Connor McDavid suspended for two games for head shot on Nick Leddy
The National Hockey League department of player safety has given Connor McDavid a two game suspension for his hit to the head on Nick Leddy.
My takeMcDavid hits Leddy on the head with his shoulder. I hate the fact that McDavid has been suspended, but I’m not going to complain too bitterly. If this hit had been on McDavid, I would have been calling for a suspension no doubt about it.
Here’s what Oilers Asst. GM Keith Gretzky told Mark Spector of Sportnset about the hit: &ldquo -

Player grades, Games 51-60: Process improving but results hard to come by for struggling Oilers
Remember when the Edmonton Oilers were sailing along at 18-12-3 and battling for first place in the Pacific Division? I do too, but barely.
It’s been a long, hard fall from that point in mid-December to now. The Oilers won just 7 of their next 27 games, including a win in Game #60 that ended their third losing streak of 5+ games during that span.
That win over New York Islanders on Thursday night was just the second for the Oilers in the last five weeks, more specifically the second in the -

Fash was released from custody just over a week ago after the second-degree murder charge he previously faced for the death of Jeanette Marie Cardinal, 40, was stayed.

Education minister banning school seclusion rooms effective September 2019
Alberta’s education minister will issue a ministerial order next week to ban seclusion rooms in schools as of September.
In a Friday morning email to a panel of government-appointed experts studying the issue, Minister David Eggen said all school seclusion rooms must be decommissioned by the 2019-20 school year. These sparse rooms, often locked from the outside, are used to isolate students having behavioural outbursts.
“I am deeply concerned about some of the things that parents and -

Oilers in 60: McDavid and Draisaitl are the tag team champions of OT
You have to hand it to this Oilers team — they don’t give up easily.
After clawing back in the third period against the Arizona Coyotes Tuesday only to lose in a shootout, the Oilers found themselves in a similar scenario Thursday against the visiting New York Islanders.
Heading into the third period down a goal the Oilers would go on to out-shoot the Islanders 17-6 in the final frame as Oscar Klefbom scored the tying goal late in the game with less than three minutes to go to send i -
Notable Niche: Belgravia Square development utilizes geothermal technology
John Clarke says Niche Developments’ original goal wasn’t to build eco-friendly condominiums and apartments, but the Edmonton-based company’s president says marrying prefabricated concrete and structural steel to geothermal heating is the future for large, sustainable buildings.
Clarke says commercial and residential buildings contribute to almost 50 per cent of our greenhouse gases, and apartment buildings are typically the most polluting because they require boilers that run -
Growing Things: Watering tools and drought-tolerant plants offer low-maintenance gardening
Q: We are part owners of a vacation rental property in Palm Springs, California. It is located in a three-storey building, and our unit is on the ground level, so we are able to do a little more gardening than the others in the building that only have balconies. We have a 200-square-foot area of garden plus our concrete patio, which is 100 square feet.
Our problem is that while we would love to be there to garden year-round, we cannot because the property is shared. The other owners are les -

Dining Out: Suda Thai Cuisine offers quality family-run fare in Sherwood Park
Edmonton has no shortage of Thai restaurants, many of them long-standing favourites among local foodies. Still, it’s nice to see another one pop up, particularly in the often-underserved suburb of Sherwood Park.
Suda Thai Cuisine opened about nine months ago in a sprawling strip mall between Costco and the Millennium Place rec centre along Broadmoor Boulevard. A corner bay with lots of windows, it looks out on the grim wintry scene of a frozen parking lot and distant dental clinic.

Fitness column: Resistance training boosts gains beyond cardio
Despite some very promising research giving a big thumbs up to resistance training, the annual pilgrimage of cardio-philes looking to thwart winter weight gain continues to beat a path to treadmills. (As I write this, the weight machines sit empty as cardio equipment hums at high frequency.)
Studies recently posted in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found the benefits of weight training were not limited to big biceps. Researchers demonstrated a significant impact on bone health, physical function, cardi -

Friday's letters: Tell your doctor if you use cannabis
As a health-care provider I was pleased to see the Journal provide their readers with a credible introduction to medical cannabis. (Cannabis Post, Feb. 19)

Unfortunately, this has led to a growing trend among patients. Armed with media information and Google searches, seniors are provided with c -
Editorial: Make shots mandatory
With the latest outbreaks of measles plaguing Vancouver, Washington State, and the Philippines, it’s time for the provincial government to get serious about protecting Albertans — especially our children — and make vaccines mandatory for children attending publicly funded schools.

David Staples: Mass discontent in Edmonton minor hockey over failed tiering reforms
Too many blow-out games, less competitive balance in tournaments and demoralized young players looking to quit minor hockey are the end result of Hockey Edmonton’s new tiering system, say minor hockey parents, coaches and organizers.

Son speaks out for cab-driver safety after father beaten in southeast Edmonton
A veteran city cab driver hospitalized with a smashed cheekbone after he was attacked by a fare has his son advocating for more driver safety.
Balwinder Singh Mander — a cabbie for 25 years — initially picked up a couple of passengers from a bar in the southeast neighbourhood of Ellerslie around 2 a.m. Family Day Monday, his son Vick Mander said this week.
After dropping off one passenger in Beaumont, the other became evasive in providing a drop-off location so the driver asked him f -
Oil Spills: Don't expect the Edmonton Oilers to simply appoint Keith Gretzky as new GM
Should Keith Gretzky — brother of The Great One, Wayne, now an Oilers Entertainment Group vice-chairman — be seriously considered the next permanent general manager of the Edmonton Oilers to replace the fired Peter Chiarelli?
Hockey beat writer Jim Matheson talks to host Craig Ellingson about that idea, plus about what kind of head coach the Oilers will probably look at hiring for next season, assuming it’s unlikely Ken Hitchcock will be back for 2019-20. -

Player grades: Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl again with the overtime magic
The Edmonton Oilers got a well-deserved 4-3 win on a much-loved overtime combo goal, Leon Draisaitl to Connor McDavid.
If only the whole game every game was played three-on-three there would be no stopping the Edmonton Oilers.
As it is the Oilers are six point out of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference, with little hope of catching up.
Not that I did not say “no hope,” as after such a fine goal by McDavid and Draisaitl it’s not right to be entirely pessimistic. W -

“If you play with nicotine you’re going to get burnt,” said Action on Smoking and Health’s executive director Les Hagen.
Hagen said 35,000 Alberta youth currently use nicotine products.
“Ironically, it appears that the passage of federal vaping legislation last May gave the green light to tobacco and vaping companies to engage in aggressive mark -

In the early morning of Jan. 1, 2013, three men were waiting in a car at a McDonald’s drive-thru on Castle Downs Road when a man approached the vehicle with a knife.
