Campaign manager for UCP leadership hopeful Jeff Callaway handed $15,000 fine
Alberta’s election commissioner has handed a $15,000 penalty to Cameron Davies, who was a co-campaign manager for Jeff Callaway’s bid for United Conservative Party leadership in 2017.
Two penalties of $7,500 each were issued Tuesday for “obstruction of an investigation.”
No details were provided about the offences, which is custom during investigations by the elections commissioner.
Callaway dropped out of the race in October 2017 to endorse Jason Kenney, who went on to w -

A shortlist of contenders vying to build the Valley Line West LRT extension will be announced in May, following a Tuesday city council vote to move the project ahead.
An extra $30.5 million was added onto the project’s budget, bringing the cost of building the line from downtown to Lewis Farms to over $2-billion.
The extra millions will be used to run the processes and reviews of the bids to build the project.

Teen girl beaten after stopping to help fellow motorist west of Edmonton: RCMP
A teen girl suffered assault injuries after being flagged down by a man who appeared to be a stranded motorist west of Edmonton, say RCMP.
The youth was in her vehicle on Parkland Drive and turned south on Range Road 20 in Parkland County around 9:30 p.m. Friday when she saw a man standing in the middle of the road, a truck with its lights on parked nearby, said RCMP in a Tuesday news release.

Cappies reviews: Chicago
By Jaren Voigt
St. Oscar Romero High School
Charismatic and provocative, Chicago was a captivating show. With passionate singing, thrilling dance, and stunningly coordinated tech work, Bellerose Composite High School’s fun exploration of this classic musical was enthralling from curtain to curtain.Poking fun at criminal celebrities and the fleeting nature of infamy, Chicago is based on a 1926 play of the same name written by a reporter about real murder cases. The musical was written in 19 -
10 things to do in Edmonton this week: Daniel Romano, Racetime, and Jeremy Dutcher
Daniel Romano
After releasing three distinctly different albums in 2018 you could be forgiven for wondering exactly what you’ll get with Daniel Romano on Friday night at the Starlite. The Ontario-based singer-songwriter has been wandering through various stylistic terrains with Nerveless, Human Touch, and Finally Free, giving full rein to his interests in country, folk, psych, pop, rock, and punk, refusing to settle on any one direction. With Dead Soft and Bitters.

Foreigner brings Cold as Ice tour to River Cree
For now, the search continues.
Who is the real Jukebox Hero? Roughly a month ago, Toronto DJ Stu Jeffries sparked interest in finding the inspiration behind one of Foreigner’s best-known songs as part of renewed interest in the iconic 1981 classic-rock staple. Last week, a musical of the same name that is based around 16 of the band’s biggest hits opened at Toronto’s Ed Mirvish Theatre. The hope was that the ultimate fan who inspired the song, written by Foreigner founder and g -
Choreographer turns tragedy into complex work for Ballet Edmonton
How does a choreographer translate the emotional fallout from two real-life mass tragedies to the medium of contemporary dance?
Back in mid-2017, Edmonton’s internationally celebrated rising star Josh Beamish wasn’t sure how, but he knew he had to try.
“The end of 2016 and the first half of 2017 kind of felt like that’s when the world went insane,” Beamish recalls. “That’s when Trump took office and Brexit also happened. Nothing seemed to make sense anym -

Audrey Whaley in her bookstore in 1978.
As Edmonton’s longest-surviving independent bookseller, Audreys Books is a peak downtown literacy nexus — a community hub for local and visiting authors where you can also pick up a Doctor Who novel not far from Tanya Tagaq’s poetry.
But what’s the deal with that non-apostrophe in the name? Why isn’t it a more possessive “Audrey’s” Books on Seventh and Jasper?
It’s because the Audreys are actually a pai -

Tuesday's letters: High health costs merit a review
Re. “Review a precursor to privatization,” Letters, Feb. 23
Guy Smith’s letter is extremely misleading and an overt attempt at fear-mongering. No stats, or source of information is provided, only that Alberta spends less as a percentage of GDP on health than other provinces.
According to the Canadian Institute for Health, the national per capita spent on health care in 2017 was $6,000. Alberta spent the second-highest of all provinces, at $7,300 per capita, with Newfoundland sp -
Editorial: Drop writ or stop campaigning
If something sounds like an election campaign, looks like an election campaign and feels like an election campaign, it probably is one.
By all appearances, the government is waging a campaign for an election that hasn’t been called with a series of high-profile media events that resemble all-out whistle stops in everything but name. It’s an established tactic in Alberta politics to electioneer with public money, but that doesn’t make it right.
The latest example is the most egr -

McCauley residents question cluster of inner-city pharmacies
A cluster of inner-city pharmacies has some McCauley community and business leaders questioning whether some of the roughly 30 shops are taking advantage of Edmonton’s most vulnerable.
It’s an issue that has McCauley residents looking to city hall and other regulatory agencies for answers — a count of pharmacies in March 2018 revealed 21 either within or directly on the borders of their community and another nine within two blocks of McCauley’s boundaries.

Extreme, prolonged cold weather may affect Alberta honeybee population
Despite the best efforts of beekeepers to keep honeybees warm, prolonged freezing temperatures like what Alberta has experienced in February can make it harder for the bees to survive the winter.
Honeybees are not native to Alberta, having been brought over by European settlers and then spread across North America. Therefore, they need a little bit of extra help to survive our “normal” cold winters, said Ron Miksha, a beekeeper based in Calgary.
This means one would be hard-pressed t -

Player grades: Edmonton Oilers hang around to scrape a point out of Nashville
Oilers 2, Predators 3* (SO)
Edmonton Oilers were up against it on Monday night, on the road against one of the top powers in the West and again trying to make do without their alpha and omega, Connor McDavid. None of which changed the fact that the Oilers needed some sort of result from this game. And they got one, overcoming a 2-1 deficit in the final period to take the game to overtime and ultimately, the shootout. No joy there, but the Oil still came away with a largely-deserved point for the -
