A 25-year-old man has been charged in a fatal stabbing Friday evening in southeast Edmonton after turning himself into police Sunday.
Police responded to Lakewood Village in the city’s Kameyosek neighbourhood around 8:25 p.m. Friday for reports of a stabbing.
Officers located a distressed 35-year-old man inside a home who was transported to hospital and died from his injuries shortly after.
An autopsy Monday morning confirmed the man died from a stab wound and the stabbing is the city&rsqu

No trains to NAIT station during spring LRT maintenance; Central station to temporarily close
The city is planning spring and summer work on the LRT system that will include at least one temporary station closure, and replacement bus service to NAIT station.
City spokesman Rowan Anderson said Monday that stopping Metro Line LRT service at the Kingsway station is a “byproduct” of some of the work being done on the Capital Line.
He said the work on the Capital Line will reduce LRT frequency “a little bit”, and so to make up lost capacity while that project is happen -
Watch: Judge rules to end Khadr's remaining sentence
Omar Khadr is free after a judge ruled to effectively end his eight-year sentence for the killing of a U.S. soldier.
Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench Chief Justice Mary Moreau made the ruling Monday morning in Edmonton. Khadr was seeking the three and a half years remaining on his 2010 youth sentence to be reduced to one day as he awaits a decision in his U.S. appeal.

Not just Italians: Talking with your hands more about storytelling style, say U of A researchers
Gesturing as you talk has more to do with storytelling style than nationality, say University of Alberta researchers.
“We wondered if how frequently people gesture isn’t determined so much by their culture alone, but rather by what they are saying when they are speaking,” Elena Nicoladis, lead author and psychology professor in the Faculty of Science, said in a Monday release.
“So we designed a study to look at the differences in how people present a story, and how that a -
Toronto punkers PUP play in the dark with third record, Morbid Stuff
On the title track of PUP’s third record, Morbid Stuff, singer Stefan Babcock seems to be working through some, well … morbid stuff.
Powered by a pounding beat, thrashing guitars and an impossibly catchy chorus, the song begins with our foul-mouthed and bored protagonist “stuck on death and dying and obsessive thoughts that won’t let up. It makes me feel like I’m about to throw up.”
Things don’t get much sunnier as the album progresses to numbers such a -

Edmonton weather: Let's reflect on the continued melt
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Monday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured 0 C with 20 km/h winds coming out of the south southeast.
Today looks to be just another day where we get a little bit of wind, a little bit of clouds and then tomorrow will happen. The high today is 7 C, the low is -3 C with a wind chill overnight making it feel like -5. A slight chance of flurries tonight with a chance of rain tomorrow. Wow, rai -
'There’s nothing else like it' El Mirador building with unique design, at risk
The El Mirador apartment building has been an oddball on Edmonton’s architectural scene since it went up decades ago on 108 Street, just north of Jasper Avenue.
Built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style in 1935, with a matching annex added in 1953, the white stucco facade and red tile roof are a local rarity.
But today, with the aging El Mirador at risk of being swept away as part of a larger two-tower redevelopment project, there’s an evolving discussion about how its architecture -
Kenney says UCP would create Alberta Parole Board, cut ties with Parole Board of Canada
United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney has pledged to create a provincial parole board if his party is elected — claiming prisoners released by federal parole authorities are playing a role in the province’s rural crime problem.

While Quebec and Ontario have their own parole boards, Alb -
'It means there's going to be a lot less money for raising a family': Alberta farmers react to China canola seed ban
A halt by China on the purchase of Canadian canola seed has left Alberta farmers frustrated, out of money and looking for answers.
Scott Keller and his family have been farming canola on their midsize farm near New Norway since the 1990s. He said he’s out $40,000 as prices dropped by close to 30 cents per bushel last Friday following the announcement of the ban by China.
“It means there’s going to be a lot less money for raising a family. It really hurts,” said Keller.

Elise Stolte: No Blatchford or skyscraper, the humble Muttart project shows a path to a stronger Edmonton
Without an eye-catching tower, the new Muttart Lands redevelopment near the Stadium LRT Station could easily slip under the radar.
But towers are overrated, in my books. This promises something better, something still rare in Edmonton — mid-level density that’s affordable, walkable, urban and quiet. It will fill in a vacant site, give east Jasper Avenue residents walking access to Commonwealth Recreation Centre, and create 1,000 new units right on an existing LRT line.

'Sky-high costs': Notley hints major announcement on child care at Edmonton rally
NDP Leader Rachel Notley hinted that she will make a major announcement on child care Monday, following a week of energetic campaigning that saw party leaders travel across Alberta and roll out various platform promises.
“Too many young families face sky-high costs for child care,” Notley said at a rally Sunday in Edmonton. “Those costs can rival mortgage payments and rent, and they stand as a major barrier to people who are buying their first home.”
