A correctional services peace officer died in hospital Thursday after suffering a medical episode while training at the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Training Academy in the southwest Edmonton.
The man has been identified by friends and fellow officers as Solomon Osagiede; some of them created a GoFundMe page that raised more than $18,000 Thursday night.
“Solomon was a loving spirit who brought warmth and comfort to any room he walked into,” page creator Robin Doad wrot

Wine column: Italy's Chianti region features formidable wines, fascinating history
Whether you are having pizza, pasta, or brushing snow off the grill for lamb, the first red wine pairings that come to mind are those from Italy’s Tuscany region of Chianti.
Wines labelled simply as Chianti are often synonymous with diluted, simple, fruity and boring. The higher quality wines are produced in a highly regulated and designated historic region, and will be labelled Chianti Classico (Normale), while the most recent top-tier category is Gran Selezione (just to confuse things on -
What binds these bands? Comparing Edmonton first-timers Postmodern Jukebox and longtimers Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lynyrd Skynyrd, performing at Rogers Place on Tuesday night.
In the next few days we’re going to be saying hello to Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, and goodbye to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Youtube sensations Postmodern Jukebox have never been to Edmonton, but that’s not surprising given that they’ve only somewhat recently started taking their show on the road. Social media made the collective, which revolves around pianist/arranger Scott Bradlee, and they’ve built a faith -
Dining Out: Gangnam Street Food satisfies Seoul food cravings
I’ve been fortunate enough to spend quite a bit of time in South Korea over the past few years, and often find myself missing its food when I’m home. Luckily, Edmonton has a growing number of Korean restaurants, bars and grocery stores, so finding those familiar flavours to satisfy my sudden cravings has been growing easier.
One of the newest spots in that growing group of restaurants is Gangnam Street Food, an homage to Korea’s street food culture. It’s located in the K- -

Oilers in 60: It's always a beautiful day when the Oilers win
Edmonton might be in the middle of a snowstorm Friday but that hasn’t done anything to dampen Oilers’ fans spirits.
Winning makes everything seem so much better. And the Edmonton Oilers are on a four-gaem winning streak now thanks to a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks last night at Rogers Place.
The Oilers got goals from Alex Chiasson, Zack Kassian, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with assists from—guess who?—Connor McDavid, who tallied his 60th and 61st apple of the season.

Edmonton weather: Snowfall warning in effect; 10 to 20 cm expected
Well this was unexpected.
Yesterday forecasters were calling for a modest 2 to 4 cm of snow today but that has since morphed into a whole other animal completely.
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the city of Edmonton Friday as forecasters warn of heavy snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm expected by this afternoon.
“General snowfall amounts will be 10-15 cm, however, locally heavier amounts of 20-25 cm is possible by the time the snow ends this afternoon,” reads the w -
Friday's letters: Green projects don't justify carbon tax
Re. “It’s time for the UCP to show its cards on climate change,” Keith Gerein, March 7
Keith Gerein’s column suggests that the NDP’s Climate Leadership Plan is working because a number of communities and individuals are using carbon tax money to do things such as installing solar panels.
It’s hardly surprising that people would take advantage of grants, subsidies and other government handouts, no matter what the source. That is not proof that a carbon tax does -
Energy Efficiency Alberta dismayed by Kenney's plan to slash agency
The board chairman of Energy Efficiency Alberta is challenging Jason Kenney on his plan to potentially shut the agency down under a UCP government.
“This is an investment you should make regardless of where the money comes from,” said David Dodge in an interview Thursday. “Frankly, we were surprised and dismayed by (his) comments.”
On Wednesday, Kenney criticized the work done by the arm’s-length provincial agency. It operates programs funded by the carbon tax.

Carbon tax no 'marketing gimmick;' economist says a successful carbon levy will eliminate itself
While United Conservative Party Leader Jason Kenney this week called carbon tax-funded programs a “marketing gimmick,” the NDP government has warned green projects across Alberta would be at risk if the carbon tax disappeared.
Who’s right? It depends who you ask.
After Postmedia ran a series of articles this week about projects and programs funded mostly by the province’s carbon tax, Kenney tweeted on Tuesday, “No one tax funds a particular expenditure.”

Cult of Hockey player grades: Oilers hold off the Canucks 3-2, keeping Edmonton's slender post-season hopes alive
Edmonton Oilers 3 Vancouver Canucks 2
The Edmonton Oilers are still alive.
A 3-2 win at Rogers Place Thursday night keeps the Oilers 7 out of a Wild Card spot (The WIld beat the Lightnihg 3-0, thanks a hell of a lot, Tampa) . The home team got off to a terrific start against the visiting Canucks who were playing their 2nd of consecutive back-to-back games, the latter on the road. The Oilers built up a 3-0 lead, then survived some undisciplined neutral zone play and a soft goal-against to hang on -
Watch: Edmonton Oilers win fourth in a row at home against Vancouver Canucks
Fourth in a row feels good for the Edmonton Oilers after they hung on to a late rush from a slow to start Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place Thursday. Head coach Ken Hitchcock says the keys to the team’s 3-2 victory are forged in tenacity and the play of players like goaltender Mikko Koskinen, who held the line on March 7.
Hitchcock says that despite the appearance of a footrace beginning in the third period as the Canucks came up from behind, the Oilers were able to keep their heads, slow -

David Staples: Sohi confident that welcoming approach will get pipelines built
Every time I see Amarjeet Sohi, he talks about how 99 per cent of Canadian oil exports go to one country, the United States.
Sohi, the federal minister of natural resources, has staked his political future on changing that fact. His goal is to get pipelines built to the coast, starting with the stalled Trans Mountain pipeline expansion (TMX).
Sohi is confident the approach of his federal Liberal government will succeed, even in the face of tremendous challenges. For one thing, the SNC-Lavalin sc
