Memo to Edmonton Oilers: Let's say you approach a home game like you intend to win it
Game 59: Coyotes at Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers headed off on a three-game road trip to the tough Metropolitan Division last week with their head coach, Ken Hitchcock, bravely proclaiming the club’s plan to make the playoffs was to take four points from every three-game segment the rest of the way.
Three games and zero points later, that plan has already come off the rails. In fairness to the Oilers, they busted their tails in all three games, outshooting each opponent by a combined 116-85, -
Experience helps former soldier Tim Isberg reinvent himself in song
After serving in the Canadian Army for decades Tim Isberg is well on his way to a new career plying original and insightful roots music, but in some ways he will never put the soldier role behind him.
“It’s all so interwoven,” Isberg explains. “I don’t think I would ever get (the army) out of me and I don’t think I would want to because it’s part of who I am. I spent 30 years doing something that taught me a lot about myself and other people, and ga -
Edmonton Symphony Orchestra showcases Finnish master's works during Sibelius Festival
Sibelius is not only the greatest of all the Scandinavian composers, but arguably the greatest composer of all the northern lands. He captures the intricacies of light and the ruggedness of northern landscapes. Deep in his soul are the great myths of the north, especially those of the Kalevala, the national epic of his homeland, Finland.
All this makes his music attractive to Canadians — we can recognize this world. It also appeals to those who love Romantic music, for he is perhaps the ve -
Crowdfunded Daze Magazine crisply rises from euthanized Vue Weekly
Daze Magazine founding editors Chelsea Novak and Stephan Boissonneault.
The editors of the recently euthanized arts and culture periodical Vue Weekly did something too few of us do when robbed of something we love: they said uh-uh.
To quote Fred Rogers, there are many ways to say I love you, and former Vue editors Stephan Boissonneault, Chelsea Novak and Doug Johnson are using their obvious passion for Edmonton’s arts and culture as the molten energy pushing their new project forward.

Province scales back crude-by-rail plan, will lease 4,400 cars
The Alberta government will lease 4,400 rail cars to move oil out of the province, resulting in 120,000 barrels per day by mid-2020, Premier Rachel Notley announced Tuesday afternoon as part of the crude-by-rail strategy.
Instead of purchasing trains, the government will buy rail service from Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National Railway to ship crude oil to market with pending destinations including International markets and the U.S. Gulf Coast.

British singer Morrissey is coming to Edmonton April 18.
Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me … and, can it be? — maybe they do, because Morrissey is finally coming to Edmonton, to the Jubilee Auditorium April 18!

Elise Stolte: 'Say carrot' … UCP phone bot conversations feel creepy, sound creepy

But something was slightly off. Hamilton got only the bio of candidate Marjorie Newman in return. He asked what small business she runs and the voice said it couldn&rsq -

Edmonton weather: It's -4 C today with a chance of gorgeousness
A look at today’s Edmonton weather by Environment Canada.
Tuesday morning temperatures at the Edmonton Blatchford station measured -16.0 C with 2 km/h winds out of the south, southwest contributing to a -18 wind chill.
This is more like it. I think it’s safe to say (knock on wood) the recent cold snap is behind us. Sure, there are a couple nights in the long-term forecast where temperatures could dip below -20 C but at this point so long as it doesn’t say “ -
Opinion: Bighorn proposal puts politics over public input
For Alberta off-highway vehicle (OHV) users and an increasing number of user groups, municipalities and First Nations to say the provincial government’s approach to consultation regarding public land-use policies has been troubling would be an understatement.
The Bighorn Country proposal is just another example of the NDP government’s disregard for stakeholder and public input, leading to the increasing strain between backcountry users and the government of Alberta. The Alberta Off- -

'It's like a doctor telling you, you have cancer:' Alberta farmers fight a growing battle
John Guelly is blunt about how tough it was five years ago to be hit with the news that clubroot had found its way into his canola crop.
“It’s like a doctor telling you, ‘You have cancer,'” the Westlock-area farmer recalled. “Your main source of income on most farms in this area is canola and as soon as you find clubroot you’re worried that you’ll never be able to grow canola again.”
Canola producers in the Edmonton region are now years into their -

Magic, maggots and music dance onto Shoctor stage with Matilda The Musical
Generally speaking, being an adult is a pretty good gig. But after meeting the spunky Matilda and her spirited classmates at Crunchem, a school for Revolting Children, a dip in their pool of pranks, class camaraderie, and parental pay back feels a simply delicious retro treat.
The stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s story opens Thursday at the Citadel (I caught one of the previews starring Winnipeg’s Anna Anderson-Epp as Matilda). If you or your children has eve -

Have Mercy creates new recession-proof menu for destination dining in Old Strathcona
I was skeptical about the new menu at Have Mercy, I admit that. Co-owner Michael Maxxis had done some research among customers and discovered that folks were, surprise!, finding the recession a little hard to bear. Money for eating out was tight.
So he tasked chef Nate Henry (whose background includes running the former 12 Acres restaurant in St. Albert and time at the new OEB restaurant on Rice Howard Way) with creating an inventive and delicious menu that emphasized affordability.
