil and gas conversion chemical” valued at $774,400 was allegedly stolen from a local business, say police.
An area oil and gas company reported a suspected theft of the chemical in November 2017 after an internal audit found a discrepancy in inventory, Edmonton police spokeswoman Carolin Maran said in a news release Tuesday morning.
The business estimates more than 6,000 pounds of the chemical h -
Watch: Cannabis connoisseur paid to smoke pot
Edmonton resident Amanda Bladon is one of eight Canadians, selected out of 25,000 applicants, to be a paid cannabis connoisseur hired to evaluate different strains of cannabis for variety packs.
“I’m kind of in dream job land right now,” Amanda Bladon said Monday, her first day of a yearlong contract as a cannabis connoisseur. “I just thought the opportunity sounded a little bit too good to be true and I’m a bit of a risk-taker so I figured why not throw my name in -
"Have a laugh and be entertained": Edmonton Opera presents Rossini's Count Ory
For many opera lovers, the name Rossini is synonymous with his comic opera The Barber of Seville. Some will also know such comedies as the Italian Girl in Algiers, and a couple of years ago Edmonton Opera gave us a scintillating production of his sparkling Cinderella opera, La Cenerentola.
Few, though, will be familiar with Rossini’s last comedy, Count Ory, which Edmonton Opera are presenting on Saturday, April 6, with further performances the following Tuesday and Friday. Indeed, this wil -

Skinnamarink sing-along: Sharon & Bram share child-friendly favourites on farewell tour
You knew it was coming, but it’s perhaps a bad year for Sharon & Bram to retire from the road.
Since forming in 1978 the revered children’s entertainers (known as Sharon, Lois & Bram until third member Lois Lilienstein opted out in 2000, passing away in 2015) have left their mark on successive generations with songs like Peanut Butter, I Am Slowly Going Crazy, One Elephant, and the wildly popular Skinnamarink.
More importantly, along with fellow performers like Raffi and Fred -
Harsh or humorous, The LYNNeS aren't afraid to tell it like it is
Who knew heartbreak could be so much fun?
That would be the Ottawa duo The LYNNeS, Lynn Miles and Lynne Hanson, whose debut disc Heartbreak Song For The Radio garnered five Canadian Folk Music Award nominations.
With acclaimed solo careers on both sides, the collaboration developed gradually after they met in 2005, with Miles sitting in as a backing singer, then an album producer, and finally a co-writer on several of Hanson’s projects. Performing together just over a year now, they co-wro -

Zombies and Slayers and Mansons, oh my! CHOAS AB fest hits Kinsmen Park July 26-27
Now here’s a festival that understands what Edmonton’s hardcore headbangers are thirsty for: blood. As in “raining blood.” As in Slayer’s last Alberta show ever.
Live Nation Tuesday morning announced its brand-new festival, CHAOS AB, taking place in Kinsmen Park on Friday July 28 and Saturday July 27.
Headliners include Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed and of course 38-year-old Slayer, screaming this is the end. Other acts include Headstones and GWAR —&nb -
They're not just different, they're miles apart. Here's how the NDP and UCP platforms compare.
The platforms of Alberta’s two major political parties are poles apart, with the NDP branding itself as the choice for continued investment in public services while the UCP hammers down on its promise of new jobs.
Over the weekend, both NDP Leader Rachel Notley and UCP Leader Jason Kenney released their plans for the province. Even physically, the documents veered in opposite directions.

Opinion: A reality check on Alberta's job numbers
In the run-up to Alberta’s election on April 16, there has been a renewed interest in openly evaluating the labour-market performance of the current government. Each political party has recently provided a very different assessment. A week ago, the NDP had claimed that it created roughly 80,000 jobs, while the UCP had claimed that the NDP lost roughly 48,000 jobs.
What is meant by jobs being created or lost?
Basically, these numbers reflect changes to the employment level of the province a -

Edmonton weather: It's a Tuesday in April, so don't get too excited
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Tuesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -0.1 C with 9 km/h winds of the west, northwest contributing to a -3 wind chill.
So we’re kind of all over the place this week. Each day on the calendar seemingly brings with it a different forecast. From a chance of snow this morning, to sunshine and 11 C Wednesday and then back down to single digits Thursday, to cloudy Friday and a chance -
Tuesday's letters: Crack down on election signs
Are the candidates and volunteers of political parties participating in the upcoming election aware of bylaws governing the placement of election signs?
They must be three metres from curbs, can’t be placed on centre medians, and can’t be placed on pork-chop islands. If you pull up your vehicle onto boulevards in March or April, your tires will leaves ruts so deep that repairs will be necessary.
Why doesn’t the City of Edmonton enforce their bylaws and remove illegally placed s -
Editorial: Act fast on canola
China’s decision to ban canola imports from Canada is such a dire threat to Western Canada’s economy that even the federal government, still embroiled in the SNC-Lavalin affair, has taken notice.
It’s not hyperbole to suggest that even without a scandal to preoccupy Ottawa, the region’s economic concerns usually take a back seat to issues that matter to vote-rich Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. But this Western Canadian crisis is too big to ignore.

Keith Gerein: Avoid getting caught in numbers game when evaluating NDP, UCP platforms
The UCP’s election platform book is 117 pages long, while the NDP’s election platform book is 44 pages long.
These are important numbers, not because they indicate anything about the quality of the respective platforms, but because they can be easily counted and classified as verified, irrefutable facts.
As for most other numbers printed in the policy books — and there are an awful lot of them — it’s much more difficult for Albertans to distinguish fact from conject -
Player grades: McDavid frustrated as Oilers lose, lose, lose: "It sucks obviously."
The Edmonton Oilers were crippled by horrendous signings and trades this year, but nonetheless made it somewhat interesting, hanging in the playoff race until Monday night, April 1, 2019.

The Oilers were officially eliminated when Colorado went into overtime and earned a loser point against St. Louis on Monday evening.

In every province and territory where workers can bank overtime, employers are required to pay out those hours at 1.5 times th -
