  • David Staples: Notley, Kenney reveal duelling visions for oil

Jason Kenney and Rachel Notely have major strategies to get Alberta’s oil economy on track, but Kenney plans a much more significant step than Notley when it comes to getting results.
Kenney is proposing to cut corporate taxes from 12 per cent to 8 per cent, a move that repudiates Notley’s economic vision. The NDP raised corporate taxes from 10 per cent to 12 per cent in 2016.

Alberta’s carbon tax is either “the most hated” NDP policy or a critical commitment to the environment for future generations, depending on who you talk to.

I know I know, March is not technically or historically a nice-weather month. It’s not spring, even though the Spring Equinox is mere weeks away (March 20), but it’s not really meant to be winter either. Which is why waking up to a -24 wind chill is

Re. “Alberta must adapt to looming shift in global energy markets,” Opinion, March 1
Thank you Gil McGowan for your conclusion that Alberta is going in the right direction based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration report for 2019.
However, it would have been much more useful to state that your conclusion is based on the worst-case scenario for oil. The report holds six scenarios, out to 2050, four of which show an increase in oil production over the period.

  • Editorial: Explain value of the carbon tax

Two years after it was introduced, the provincial carbon tax remains among Alberta’s most divisive political issues.
It’s so polarizing that UCP Leader Jason Kenney promises that repealing the hot-button tax will be the first piece of legislation his government will pass should he become premier.
But it doesn’t have to be this way; it’s worth asking, if the NDP government did a better job of showing where the revenue goes, would the carbon tax’s 6.73-cent per litre
  • When energy-efficient light bulbs got political in Alberta

Energy-efficient light bulbs became something of a political hand grenade in Alberta in February 2017 when the government announced the lights would be part of a direct install program funded by the carbon tax.
