Alberta deficit down $1.9 billion on heels of oil curtailment
Alberta’s finance minister says the province’s deficit will be $1.9 billion less in 2018-19 than originally expected, despite the volatile oil differential that hounded energy producers last fall.

What to make of that Adam Larsson to the Toronto Maple Leafs rumour? Sounds way off
This in from Jimmy Murphy, a Boston sports commentator: “Hearing again today that #LetsGoOilers and #LeafsForever discussed a large trade that would’ve seen defenseman Adam Larsson end up in Toronto and Connor Brown end up in Edmonton. There were lots of moving pieces and that’s likely why it didn’t happen. Could revisit in offseason.”

A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.

Wednesday's letters: Climbing Mount Everest a bad idea
Every year, many people climb Mount Everest, and that is a risky choice. This is something dangerous and terrible. Lots of people climb Mount Everest without getting all the facts.
Sherpas risk their lives to help you. They carry your things, help you find the best way up, and help you set up camp. They do all this for only around $4,000 per trip. By using a Sherpa not only is your life in danger, you just put theirs in danger too.

Editorial: Keep photo radar focused on safety
Alberta’s transportation minister confirmed last week what many drivers already know — too often photo radar is used as a moneymaker instead of a public-safety tool.
That is obvious every time a driver sees the tell-tale camera flash in the rear-view mirror if they fail to brake quickly enough when a highway approaches a city or town and speed limits drop.
It is also evident that photo radar the way it’s usually used is of questionable value in keeping roads safe when commuters -
Elise Stolte: Turning a blind eye to fare evasion doesn't create safer buses
Creating counterfeit transit passes is now as simple as making a colour photocopy on glossy card stock. And still Edmonton bus drivers say they’re waving through passengers who use fraudulent payment or no payment at all, rather than dealing with potential violence.
“You’ve got a fraction of a second and we’re directed not to enforce it anyway,” said one of several bus drivers who spoke with me about a steadily growing issue on Edmonton Transit buses.

David Staples: Want to whip climate change? Go nuclear, says Alberta advocate
Want to whip climate change? It’s time to embrace the nuclear option, which is, in fact, nuclear power.
So argues Alberta’s most enthusiastic advocate for nuclear power, engineer Sean Wagner, who runs the Alberta Nuclear Nucleus blog to educate folks on the benefits of nuclear energy.
Alberta uses 10 to 11 gigawatts of electrical power each day. A nuclear plant will produce 0.5 to 1.3 gigawatts per day. So with about a dozen such plants we’d meet all of Alberta’s electric -

“Kenney isn’t being open with the public about his for-profit ideology, but chooses to focus on distractions,” said Health Sciences Association of Alberta president Mike Parker in a statement Tuesday.

Watch: Alberta advocate pushes for nuclear energy
Alberta’s most enthusiastic advocate for nuclear power might be engineer Sean Wagner, who runs the Alberta Nuclear Nucleus blog promoting the benefits of nuclear energy.
A nuclear plant could produce 0.5 to 1.3 gigawatts per day and about a dozen nuclear plants would meet all of Alberta’s electrical needs with essentially zero carbon emissions, Wagner says.

Omar Khadr is requesting the three and half years remaining on his 2010 youth sentence be reduced to just one day as he continues to wait for a decision on a U.S appeal.
Khadr was granted bail in 2015 when he launched an appeal on his conviction for the killing of American special forces soldier Christopher Speer during a firefight in Afghanistan when Khadr was 15. His eight-year sentence stopped counting down when bail was granted and the appeal still hasn’t been heard. Without bail, Khad
