Edmonton Oilers needs to shed salary right now, but not useful players
The Edmonton Oilers are now out of the playoff race and should be in full “sell, sell sell” mode.
High on the list of Oilers trade bait we hear from various sources of varying degrees of credibility names like Cam Talbot, Alex Chiasson, Zack Kassian, Kyle Brodziak, Alex Petrovic, Milan Lucic, Kris Russell, Brandon Manning, Tobias Rieder and Matt Benning.
I’m more than good with Talbot, Lucic, Rieder, Petrovic, Brodziak, Manning and Chiasson being moved as soon as possible, but -

Thursday's letters: Coliseum going to waste
I congratulate the Katz organization in developing the Ice District which has a great economic impact on downtown growth and the future of Edmonton, but I still believe this development could have been done without closing a very viable Coliseum.
The Coliseum has been closed for over a year and taxpayers have paid $1.5 million to maintain the building. This money could have been spent keeping non-conflicting events in the building.
Community-minded events could include minor hockey we -
Opinion: Building a pipeline is for Canada's collective good
As governments in Canada dither and bicker about building an oil pipeline, ordinary Canadians are suffering, their voice unheard or, worse, ignored.
What makes business sense, and the very real need for energy and moving it to where it’s needed, must be considered. So too, what’s good for the environment, and what has the best social outcomes, are crucial to the discussion.
Unfortunately, these two positions have become polarized. In the space between the two positions are the people -

Women’s shelters across Alberta are calling for police to name victims of domestic homicide in order to prevent domestic violence and educate the public.

Serenity case: Mother of four-year-old who died in care denied victim of crime funds

Keith Gerein: UCP election platform beginning to take shape, but some ideas still a thin sauce
As if in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney offered some love to Albertans this week with a proposal to relax provincial liquor laws so as to allow opportunities for public drinking.
For a province trapped in a deep freeze, it was a better gift than any box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers — the ability to imagine a warm summer day, beer or cocktail in hand (and possibly a joint in the other), free to wander the grounds of Edmonton’s fring -

Player grades: Good effort, bad result as Oilers drop goaltending duel in Pittsburgh
Oilers 1, Penguins 3
It was billed as a showdown between Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid, and on that front it didn’t disappoint. But at the end of the night it was Pittsburgh goaltender Matt Murray who stole top billing, turning aside 38 Edmonton Oilers drives including a McDavid penalty shot to backstop the Penguins to a 3-1 win.
This was really a 2-1 game, in fact the scoreboard stayed stuck on that score for 33 minutes after the Penguins forged ahead 6 minutes into the second period. -
