A child caregiver who provided services out of his home in northern Alberta is facing multiple child pornography charges, says the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT).
The 52-year-old — arrested Feb. 8 with the help of McLennan RCMP — offered children’s relief care in his home in Donnelly, about 427 km northwest of Edmonton, said ALERT in a Friday release.
ALERT’s Integrated Child Exploitation unit (ICE) has no belief at this time to suspect any children in the

We Are Not Alone explores existence of extra-terrestrials
Even as our intellectual achievements soar ever higher — what they can’t do with a laser beam these days isn’t worth mentioning — we remain, at our core, simple creatures. We want love, a warm bed, a good lint brush and … answers. Always with the answers.
In Damien Atkins’ thoroughly entertaining one-man show presented by Theatre Network, We Are Not Alone, the St. Albert-raised actor and playwright ponders what was once imponderable — the notion that th -

Woman acquitted of killing friend after judge rules stabbing was accidental
A woman covered her face and sobbed in court Friday after a judge found her not guilty of killing a friend during a drunken altercation at her home in 2017.
Megan Elizabeth Loos was overcome with emotion as Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Peter Michalyshyn read his decision, acquitting her of manslaughter in the death of 21-year-old Sara Kay.
Afterward, Loos hugged friends and family as she made her way out of the courtroom.
Loos’ trial began two weeks ago, nearly two years after Kay& -
Eggen vows to ban seclusion rooms in schools as Inclusion Alberta slams province's draft guidelines
Alberta Education Minister David Eggen is vowing to ban seclusion rooms in schools, he said in a Friday statement.
“As a parent and a teacher myself, I’ve frankly been disturbed by some of the things parents are sharing about their family’s experiences with seclusion rooms. We can and must do better for our kids,” Eggen said in an Friday morning emailed statement.

Edmonton Oilers' incompetence shines through as team considers trade or an AHL stint for Jesse Puljujarvi
This in from TSN’s Ryan Rishuag: “Oilers had discussion with Markus Lehto, agent for Jesse Puljujarvi today. Team is open to trading him if a proper return can be found, and in the meantime an AHL stint to help boost offence and confidence is being considered. No decisions yet.”
My takeThis tweet pains me. It seems to be Puljujarvi’s time in Edmonton is coming to an end. As both an Oilers fan and a Puljujarvi fan, it’s demoralizing to think of how badly things have -
Staying the course: Small and steady, Concept Homes celebrates 50th anniversary
It might be hard to conceptualize nowadays but homes were selling for about $6,500 when Helmut Hinteregger was putting the building blocks in place for a new career.
The Red Seal carpenter, who worked for residential and commercial contractors during his apprenticeship, wasn’t looking for a game-changing concept. Rather, it was about finding a way to provide for his family.
When Hinteregger was 26 years old — he is now 75 — he started Concept Homes, which will be celebrating it -
Faulkner Real Estate Report: How home buyers' tastes have changed over 10 years
In the last 10 years, home buyers’ tastes have evolved and what they look for today has changed.
Open-concept living was trending up 10 years ago, and it’s even more important to buyers now. Buyers prefer a great room where the kitchen, dining and living room are one big open space. It’s a preferred design for entertaining guests and improves the flow of the home, making it easier to move around without any dividing walls or doorways.
And the kitchen has only increased i -
Growing Things: Salvage cracked tree trunks by bolting them together
Q: I have a 20-year-old maple tree that is 30 feet tall. There are two main trunks that come together, forming a V. My problem is that the tree has developed a large crack in the middle of the V crotch of these two trunks. I am currently using a rope to keep the two halves together. I am wondering if I can put a bolt through the two trunks to save the tree?

Inclusion Alberta slams province's draft guidelines on seclusion rooms
Alberta Education has failed to protect children with disabilities from seclusion and restraints in schools, charges an advocacy group.
Education Minister David Eggen last year appointed a working group, inclusive of parents whose children with disabilities had been subject to or at risk of physical restraint and seclusion in time-out rooms, to provide recommendations.
On Dec. 19, 2018, Inclusion Alberta, Autism Society of Alberta and others were invited to meet the minister’s working grou -

Contemporary dancers take off from themes of acceptance, Elvis, and the cosmos
If you think contemporary dance is a little too ethereal for your tastes, you might be surprised to know that Star Wars, Elvis Presley and video games helped inspire one of Canada’s most celebrated choreographers, China-born Wen Wei Wang.

Friday's letters: Frequent shops near construction zones
Re. “A ‘can of worms’ worth considering,” Elise Stolte, Feb. 13
Elise Stolte’s column in regard to the potential closure of 95 Avenue for LRT construction was interesting.

Editorial: Right to choose not up for debate
Abortion is a matter between a woman and her physician. It has no business being reduced to a political football and access to it shouldn’t be up for debate.
But once again, Albertans find themselves on the cusp of an election where forces seem to want to make it an issue for the campaign trail.
Jason Kenney says the United Conservative Party won’t debate abortion access if elected to government despite his own personal beliefs. Good on him. It’s a question that the country&rsq -

Elise Stolte: No hashtag will solve racism but new Somali mothers' coalition might help
Racist letters left on doorsteps, hateful slurs — with these cropping up month after month it feels like Alberta is heading backward down a road of pain and I’ve heard no good solution from government.

What actually works in the effort to counter racism? Her answer surprised me. She brushed off Twitter campaigns as publicity stunts. No buzzwords -
David Staples: Major opportunity but no shortage of risk in Alberta's bet on petrochemical
There’s no shortage of opportunity in Alberta’s major new multibillion-dollar play in petrochemicals, but also some familiar-sounding and ominous risks.
Rachel Notley’s government has pushed hard on the petrochemical front, granting tax credits to two different major projects to be built northeast of Edmonton: $200 million in royalty credits to Inter Pipeline’s $3.5-billion project and $300 million in credits to a $4.5-billion Canada Kuwait Petrochemical Corp. project.
