Mayor Don Iveson recalls trying to drive through the Parkallen neighbourhood in July 2004 to check on his childhood home after torrential rain flooded city streets.
“I drove here as best as I could through the flooded streets and was able to get close enough to come in and see the neighbourhood on the day of that terrible storm and remember people, on the one hand, frolicking in their canoes and on the other hand, seeing cars floating down 113 Street,” Iveson said at Ellingson Park,

Infrastructure and Communities Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne announced more than $1 billion in federal funding for Valley Line West and Metro Line Northwest projects at Lewis Farm Transit Centre Monday in Edmonton. Notes from the Dome: A new provincial park, cheaper crop insurance and political fines
More than 166,000 hectares of boreal forest in northern Alberta has been officially designated a wildland provincial park. It will be called Kitaskino Nuwenëné Wildland.
The move stems from an agreement between Indigenous communities, energy companies and the federal government and follows one month of public consultations.
The idea was first proposed by Mikisew Cree First Nation.
It received strong support from Athabasca Chipewyan Cree First Nation, Fort McKay First Nation, Fort Chi -

'NDP waste': UCP would kill $590-million 'Superlab'
A planned $590-million Edmonton Laboratory Clinical Hub — dubbed the ‘Superlab’ — would be nixed under a UCP government, party leader Jason Kenney said Monday.
The UCP would also reverse a planned $50-million purchase of Dynalife labs, an Edmonton-based company with about 1,200 workers.
In May 2016, Health Minister Sarah Hoffman announced her government’s intention to consolidate lab testing for northern Alberta in one central facility. It would replace Dynalife&rsq -

Liquor licences for special events made easier: Province
It will be easier to pick up a liquor licence for a special event thanks to changes announced by the province on Monday.
The overhaul streamlines the application process, and simplifies food and security requirements.
The arm’s-length agency has removed sub-categories that limited applicants from obtaining a licence to sell liquor to the public, but requires at least one ProServe-certified server per 100 patrons.

'Kitty!': Athabasca RCMP reconnect missing stuffed animal with 18-month-old toddler
This is a story about a girl and her missing stuffed animal, and the dogged determination of Alberta RCMP officers who were desperate to see the two reunited.
It all started on March 4, when police were conducting a child seat check operation in Athabasca. It was a routine event for officers who were pulling over vehicles where child seats were present to ensure they were installed properly and safely.
After the operation wrapped up, two officers discovered a brightly-coloured stuffed animal in -
Edmonton weather: Let the great melt commence
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Monday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -6.7 C with 6 km/h winds out of the southwest contributing to a -10 wind chill.
Looks like it’s almost time to trade in those heavy, clunky winter boots for some rubber boots as above-zero temperatures all week will surely help melt some of all that extra snow we just got. It’ll most likely be a bit of a slow burn, however, as forecast -
Elise Stolte: How lowly Central McDougall is propping up the city budget
Anyone ticked at Edmonton’s rising property taxes should take a walk through Central McDougall with Michael Brown.
Brown is a local resident, young father and urban planner. He’s also a data nerd; he and a friend just mapped Edmonton’s entire residential and commercial land assessments to figure out which neighbourhoods are paying the most to keep this city running.
The answer is surprising. His north central neighbourhood of Central McDougall, a place more likely to be feature -
'Sharks are circling': On the streets with Edmonton’s human trafficking and exploitation unit
She’s wearing track pants and a bedazzled pink hoodie on a fall afternoon. She looks young. When she walks, she staggers slightly, twirling her blond hair and at times, pulling at the long strands and sticking them in the corner of her mouth, sucking on them.
Most of the usual crowd on 97 Street in the Alberta Avenue area barely acknowledge the woman on the corner.
But there are a few.
A voice comes over the secure police tactical channel: “The sharks are circling heavy.”

'Not like Pretty Woman': On the frontline of Edmonton's fight to break the chains of sexual exploitation, link by link
The 24 men gathered in a downtown office boardroom are deathly quiet.
Each was arrested weeks or months earlier for soliciting sex on Edmonton streets or in hotels. They’ve been there all day, unhappy students in the Sex Trade Offender Program (STOP), a class better known simply as “john school.”
A woman stands up in front of them, a survivor of sexual exploitation. The mood in the room goes from quiet to that of a funeral procession.
“Do you honestly think that a woman w -

Biggest sign of Edmonton Oilers incompetence? The numerous puck-moving d-men they've let slip away
Oilers essentially gave away top NHL puckmovers like Gustafsson, Petry and Schultz
It’s hard to pinpoint the single largest organizational flaw of the Edmonton Oilers during the Decade of Darkness-plus, but surely high on the list has been the team’s propensity to give up on puck-moving d-men when they still have plenty of miles left in their careers.
Year after year after year, the Oilers trade away or fail to bring back puckmovers, from elite ones to bottom-pairing ones.

Would-be Meadows UCP candidate disappointed by Rhodes appointment
A prospective UCP candidate says the appointment of Len Rhodes as the party’s candidate in the Edmonton-Meadows riding was a surprise.
Arundeep Singh Sandhu said he was told about the appointment the night before the public announcement.
“We were campaigning hard. All of our supporters were ready for the nomination vote, so there’s a lot of disappointment in the community and a lot of disappointment for me and my family,” Sandhu said.
