Watch: Health group calls for federal and provincial action on youth vaping
The use of vaping devices by Alberta high school students almost tripled between 2015 and 2017, says anti-smoking advocacy group Action on Smoking and Health.
“Ironically, it appears that the passage of federal vaping legislation last May gave the green light to tobacco and vaping companies to engage in aggressive marketing campaigns that are targeting youth with lifestyle advertising on television, social media and in retail locations,” said Action on Smoking and Health’s Les -

Prove it or lose it: Alberta gives cities one year to show photo radar more than 'cash cow'
Photo radar across the province is only marginally improving traffic safety, Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason said Thursday, promising new rules for municipalities who abuse it.
Cities, towns and counties that can’t prove their programs improve safety could risk losing the traffic monitoring tool altogether, Mason said during a press conference at the legislature.
Mason said while photo radar has gone some way to reduce serious and fatal collisions, they are, for the most part, -

Not trade Alex Chiasson? Huh? That makes little sense
This in from broadcaster Bob Stauffer of the Oilers radio network: “Because of the injury situations with both Jesse Puljujarvi and Jujhar Khaira it is a distinct possibility that the Oilers could be quiet on a the trade front with a potential UFA like Alex Chiasson. Bottom line. Oilers are light on NHL forward depth.”
Pierre LeBrun says that the Penguins are in on Chiasson and that the ask is a 2nd round pick or a good prospect should the #Oilers decide to move him.

Weed was the word at Snoop Dogg's Rogers Place hip hop buffet
Snoop Dogg at Rogers Place Wednesday night.
If the Snoop Dogg & Friends Tour stop in Edmonton seems a little hazy in flashback, you’re definitely forgiven.
It’s inconceivable anyone in the downtown arena — O.G.s and popo alike — didn’t have at least a minor contact high by the time Warren G was laying down his smooth beats. And that was only halfway through the ’90s buffet of West Coast hip hop, lingerie-wearing dancers spinning on poles and hila -

A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Thursday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -17.5 C with 3 km/h winds out of the west contributing to a -20 wind chill.
Well so much for yesterday being a nice day. Once the wind started howling and the snow started falling things turned pretty miserable pretty fast. Unfortunately, that’s basically today’s forecast in a nutshell. Snow, wind and blowing windy snow. Fantastic. T -

Thursday's letters: Reduced RAM tickets would boost crowds
Along with 17,000 others, we visited the Royal Alberta Museum on Family Day. It really is quite splendid but doesn’t the number of visitors on a free day suggest that the normal admission price is too high?
Having spent so much on this wonderful museum, shouldn’t the province be trying to encourage people to visit time and again rather than imposing entrance fees that will barely begin to repay construction costs while keeping regular folks away?

Oil Spills: What to expect from the Edmonton Oilers at NHL trade deadline
The Edmonton Oilers have already dealt away goalie Cam Talbot to the Philadelphia Flyers for Anthony Stolarz in order to clear salary cap room to fit defenceman Andrej Sekera in the lineup and under the salary cap now that he’s back from injury.
Now, can the Oilers under interim general manager Keith Gretzky reasonably do much else besides give players away from middling draft picks to try to clear salary off the books?

For the Soldier: Veteran details struggles, support at military fundraiser
In 2008, while serving on what would be his final tour in Afghanistan, retired Maj. Mark Campbell was “blown up” by an improvised explosive device. He lost both his legs and suffered damage to his lungs. On the operating table, he died and was brought back to life. He says that was the easy part.

Daughter feels 'numb' after charges stayed in mother's murder case
The daughter of a 40-year-old woman slain in Edmonton eight years ago said she is lost for words after charges were stayed in the case.
Last week second-degree murder charges against Dana Fash, also known as the “Mill Woods rapist,” were stayed after prosecutors decided to not move forward with the case because there wasn’t a reasonable likelihood of conviction.
Fash had been charged in the 2011 slaying of Jeanette Marie Cardinal.

Keith Gerein: Jason Kenney's prescription for health care relies on false diagnosis
United Conservative candidates went to “campaign school” over the Family Day weekend to learn the ABCs of running an election race.
Party leader Jason Kenney has been offering Albertans some lessons of his own, on everything from economics and math to education and civics, outlining how he plans to wipe the blackboard clean of nearly everything the NDP has written over the past four years.
Kenney’s policy announcements are just getting started, but the list is already long enou -
First Palestine pavilion to debut at 2019 Heritage Festival
Palestine will host a pavilion for the first time at the Edmonton Heritage Festival in 2019.
“We weren’t going to take no for an answer this time around,” Canada Palestine Cultural Association vice-president Mousa Qasqas said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Taylor Hall back in Edmonton? NHL insider muses about the possibility
This in from Joshua Marshall and Ryan Petrovic’s 2 Mutts podcast, a fun and informative interview with top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet where Friedman mused about the Edmonton Oilers bringing back Taylor Hall.

Jason Kenney calls for Alberta Health Services review, says UCP will not make cuts to health care
Opposition leader Jason Kenney says a United Conservative government would conduct a performance review of Alberta Health Services within 30 days of taking office “to get more bang for the taxpayers’ buck.”
In releasing more of the UCP’s platform Wednesday morning at the west end Matheson Seniors Residence, Kenney also said the party will keep the planned south Edmonton hospital in the works, but will look at the overall infrastructure costs.
