Valley Line LRT bridge spans installed at 75 Street and Whitemud Drive
Construction on the southeast leg of the Valley Line LRT took one giant leap forward Friday.
In the dark, blistering cold, the first concrete span for the Whitemud LRT Bridge was installed overnight alongside the existing bridge on 75 Street in Mill Woods. Using a multi-axle Mammoet’s Self-Propelled Modular Trailers (SPMTs), crews began installing the span at 11:00 p.m. Friday and wrapped things up by 2:30 a.m. Saturday. A second span will be installed Saturday night.

If it's really concerned about player safety, it's time for NHL to bring its rule book into the 21st Century
Game Day 61: Ducks at Oilers
I’m of two minds about the Connor McDavid suspension.
The hemisphere that is Oiler fan — or hockey fan for that matter — is choked that the NHL’s most dynamic talent will be held out of tonight’s important divisional contest against Anaheim Ducks, one in which an Oiler victory could see them leapfrog the Ducks into (ahem) 13th place in the Western Conference — or if you prefer, seventh in the race for the two wild card spots. -

B.C. constitutional challenge of Alberta’s fuel restriction law tossed
A court challenge by the British Columbia government over Alberta’s fuel restriction law has been shot down by a Calgary judge who said B.C. took the case to court prematurely.
B.C. Attorney General David Eby filed a statement of claim in Alberta’s Court of Queen’s Bench on May 22, 2018 challenging the constitutionality of Alberta’s Preserving Canada’s Economic Prosperity Act or Bill 12.
Alberta brought the legislation in amidst extreme tension with B.C. over the Ho -
Review: ESO reaches new heights with Sibelius Festival opening concert
We learnt two things from the unwaveringly successful opening concert in the Edmonton Symphony orchestra’s Sibelius Festival on Friday evening at the Winspear Centre.
The first is that its chief conductor, Alexander Prior, has all the makings of a great Sibelius interpreter (indeed, he is already much of the way there). The second is that the orchestra is now playing at a standard they have never reached before, and which, I would suggest, they were incapable of a couple of years ago.

The jig is up: Edmonton busker ticketed for aggressive panhandling outside Rogers Place
An Edmonton busker claims police used unnecessary force to arrest him while he was performing outside Rogers Place last week.
Jarret Gray says an Edmonton police officer slammed him against an electrical box and handcuffed him after he asked why he had to stop playing his violin. Gray said he then received a $285 ticket for aggressive panhandling.
Gray says he is a regular busker who commonly plays outside the arena’s doors closest to the casino entrance during Oilers games. He said he has -

Edmonton weather: Saturday morning cartoons and -25 wind chill
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Saturday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -15.4 C with 20 km/h winds gusting to 32 km/h out of the north contributing to a -25 wind chill.
Much like the title suggests, the wind chill is wreaking havoc in the city right now. Winds are expected to bring wind chill values near -27 today and near -30 overnight so that’s fun. I don’t mind the cold but the wind — the darn w -

Saturday's letters: AHS review a precursor to privatization
Re. “Kenney needs to do a little homework,” Keith Gerein, Feb. 21
I was pleased Keith Gerein took a critical look at UCP Leader Jason Kenney’s plans to shake up health care. A critique of all parties’ policies will be essential as Albertans head to the polls.
Regardless of the “public health guarantee,” Kenney’s plan to review Alberta Health Services is a Trojan-horse approach to increase privatization.
It’s no secret Kenney supports private care. -
Opinion: Supreme Court ruling will chill reporting on scandals
The two biggest political scandals in the news right now — the Mark Norman trial, and the Trudeau/SNC-Lavalin controversy — were exposed by a reliable source who secretly shared information with a journalist. Increasingly, this is only viable way that scandals are brought to the public’s attention in this country.
More traditional methods of uncovering wrongdoing or criminality — access to information laws that disclose government documents, and whistleblower protections -

Keith Gerein: Even a court victory unlikely to save Alberta Party, Mandel from self-inflicted injuries
The art of dodging bullets, metaphorically speaking, is a course every successful politician tends to learn at some point.
The most difficult projectiles to elude are those they aim at their own feet.
A prime example is the case of Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel, who has been hobbled with a five-year election ban due to some tardy paperwork.
On Friday, Mandel’s lawyers were in an Edmonton courtroom, asking a judge to reinstate his eligibility to lead the party into the upcoming race. -
Stephen Mandel's election eligibility in limbo, decision on five-year ban reserved to next week
Alberta Party Leader Stephen Mandel will have to wait a little longer to find out if he can run in the upcoming provincial election.
Mandel filed a court application for a judicial review after he was issued a five-year election ban for failing to file his nomination contest financial statements on time.
