Pipeline giant Enbridge has filed a $29.5 million lawsuit against four companies over a 2017 spill it says was caused by construction on another pipeline nearby.
Enbridge’s Line 2A east of Edmonton pipeline breached on Feb. 17, 2017, causing nearly 1,000 cubic metres of crude oil condensate blend to spill into the surrounding construction site, west of Anthony Henday Drive near 92 Avenue.
Enbridge filed a statement of claim against the four companies on Feb. 15, claiming they played a role

'Creepy' or 'relevant'? Video of Notley staffer and independent MLA under scrutiny
Alberta’s Legislative Assembly Office staff said they are looking into the publication of a slow-motion video that shows an independent MLA and a senior adviser to the premier leaving a meeting in the Federal Building.
UCP leader Jason Kenney’s office released the video on Twitter Monday night, showing Notley’s director of issues management Jeremy Nolais and Calgary-Greenway MLA Prab Gill leaving the same meeting. It quickly drew criticism. The video was taken outside an elevat -

The incident occurred in December 2017.
The charge follows an investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch which was reviewed by Alberta Justice.

Wildlife: The ESO charts course for two stellar nights with The Music of Star Trek
Music has always been crucial to Star Trek’s otherworldly vibe.
As early as its second-aired episode as Uhura sings to Spock about the Vulcan of Enterprise being in “Satan’s guise,” Star Trek demonstrated something that would always be crucial to its character: so much memorable music.
While some Trek tunes stumbled into deep camp (think of the space hippies heading out to Eden, yay, brother!), music from Spock’s “bitter dregs” to Trelane’s di -
'We love how weird we are': Girl Brain brings collective comedy to SkirtsAfire stage
When the members of sketch comedy group Girl Brain get together to talk at a restaurant, the laughs sometimes get a little out of control.
Considering the wealth of comic and acting talent at the table this shouldn’t come as much of a shock. The trio (Alyson Dicey, Ellie Heath, and Caley Suliak) have risen quickly in the local scene after setting down roots at the south side Grindstone Theatre nearly a year ago, grabbing accolades for their absurdist scenarios and ability to find humour in -
International musical friendships spark new tunes here at home
Musicians touring abroad know how helpful it can be to rank as an exotic import, an artist from some far-flung place — Canada maybe? — playing sounds the locals aren’t familiar with.
Just as artists from the other side of the planet might attract the curious here in Alberta, Canada’s roots super-group Tri-Continental has made some of its most fruitful tours in Spain, Germany, and other parts of western Europe. After playing together on and off for 20 years, string slinger -

Crunching the carbon tax data: How we did it
The carbon tax will, without question, be one of the biggest political footballs in the 2019 election.
With the election drawing near and two full years of the tax now collected, we wanted to know where the money went. Who’s getting the extra cash we pay on our heating bills each month? Where’s the 6.73 cents per litre on my gas fill-up going?
Postmedia asked the provincial government for a list of all projects funded by the tax since it came into effect on Jan. 1, 2017.
What we rece -
Alberta's had a carbon tax on big emitters for a decade focused on funding research
A decade before individual Albertans started paying a carbon tax, the province began billing large industrial polluters for carbon emissions.
That industrial carbon tax on businesses generating more than 100,000 tones of greenhouse gases per year was earmarked to fund green-inspired technology and innovation. It is distributed through an arm’s-length provincial agency.
That agency, which began in 2009 as the Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation, has since been renamed Emissi -
Oilers in 60: Oilers inching closer to the playoffs … playoffs??
Believe it or not, but the Edmonton Oilers are quietly closing the gap on the Western Conference wild card spot and inching towards a playoff spot — playoffs!?
That’s right. The Oilers (29-30-7) wrapped up their five-game road trip in Buffalo Monday with a 4-3 win over the Sabres to earn the two points and move within six points of the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild — both are tied with 71 points on the season — and the final wild card spots.
Monday’s game was a wi -

Cracking open the carbon tax: A look at where the money has been spent
The carbon tax has pulled in more than $2 billion since it was introduced two years ago to fund local green projects in every corner of Alberta, but it remains the most pummelled punching bag in provincial politics.
From the tax’s beginning on Jan. 1, 2017, it has plumped Alberta’s green fund coffers via gas pumps and heating bills. Everyone knows they pay it, but what’s been far less visible is exactly where that money has gone.

Edmonton weather: The sun is burning my eyes – my eyes!
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Tuesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -14.9 C with 10 km/h winds out of the northwest contributing to a -21 wind chill.
So we’re at that point now where it’s sunny outside all day but it’s not really warm so it’s all kind of one giant tease. Looking outside you’d think it’s a beautiful day. The sky is that rich, dark blue with not a cloud in the sk -

Tuesday's letters: Safe-injection sites offer support, care
Our family is in the midst of the opioid crisis. I walk my dog and see makeshift homeless shelters in the forest, and we all see the tragedy of the walking homeless, the addicted and the challenged.
Living with addiction in your circle teaches you about compassion and you begin to realize just how many people struggle with day-to-day challenges.
These safe-injection sites are one of the most compassionate sources of help we can give an addict. They offer support, care, and a place for the caring -
Opinion: Women have equality in numbers in medicine, but not equity
Canadian women in medicine have come a long way since the mid-1800s when Dr. Jennie Kidd Trout required special permission to attend medical school. Today, we have trailblazers like Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut and the first neurologist to fly in space, and Dr. Nadine Caron, Canada’s first female Indigenous general surgeon.
Our medical schools now have an almost even split between men and women entering the profession; in 2017, two out of five physicians in Can -
Watch: Barrhead received $248,196 from carbon tax
The Town of Barrhead hadn’t really considered attaching $94,080 worth of solar panels atop its new aquatic centre until the contractors proposed it and said grants were available to help cover the cost.
Although the panels’ productivity plunges in winter, they produce enough heat to melt the snow until around -10 C.
Aquatic centre maintenance manager Mike Bryant says it’s too early to say whether the investment was worth it — installing the panels was a large expense. -

Player grades: Edmonton Oilers don't make it easy on themselves, but escape Buffalo with 2 points
Oilers 4, Sabres 3
Wild and woolly hockey game in Buffalo on Monday night between two teams with remarkably similar histories in recent years. At times it seemed like a battle to see who could find a way to lose it, and from that perspective the home-standing Sabres out-Oilers’d the visitors who snuck out of town with a 4-3 regulation win.
The Oil got off to another quick start with Leon Draisaitl opening the scoring for the third time on the 5-game road trip, but struggled through the rem -
Detached home sales in Edmonton suffer five-year February low, realtors association says
Less than 600 single-family detached homes were sold in the frigid month of February, marking a five-year low for the month in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region.
But it’s not all bad news for the city’s housing market with the short month garnering a 23 per cent increase in all residential unit sales from a slow January that had only 797 total sales, monthly statistics released Monday by the Realtors Association of Edmonton show.
In comparison, 986 total residential units were sold in -

Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel is eligible to run in the upcoming Alberta provincial election.
Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Gaylene Kendell ruled Mandel acted in good faith when he missed the deadline to file his campaign expense paperwork.

Watch: Mandel allowed to run in upcoming provincial election
