City police have issued a warning to the public after receiving a number of reported jewelry thefts targeting seniors in the west end last week.
“Police are also warning the public, in particular seniors, to be aware of their surroundings when in parking lots and to be extra vigilant if approached by strangers who are trying to give away or sell something,” EPS spokesperson Carolin Maran said in a news release Friday.
Police said an 86-year-old woman was approached by a man and woman

Kenney proposes creating $13-per-hour young worker wage as part of UCP election platform
If elected, the UCP plans to roll out a $13-per-hour minimum wage for young workers, $2 less than the minimum wage that took effect in October.
The lesser wage would apply to people 17 years of age and under.
“The majority of people who receive the minimum wage are dependents or in households with other sources of income,” said UCP Leader Jason Kenney at a Friday news conference held at Vienna Bakery, an Edmonton business. “We’re basically talking about teenagers with ent -

Lang was released on conditions of having limited to no contact with anyone under the age of 18, said a RCMP news release on Friday. Lang is not allowed to possess a device with int -

“Today I informed the Board of Governors that I will not be seeking reappointment as president of the University of Alberta when my term ends on June 30, 2020. I am announcing this now to allow the Board sufficient time to search for my successor,” he wrote.

Cappies reviews: The Beverly Hillbillies
By Kaden Fraser
Millwoods Christian School
Rock-slinging cousins, a pretentious posse of students and a timeless theme song. All of these were a part of the happy-go-lucky hodgepodge of swingin’ 60s folk comedy that was Blessed Oscar Romero High School’s production of The Beverly Hillbillies.
Adapted from the American sitcom which ran from 1962 to 1971, The Beverly Hillbillies centres around Jed Clampett, a simple widowed mountaineer, and the Clampett Family, living in the rural Ozar -

Player grades, Games 61-70: Edmonton Oilers picked up their play but playoff berth remains a pipe dream
For some weeks now I’ve been hanging on to the “faint hope” version of the Edmonton Oilers’ playoff chances. The club’s previously-demonstrated capacity to put together decent strings combined with the lacklustre showing by their rivals in the Western Conference wild card race left the window open a crack. I thought (and think) the Oilers were correct in not shipping out players for picks at the deadline, even as I also thought it correct that they not sell the farm -

'Albertans stand with you': Increased police presence at Edmonton mosques after Christchurch attacks
City police are increasing their presence around Edmonton mosques after 49 people were gunned down during prayers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Faisal Suri, president of the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council, said there was no imminent Edmonton threat but police increased their presence as a proactive measure.
“People feel generally safe in Edmonton but they are more concerned than ever,” said Suri. “There is generally fear in the back of their minds going to -

