Contrary to what you might have heard, Alberta’s current economic malaise has little to do with government policies or “foreign-funded” environmentalists.
The real problem is that the global oil and gas sector is in the midst of a fundamental transformation.
The first dimension of this transformation has to do with the United States. As a result of the fracking boom, U.S. oil production has more than doubled in 10 years, turning the U.S. into the world’s largest oil produ -
Friday's letters: Justice must be independent
The independence of the judiciary is a fundamental cornerstone of a democracy. Reflecting on the quagmire Jody Wilson-Raybould was in recently, the solution is clear. The final decision of the attorney-general is sacred.
The prime minister’s office, the cabinet and bureaucrats must respect any decision. Of course, politicians will lobby for their constituents (and self interest), but must respect fundamental principles that define our democratic system — the independence of the judic -
Watch: 40 years after the Mill Woods Explosion
Peter Clark talks about the massive explosion that changed his life and led to the formation of Alberta One Call, better fire resistant clothing and emergency preparedness in Edmonton.
He was delivering a load of glass windows for homes under construction in Mill Woods and decided to finish the job before breaking for lunch. He was driving slow and vaguely recalled a white cloud he thought was smoke.
“The next thing I knew, I got this very strong smell of propane. The truck stalled and the -
Three to See on Friday: Mellowed out rockers and comic book mentors
Young the Giant: Their latest album, Mirror Master, contains a track called Superposition best described by frontman Sameer Gadhia: “Each decision splits into a myriad of mirrors; a system of lines that enlace, entangle, and intersect. But in every one, you and I were bound to meet. It may be on the bleachers, in an airplane, the DMV, a race track, a bar, a tiny ship that crosses the ocean at night; but we would have found each other, and like light yawns across eons to spill on the f -
My not-so-amazing black widow spider adventure in Edmonton apartment
I bought a plant and ended up with a nasty house guest. On Wednesday night after arriving home from work, I planned to kick back and relax on the couch. Those plans quickly went awry when I noticed a large black figure floating in the air by my newly purchased plant.
The figure, it turns out, was a spider about five centimetres long. Now, readers should note I understand the usefulness of spiders. I would like to see them live, but judging by the size and upon closer — and highly cau -
February temperatures nine degrees colder than annual average, coldest in 40 years
Edmontonians just went through the city’s coldest February in 40 years.
This year’s average February temperature was close to nine degrees colder than the annual average, leading to the coldest February since 1979.
“Our average temperature for the month has been -19.7 C and in an average February we would have a mean temperature of -10.1 C,” said Kyle Fougere, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.
In Edmonton, February is historically the second coldest month of the ye -
Elise Stolte: Historic Mill Woods explosion a reminder of the threat still flowing under Edmonton
One man was burned and an explosive cloud of propane moving across Mill Woods was bad enough. Then fire crews realized it was seeping into the sewers.
It sounds like the plot line for an apocalyptic movie but it happened right here; the 40th anniversary is Saturday.
The 228,000 gallons of propane created an unpredictable, moving bomb underneath the neighbourhood that blew off toilet lids and manholes as the pressure built, leading to one of the largest peacetime evacuations in Canada. As the day -
David Staples: Oil industry takes fierce aim at foreign-funded anti-oil activists
I did not see anyone actually breathe fire but there was nonetheless plenty of red-hot rhetoric when Edmonton’s business community got together this week to plot about the rebirth of Alberta’s oil and gas sector.
Alberta’s oilpatch hasn’t fumed like this since the 1980s. It’s now waking up to the fact that paid anti-pipeline activists, many of them foreign-funded, got the best of the industry.
“We started to believe that our industry was unstoppable, that succ -

Player grades: McDavid, Koskinen rebound to lead Oilers over Senators 4-2
Oilers 4, Senators 2
In a sloppy affair between two teams in the lower reaches of the NHL standings, Edmonton Oilers held on to defeat Ottawa Senators 4-2. They’ll take the two points, even as they probably won’t enjoy certain junctures in the morning-after video session.
After a horrible showing in Toronto one night previous, the Oilers didn’t hit their pillows in Ottawa until some time after 03:00. They started slow and finished slow, but found enough juice in between times t -
Committee report recommends preventing appeals for taxi drivers with criminal records
A report going before the community and public services committee next week recommends changes to a bylaw surrounding criminal record rules for taxi drivers by tweaking language for clarity and preventing appeals to refusals of driver applications.
The report comes after council members disagreed on how the vehicle-for-hire bylaw should be interpreted and what counts as a related offence as some taxi drivers were getting licences despite having criminal convictions including domestic assault and -
Edmonton police seeking witnesses to violent assault in southeast Edmonton
Edmonton police are looking for witnesses to a violent, random assault that has left a 65-year-old man fighting for his life in hospital.
At around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a call for assistance near 48 Street and 22 Avenue, in the neighbourhood of Pollard Meadows, police said in a news release Thursday.
There, officers found a man on the ground in medical distress. Emergency medical services treated and transported the man to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains i -
Detractors should stop spreading harmful misinformation about GSAs, presenter says
Jeremy Dias laughed after hearing that some detractors call school gay-straight alliances groups “ideological sex clubs.”
Tongue in cheek, the executive director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity said they wish it were true.
“The last thing we’re talking about is sex,” said Dias, who uses the pronoun “they,” in a Thursday interview. “The No. 1 thing we’re talking about is the violence that trans and non-binary people are -

Airport, southwest hospital plan, Valley Line LRT impacting Edmonton's core real estate: CBRE report
The Edmonton International Airport, a proposed southwest Edmonton hospital, and the Valley Line LRT expansion are driving long-range commercial real estate trends, says a report from the real estate firm CBRE.
One of the largest outside commercial and economic drivers is the Edmonton International Airport (EIA) expansion, says the 2019 Canadian Real Estate Market Outlook, released Thursday.
The report notes that the EIA continues to develop its available land to expand flight operations as well -
Child who flew through Leduc with measles was not properly vaccinated: health authorities
A child who flew through Leduc earlier this month with a confirmed case of measles was not properly vaccinated, say health authorities.
The person was traveling to Inuvik, N.W.T., from an international location and stopped in Leduc overnight Feb. 12-13.
Damien Healy, a spokesman for the Government of the Northwest Territories health department, confirmed the infected individual was a child who was not properly vaccinated.
The measles case prompted Alberta Health Services (AHS) to issue a public
