If elected, the Alberta Party would amend the province’s building code to allow for taller timber buildings as well as create a research institute, leader Stephen Mandel announced Friday morning.
The current height restriction for wood-framed buildings is six storeys under the Alberta Building Code, and Mandel said the province is falling behind other jurisdictions. A timber tower in B.C. constructed in 2017 stands 18-storeys tall.

Watch: Ken Hitchcock hopes for a future helping the Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton Oilers head coach Ken Hitchcock, speaking with reporters outside of an optional skate at Rogers Place Friday, spoke about being in a unique situation where coaches were in limbo given the ongoing changes in the team’s organization. Hitchcock said even if he doesn’t end up as head coach for 2019-20, he’d like to find a place in the organization where he can bring his talents to bear, talents that have helped him in his fruitful career in the National Hockey League.

Sexual misconduct allegations against two NDP MLAs were investigated by Toronto, Edmonton firms, says party
The NDP says the allegations of sexual misconduct levied against two MLAs were investigated by two independent lawyers based in Edmonton and Toronto.
“The people caucus engaged with were Janice Rubin of Rubin Thomlinson in Toronto and Ayla Akgungor of Field Law in Edmonton,” said NDP spokesperson Cheryl Oates in a statement Friday. “Both issued reports and we followed through on all of their recommendations.”
In November, the premier’s office said two sitting NDP ML -
Sister questions violent arrest of brother captured on video
The sister of a man now facing a charge of assaulting a peace officer is questioning the violent arrest caught on video.
Monica Biar held a news conference Friday about the arrest of her 24-year-old brother outside their family’s apartment March 25. Video of the arrest was posted by the family on social media this week, showing a police officer on top of the struggling man.
In the video, the officer orders him to get on his stomach. While the man shows the officer his hands are up, h -
NDP promises to reduce prescription cost burden on seniors if elected
Rachel Notley pledged that a re-elected NDP government would cover the prescription costs for the majority of Alberta seniors.
The move, which would cover prescription co-payments for seniors with incomes less than $75,000 per year, would cost the province about $110 million per year.
“Right now there are seniors in Alberta who are actually forced to choose between filling their prescriptions or filling their fridges,” said Notley at a Sherwood Park news conference Friday. “Tha -
STARS receives $65 million from feds to replace five aging helicopters
Brian Smith credits STARS Air Ambulance with saving his life after a skydiving accident over a decade ago.
For his 50th birthday fourteen years ago, Smith checked skydiving off his bucket list at a facility in Westlock. The thrill of the dive had Smith booking another opportunity to jump during the July long weekend.
This time, however, there was trouble with his parachute coming down. He hit the ground between 30 and 40 kilometres an hour.

2019 city census gets underway, gender inclusive options added
The 2019 city census will have a gender inclusive question for the first time.
On Monday, the city will mail out unique pin codes to every household that will allow residents to log on to a computer, smartphone or other device and fill out the three-question census online.
“Please skip the door knock. Do it online. It’s going to save you from someone knocking on your door at supper time,” said the city’s director of elections and census Iain MacLean at a press conference -
Rush to the racetrack: Century Mile Racetrack and Casino at EIA opens Monday
Brace for heavy traffic Monday around the Edmonton International Airport (EIA) as Century Mile Racetrack and Casino opens.
The public can visit the new entertainment facility starting 9:30 a.m. Monday. Air travellers are warned to budget for extra travel time to get to the airport without delay.
Increased traffic around the racetrack casino may be initially high, warns the EIA, but peak crowds are eventually expected to visit during non-peak airport hours.
The EIA is also offering tips to make t -
Health officials close 'unsanitary' home-based Edmonton tattoo shop

James bluesy incarnation reveals a solid rocker underneath
Has it been a while since you’ve seen Colin James on stage?
You might wonder exactly what sort of musical being he’s become, given that the man’s career has gone through a couple of incarnations since his swinging Little Big Band, moving in and out of rock, and lately delving more deliberately into the blues.
After pulling off two excellent albums that saw him return to his blues roots and to classic blues covers — 2016’s Blue Highways and last year’s recent J -

