Jason Kenney to speak at UCP pre-election conference Saturday evening
The United Conservative Party is holding a pre-election conference this weekend on the heels of several campaign promises rolled out by Leader Jason Kenney.
A UCP government would repeal the carbon tax, change provincial liquor rules and ban MLAs from crossing the floor, he said. The election is expected between March 1 and May 31.
Kenney is slated to give a keynote address at the Edmonton Expo Centre at 6 p.m.
Earlier this week, Kenney also said he would introduce recall legislation, limit dona -

It is my belief that Gagner initiated the conversation and showed interest in returning to the club that originally drafted him 6th overall in 2007. Firefighters in Edmonton and Strathcona County will be braving the frigid temperatures this week to camp on fire hall rooftops in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
The annual fundraising initiative, part of a longstanding relationship between the national organization and firefighters across the country, got its start in Edmonton in 2006.

Tuesday's letters: NDP's mandate isn't mudslinging
I was shocked and saddened to see Brian Mason’s press release announcing the “Truth about Jason Kenney” partisan website. I was shocked that a sitting government would sink to such a low and saddened that Trumpian-style politics have come to Canada.
In 2015, Premier Rachel Notley frequently claimed that Albertans gave her a mandate. Was this it? To spend four years attacking and insulting conservatives?
I want a government that speaks for me and doesn’t skulk into the mud -
Saturday's letters: Wilson-Raybould outwitting Trudeau
The prime minister is showing his teeth at former minister Jody Wilson-Raybould stating that, in effect, if she would have more effectively communicated her concerns to him, he would have better understood her. Her problem, not his.
The PM appears to have also seriously miscalculated exactly who Wilson-Raybould is in this affair, mistaking her as a pawn to do his bidding regarding SNC-Lavalin. By not doing so, she suffered the consequences, with little room to move.
The pawn, however, appea -
Opinion: Alberta must exit market to get oil moving again
Alberta’s crude oil production curtailment has been working so well of late in terms of generating stronger prices for its benchmark heavy crude oil and lowering crude oil inventories, that Premier Rachel Notley recently announced an easing of the curtailment mandate.
As is often the case when the government tries to level the playing field, things often tilt in the other direction when least expected. The most recent data seem to be telling a different story as the province’s crude -

Cam Talbot traded to Flyers, Koskinen now king in Edmonton
From the moment that Mikko Koskinen signed his three year, $4.5 million per deal in January the clock was ticking on Cam Talbot’s time in Edmonton.
He’s now been moved, sent out in a salary dump so that the Oilers can recall Andrej Sekera from the Bakersfield Condors early next week.
The trade turns out to be a small one, even as Talbot was one of the heroes of Edmonton’s now distant 2016-17 season. Since that happy time, he’s been plagued by mediocre performances highlig -

Player grades: Oilers get "E" for Effort but no "F" for Finish
Oilers 1, Hurricanes 3
For the second time on a tough three-game roadie in the Metropolitan Division, the Edmonton Oilers peppered an opposing goalie with rubber but had no finish. The inescapable conclusion? Their playoff hopes are essentially finished. With 57 games on the books and just 25 left on the slate, the Oilers stand just 1 point above last place in the West, having won just 1 of their last 10 outings (1-7-2).
No faulting the Oilers’ effort in Carolina on Friday night, but they -

Keith Gerein: Clumsy NDP effort to vilify Jason Kenney carries high risk of backfire
Are you scared yet?
The Alberta election is just weeks away and Jason Kenney is lurking.
He’s inside the house, coming for your health care, your reproductive rights, your children’s future and anything else he can get his conservative claws on.
You’ll be lucky to escape with a few energy efficient light bulbs.
That, at least, is the bogeyman image the NDP is trying to create around Kenney with the launch of a new website cataloguing all of his alleged misdeeds.