Tantalizing trio: Full House Lottery 2019 features three iconic homes in southwest Edmonton
They don’t make it easy.
With builders Averton Homes, Kondro Homes and Parkwood Master Builder unveiling three new, dramatic Full House Lottery 2019 dream homes there are options if iconic houses are what you’re looking for.
But which door is the right one for you? That’s a good question, as not only does each front door at the Creekwood Collections at Chappelle in southwest Edmonton lead you into a feast for the eyes, each home also stands on its own, making the choice even mo -
Opinion: Another pipeline delay no cause for continuing curtailment
The year-long delay of the Enbridge pipeline reconstruction will understandably cause frustration for Alberta, a province that was already in need of more pipeline capacity. But the provincial government should avoid the temptation to build on its curtailment policy and introduce more stringent production quotas.
Quotas are ill-suited to managing this challenge or the broader issue of transportation bottlenecks faced by the Canadian oil and gas industry.
Alberta’s problems began long ago: -
Full House Lottery's richest early bird includes Windermere condo
You could call it the Full House Lottery’s signature statement.
The lottery’s richest early bird prize yet, valued at $846,000, includes a 1,500-square-foot luxury condo in southwest Edmonton.
The uniquely shaped triangular condo at The Signature Tower in Windermere is a two-bedroom plus den unit with the open-concept kitchen and living room providing a 240-degree floor-to-ceiling panorama. While both bedrooms have their own balcony, a private fob allows the elevator to take you righ -
Faulkner Real Estate Report: Positive cash flow properties exist, but require some searching
Is now the time to find and purchase investment properties that will provide a positive cash flow? On the surface you would think not.
In the last two or three years we have seen interest rates increase and rental incomes decline. This makes it much more difficult to find income properties that actually produce a positive cash flow.
However, let’s dig a little deeper. Successful investors rarely purchase for the short term, they’re in it for the long haul (10-20 years or more). Real -
Growing Things: Maintain moisture to prevent spruce tree needle loss
Q: I was hoping you could help me. I have a row of spruce trees which are about 40 years old, and I would guess over 50 feet tall. I planted them when they were about a foot tall. I realize it is normal for them to lose needles in the interior of the tree, but over the last few years there has been an excessive amount of needle loss. In Strathcona County I have noticed this happening to other spruce trees, resulting in them dying, and I am very concerned that this will happen to mine. Can you of -
House-flipping Wilsons return to headline 2019 Edmonton Home + Garden Show
They’re about to put down their tool belts.
The Canadian-born duo of Kortney and Dave Wilson — now based in Nashville, and previously known for picking up microphones — aren’t exactly leaving the building industry. But they are quite possibly saying goodbye to their successful home renovation television series, Masters of Flip, after the upcoming fourth season.
“Oh yes, it’s at least the last season for now,” said Kortney, who along with her husband Dave -
Review: The Cat Empire takes the roof off Winspear with its tribal pop party
Straight off, any band which recognizes that ska is one of the greatest (often-forgotten) grooves in the history of popular dance music gets an extra star from this scribe. But the love of ska turned out to be merely whipped cream on a sundae filled with Latin jazz, reggae, and touches of hip-hop for some 900 folks who turned out to catch Melbourne, Australia’s tribal pop party band The Cat Empire at the Winspear Centre Thursday.
In a land where we have long hoped for a real sniff of sprin -
Edmonton weather: Bit of snow this morning but still above zero
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Thursday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured 1.6 C with 9 km/h winds out of the west, northwest.
So there’s a sight chance we could see some snow today. Forecasters don’t seem overly confident, pinning the odds at 30 per cent for this morning before tapering off this afternoon. Temperatures are still above zero, though, and that should make for another decent day. Let the Great -
Opinion: Look for energy-industry solutions, not scapegoats
Energy markets are changing and so is our climate. These are not just facts, they are the lived experience of Albertans dealing with a downturn that feels different this time — and the fires, smoke and floods that have come to define our summers.
Nothing matters more right now than determining how to find a way for Albertans to thrive through this reality. However, the hard and honest conversations we need to have about our energy sector are being hijacked. Our future matters too much to l -
Friday's letters: Moving market detracts from downtown
Re. “City confirms downtown summer market will move,” March 13
The City Market is a major attraction and destination point for downtown and is an integral part of our vibrant downtown life. It has thrived at its present 104 Street location since 2004 despite inclement weather days and has continued to expand and enhance this area.
Why move it — especially to an indoor location? An indoor location would do nothing to enhance vibrancy downtown.

Keith Gerein: Heads should roll at Alberta Environment over misguided Domtar land strategy
Incorrect and unreasonable.
The phrase appears 17 times in a new Environmental Appeals Board ruling, describing the behaviour of the provincial government to stymie a housing development on the former Domtar industrial lands in northeast Edmonton.
If anything, the words are an understatement.
While professional in its language, the board’s report is scathing in the details, outlining an overzealous misuse of authority by Alberta Environment in pursuing a series of cleanup orders for the si -
Elise Stolte: Local gardeners create their own seed bank to guard Edmonton's food supply
Kelly Gilliam is a licensed private investigator. But any time she’s not digging into criminal investigations or workplace fraud, Gilliam is saving the world with dirt and a shovel — one rare, heritage and open-pollinated seed at a time.
Twelve years ago, the amateur gardener started a seed bank with 20 varieties stored in her fridge. Today, she has more than 400 seeds, including 300 varieties of tomato all adapted for local growing conditions. With a team of similar volunteers, they -
