    Edmonton firefighters were at the Strathcona Hotel Saturday morning extinguishing hotspots after a Friday night blaze in the attic of the iconic property.
    At 9 a.m. Saturday, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokeswoman Kristi Bland said firefighters had yet to declare the fire extinguished. The blaze was first reported at 9:30 p.m. Friday, and was under control by 2 a.m. Saturday, Bland said.

  • Firefighters battle blaze at Strathcona Hotel

    Emergency crews were on scene Friday night tackling a fire at the Strathcona Hotel in Old Strathcona.
    Edmonton firefighters dealt with the flames as police diverted pedestrian and vehicle traffic on Whyte Avenue, while dozens of onlookers watched.
    Whyte Avenue was  closed to traffic between 104 and 102 street.

  • Mounties investigating death in Red Deer

    RCMP Major Crimes Unit are investigating after a man died in Red Deer’s Mountainview area.
    Police and EMS arrived at a residence in the neighborhood shortly after midnight on March 28, where they located a male with serious injuries, RCMP said in a Friday news release.
    The victim was taken to hospital where he later died.
    RCMP Major Crimes Unit North have seen taken over the investigation. Red Deer RCMP and forensic sciences are assisting on the case.

  • Police confirm shelter stabbing death as a homicide

    A Friday autopsy confirmed a death outside an inner-city day shelter on Thursday is a homicide.
    Police responded to reports of a stabbing at approximately 7:15 a.m. outside the George Spady Centre on 105 Avenue. They transported a 48-year-old woman to hospital with a stab wound where she later died, according to a news release on Friday.

    Alberta political leaders will be facing off in a much-anticipated debate next Thursday.
    A media consortium — including Postmedia, CBC, CityNews and CTV — scheduled the leaders debate April 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