Edmonton weather: Mercifully, second winter has been cancelled
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Friday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -0.1 C with 7 km/h winds of the north contributing to a -3 wind chill.
It’s amazing how much can change in 24 hours. If you were to read the Environment Canada forecast yesterday you would have seen three days of snowfall— a 60 per cent likelihood to boot—ready to descend upon the city starting next week. Now, poof! Like a magici -
Ted Morton: Kenney's equalization referendum could help end unfair policy
Jason Kenney and the UCP have committed to hold a referendum to abolish or revise the federal equalization program. On Wednesday, Professors Oliver Franke and Elizabeth Smythe wrote an op-ed for the Edmonton Journal that characterized Kenney’s referendum promise as a cheap political trick “to mobilize the party’s base, misinform Albertans and stoke their hostility towards the federal government.”
While technically correct in some of their assertions, Franke and Smythe com -
Friday's letters: Questions remain in Khadr saga
Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Mary Moreau declared Omar Khadr’s Guantanamo sentence over. It has been a long 17 years of injustice, since his capture in 2002, at age 15.
And while the rule of law has prevailed since his arrival in Canada, the question must still be asked if justice has been served.
Khadr was charged, convicted and sentenced by a discredited military commission sometimes referred to as a “pantomime of justice,” a “kangaroo court.&rdquo -
Player grades: Edmonton Oilers carry the play vs. Dallas but are left seeing Stars
Stars 3*, Oilers 2 (SO)
Insert bitter joke <here> about Edmonton Oilers marking Fan Appreciation Night with another home loss, but in truth the local side deserved a better fate. They dominated Dallas Stars for two periods but couldn’t buy a break, or a call, and couldn’t maintain any separation on the visitors. Before you knew it a deserved 2-0 lead had diminished to 2-1, then disappeared altogether. Eventually the game was decided in the shootout, where the Oilers surged to a -
Keith Gerein: Despite calmer language, Kenney still behind the times on supervised drug consumption sites
Albertans who operate the province’s seven supervised drug consumption sites were probably unsure how to feel Thursday after UCP Leader Jason Kenney was done announcing his party’s plans to deal with the opioid crisis.
I’ll admit I was, too.
Relief was one emotion, considering Kenney avoided a repeat of some of his past inflammatory rhetoric.

Elise Stolte: Five years after TRC hearings there's hope on the journey
There were almost more women in a hijab than a ribbon skirt among the teepees of Bent Arrow’s National Aboriginal Day celebrations last year.
It’s a sign of progress, of bridging and respect between cultures, and there’s more good news coming from the non-profit that works with local Indigenous families in Edmonton’s Parkdale neighbourhood.
Five years since the Truth and Reconciliation hearings in Edmonton, executive director Cheryl Whiskeyjack says that in addition to th -
David Staples: NDP policy means businesses don't see Alberta as place of the future, Mandel says
He’s the same old Stephen Mandel, in other words the sharpest, funniest, most plain-spoken politician I’ve ever met.
But now Mandel is in tough. He’s leading an Alberta Party in a provincial election where opposing leaders Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley get almost all the attention.
That doesn’t mean, however, that Mandel and his centrist party can’t steal a few seats. It certainly doesn’t mean Mandel doesn’t have important things to say on the economy. -

Alberta election notebook: Notley wears blue, smaller party promises, UCP ad and Calgary campaigning
A former staffer for UCP Leader Jason Kenney made waves on Twitter Thursday when he honed in on NDP Leader Rachel Notley’s wardrobe choices.
“Here’s the NDP Leader wearing blue in 2019. In 2015, lots of neutral colours. It’s subtle but telling. NDP brand is absolutely radioactive in Alberta. They’re essentially running against their own party, and trying to earn subliminal associations with conservative blue,” tweeted Blaise Boehmer.
